The fourteenth novel featuring Leaphorn and Chee by New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman, now reissued in the Premium Plus format.Three men raid the gambling casino run by the Ute nation and then disappear into the maze of canyons on the Utah-Arizona border. When the FBI, with its helicopters and high-tech equipment, focuses on a wounded deputy sheriff as a possible suspect, Navajo … suspect, Navajo Tribal Police Sergeant Jim Chee and his longtime colleague, retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, launch an investigation of their own. Chee sees a dangerous flaw in the federal theory; Leaphorn sees intriguing connections to the exploits of a legendary Ute bandit-hero. And together, they find themselves caught up in the most perplexing—and deadly—criminal manhunt of their lives.

Tony Hillerman writes great detective stories. They all take place in the American Southwest. His stories always try to capture the feel of the rural lands and reservations and the culture and traditions of the tribes, especially the Dine/Navajo. His main characters, Leaphorn and Chee, follow the troupe of the older, inspired master detective (Leaphorn) and the younger, less inspired but still competent, protege (Chee). Both characters are interesting and satisfyingly different. This story finds Leaphorn recently retired but still getting involved in the action. Chee is struggling a bit with personal stuff. The detective part of the story follows a familiar cadence of both men working the case from different angles with the Legendary Lieutenant pulling it all together and solving the puzzle. This time, I thought the answer was a little telegraphed but that did not bother me. I enjoyed the story anyway. The ending contained a mildly surprising loose end – at least it seemed that way to me. Not a big deal. Definitely recommended.
I have read every book this author has written, and I have loved them all.
It’s a Tony Hillerman book what else needs to be said
I adore Tony Hillermam books with Leaphorn and Chee. I wish I could meet all the characters. I feel he is very respectful of Native people and tribal beliefs.

Quality Tony Hillerman.
I love this author’s books. I have read almost all of them.
Badgers? We don’t need no steenkin’ badgers. OK, I had to get that out of my system. This isn’t Hillerman’s best, but it’s an interesting story, but the wise Indian vs stupid FBI agents trope is a bit overdone here.
Tony Hillerman books are always great. They arenot only entertaining but also teach a lot about modern native American culture.
Love all his novels
Classic Hillerman – entertaining and well written with great characters.
I love this author’s writing about the reservations and culture of the Southwest.
As always, Tony Hillerman books entertain me, inform and expand my knowledge, and give me a “mental health” break as I live for that reading-time in the hot, arid, open lands of the American southwest. I can’t get enough of Tony Hillerman books. Even though he is gone….his books and ability to teach and entertain live on forever
