Death was only the beginning.I had a lot to learn the day I woke up in the afterlife. Never mind that my memories had been erased, but being assigned as a demon hunter, um . . . yeah, I don’t think so. Despite my hazy recollections, it was painfully clear physical activity and I weren’t on speaking terms.Making my supernatural headache worse was my infuriating trainer, Logan. Sparks flew between … trainer, Logan. Sparks flew between us immediately—the kind created by our swords and personalities as we clashed in and out of the training center.
Just when I thought my life—or rather, afterlife—was all punch, stab, rinse and repeat, I found myself the wielder of the most powerful sword in existence. Sure, it might be cool to ash demons with a single swipe of my weapon, but now Satan is gunning for me. Logan is the only one I can turn to for help, but the guy has secrets. Until I figure out what they are, I might just be on my own.
Now I have a growing list of things I wish I’d known about the afterlife:
1. You’d better love your job, because there are no take-backs.
2. Demons’ favorite tasty snacks just happen to be dead folk.
3. And above all, you need to be careful who you lip-lock with . . . no comment on why I know that one is important.
My name is Audrey Lyons, and my afterlife is shaping up to be a hot mess and a half.
Fans of The Mortal Instruments, Supernatural, and Buffy, won’t want to miss this epic story of unfailing love and adventure.

An absolute marvel
In YA fantasy. Full of spirituality, faith, love, learning… So many stages of life and learning in one novel. Audrey is an amazing character in all her flaws and every other character in all their flaws, traits, knowledge being this novel together. Sadness and joy in one package. So many things to read in this and how well written it really is.
I loved this unique take on demon hunters. I love following Aubrey through her “life after”, and, of course, Logan is just drool worthy!
This was a great start to an intense spiritual journey and war! Audrey wakes up dead, in the afterlife, with no memories of her past life and is immediately assigned to hunt demons. She believes God’s made a huge mistake, but everyone keeps telling her that he never does. When an ancient weapon with unique powers chooses her to be its wielder, all eyes are on her, including Satan’s. Watching Audrey struggle with God’s purpose for her was an emotional journey. I loved watching her and Logan’s relationship develop throughout this book; they had many infuriating and comical moments and I can’t wait to see where it goes. I liked that even though the setting is Heaven, I like to think of it more so as the in between, everyone is still flawed and no one is perfect. For a Christian fiction book, I didn’t feel like religion was being shoved down my throat and Julie managed to put her own spin on spirituality. This book was filled with action, darkness, hope, and self discovery and doubt.

Reread December 2018: Such an amazing story! Still just as powerful and thought-provoking as the first time reading it.
So I thought I knew what I was getting into when reading HUNTRESS, but I was quite wrong in my expectations. The author literally created a world like I have never read. I’m not quite sure how to put it into words because it was so utterly creative. I immensely enjoyed learning about the place Audrey lived in with the same awe and wonder as her.
Logan was something else. I was able to interview him recently on my blog (HOPE through the Pages) and was SO intrigued about him afterwards, that I desperately wanted to read more.
I was not disappointed! Him and Audrey have a very lively relationship that more than once caused me to laugh or giggle, but that ending broke a chunk of my heart. So thankful to know book two is releasing soon.
My favorite chapter was “God.” In no way does the author put the idea of God in a box. She brought Him to “life” in a beautiful way and was so strongly touched by this chapter that I am unsure if I fully comprehended everything. One of the best parts of this book for sure!
The only reason I am giving this book four stars is because I was unsure for much of the beginning if the concept of this story was Biblical or not. However, once I let that go and just enjoyed the story WITH powerful Biblical truths woven throughout, I immensely did (very happily if I might add).
Overall, this was a very good read that had me entranced as I attempted to read it in a day. The wonder of Audrey’s surroundings soaked into me and the reminder of God’s powerful love for His children, despite what our circumstances “seem” to tell us otherwise, did as well.
This book is a very different and unique take on the Afterlife. A bit fantasy, a bit speculative fiction and a lot of inspiration are thrown together to make an entertaining book.
The main character, Audrey, dies at the very beginning of the book and finds herself in the afterlife. However, she has no memory of her life on Earth or how she got to the place she finds herself in now. She is quickly assigned to be a Hunter, although she has no skills whatsoever in that area.
Many things happen to Audrey in her new “life” and every time she asks questions, she is told to be patient. Time after time, she is told that her memory of her life before will come back to her and that things happening around her will become clear.
At first, I had a hard time getting into the story since Audrey seemed to be a whiny, petulant teen without an ounce of patience with the world around her. However, as the book progresses, I learned to love her and felt like I was making discoveries right along with her.
There is some wicked action between Angels and Demons, some great fight scenes between Audrey and Demons, the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel, and even the biggest Demon of them all, Satan himself.
The author does a great job with building a possible Afterlife, with beauty and wonders abounding everywhere you look. I loved the encounter between Audrey and God (although it took a long, long time coming!) and definitely will read this part again. I say that this book is speculative since nobody really knows what the Afterlife/Heaven will be like and I have always imagined that it will be whatever each person wants it to be.
The narrator added a lot to my enjoyment of this book and definitely kept my interest. I would recommend this book to readers/listeners of all ages, especially those who love fantasy with a Biblical twist. This combination is a rare occurrence and I look forward to continuing Audrey’s adventures in the rest of the series.
I was given the opportunity to listen to this book by the author and chose to review it.
Blown away!
I don’t know what I was thinking when I opened up this book to read but it certainly wasn’t what I found there. I just casually started reading and immediately found myself engrossed. I honestly could not stop flipping the pages until the end. Even then I knew I wanted more. Julie Hall has found herself a new fan in me. I was enraptured with the world building! How does one imagine what life is like on the other side of life? I was pleasantly surprised that Julie Hall’s explanation coincided very closely to the scripture version only she made it feel more real. Also, I felt an immediate bond with her characters. They became my friends. The protagonist, Audrey, found herself In her life after death as a trainee huntress of demons and had completely forgotten her previous earth life. She had no clue why she was chosen to fill this new assignment. Also, her trainer and mentor, Logan did not go easy on her. She kept making mistakes tripping over herself, embarrassing herself. I could totally relate. Part of her embarrassment was due to her crush on Logan. The romantic angst between them was palpable. I am anxious to read the next book in this series to find out how Audrey progresses. I would highly recommend reading this book for all ages.
Oh wow, it was a complete pleasure to get to read Huntress, the first book in the Life After series by Julie Hall. In it, we get to puzzle and explore the afterlife right along with Audrey. Having woken up without a trace of memory from her previous life, and not knowing where she’s at or what she’s supposed to do, we get to experience the whole newness of it (the afterworld), as well as all it quirks and tricks by following Audrey’s journey in it… and folks, what a journey it’ll be! Brace yourselves to experience the afterworld as never before (and as you never thought it’d be! for real, the world-creating/describing in this book will just blow your mind, and wish you could be there!).
Of course, right along with the awesomeness of it, you’ll get to experience (well, Audrey, but you get it ) all the bruise-acquiring moments (just part of the fun, you know? #jk). Because… oh, am I getting ahead of myself? Sorry. Audrey’s assigned to be a Huntress (SO cool, right?). The problem? She doesn’t know the first thing about it, and thus, needs lots and lots of training. Luckily for her (and us), she’ll get Logan as her trainer, and that’s where things will start to get really interesting
All in all, this book has lots of things going on for it that make it a one-of-a-kind kind of book (in the best possible way), and so worth giving it a try! So, just, go and get yourself a copy! You won’t regret it!
No kidding, it’s just awesome! Julie Hall, I sincerely can’t wait for the next one!
