The fourteenth novel featuring Leaphorn and Chee by New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman, now reissued in the Premium Plus format.Three men raid the gambling casino run by the Ute nation and then disappear into the maze of canyons on the Utah-Arizona border. When the FBI, with its helicopters and high-tech equipment, focuses on a wounded deputy sheriff as a possible suspect, Navajo … suspect, Navajo Tribal Police Sergeant Jim Chee and his longtime colleague, retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, launch an investigation of their own. Chee sees a dangerous flaw in the federal theory; Leaphorn sees intriguing connections to the exploits of a legendary Ute bandit-hero. And together, they find themselves caught up in the most perplexing—and deadly—criminal manhunt of their lives.

I like Tony Hillerman’s stories of the Navajo police set in NW NM, NE AZ, some S UT and CO. He has believable and likeable characters, a good story, and factual location descriptions. Enjoyable reads.
I love all Hillerman books and this one is no exception. I am glad his daughter is carrying on the writing tradition.
I like all of his books.
Tony always writes a great story and along the way you learn about the Indian culture. I love his books!
Tony Hillerman is truly a great storyteller. Along with the excellent mysteries he provides a learning experience about the Navajo and Hopi tribes of the western U.S. There aren’t many authors I can say I love but Hillerman is one of the few.
Hillerman continues his engaging writing about retired Navajo policeman Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee working to solve a robbery at the Ute casino. There are twists and turns to solving this crime.
Been reading Hillerman for many years, skipped a time, and I was glad to revisit this wonderful author.
This “mystery” book, although fairly well written, failed at the end, not arriving at any resolution to the mystery. This guy is no Tolstoy; he’s not good enough to do that.
I just love all of Tony Hillerman novels- top rate writing, interesting and likeable characters.
I LOVE everything Tony ever wrote!
I love all the Chee and Leaphorn books.
It helps if you live on the Northwest Plateau dessert country to appreciate this book. I live here so I was able to visualize many of the places described in this story. The three main characters – Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito are very likeable.
Always learn about Navajo culture and values reading Tony Hillerman.
Great story
Like all Hillerman’s books it was a very good read. Always a good story and information about the South West
.
Typical Hillerman: interesting, complicated enough to keep up the interest, and deliciously insightfull of native American societies and their often over looked complexity and interactions. Simply a good read.
As always, Tony Hillerman’s stories are fascinating glimpses of the lives of Native Americans. They illustrate the connection between the natural world and well being of people.
