An American psychologist accepts an invitation to her estranged husband’s isolated English estate in this suspenseful tale by an Edgar Award–winning author. When Eve North returns to Athmore after three years’ estrangement from her husband, Justin, she finds the great and sprawling English estate—and Justin himself—considerably changed. But Eve has changed as well. She knows the mistakes she … the mistakes she made in her marriage, is prepared to admit culpability in their separation, and now dares to win back his love. But for all Eve knows, for all she remembers, and for all she’s ready to face, she still enters Athmore dangerously unaware of what awaits her.
Athmore has its secrets—and those who protect them, including Justin; his brother, Marc, who once preyed on Eve’s emotions; and Justin’s new fiancée, a cool manipulator who now has everything she wants. Eve’s only ally appears to be the old family gardener who has carved from the green-black yew a topiary garden in the form of a magnificent chessboard as both a masterpiece and a warning.

An awesome author. I’ve always loved her books!!
Good book
Always love her stories, especially when I’m looking for a Happily Ever After – she never disappoints.
I read this book years ago and was happy to find the e-version. Cant wait to read it again. Gothic romance was always my genre of choice back in the day.
I first read this in high school and remembered it as a book I really loved, so when it was available for a low price as an ebook, I bought it and reread it. I still loved it. Of course as a gothic novel it had romance and mystery and menace. You aren’t sure who the real bad guy is so it keeps you guessing and worrying. The ending is romantic and satisfying and it stood up when reread as an adult.
I’ve always enjoyed Phyllis Whitney books. Enjoyed the story. Am always liking tales that take their place in the British Isles. My heritage is there & wish I was younger so I could experience more of it. Glad the story ended up nice. The description of the large home of wealthy people was easy to associate with what was happening there.
I love Phyllis A. Whitney’s books. I have not read any lately.
From the queen of early romantic suspense, this book is a throw-back to our past.
I love Phyllis Whitney books and this one didn’t disappoint.
I’m a fan of Daphne du Murier
and Victoria Holt gothic/suspenseful stories and I’ve (how did I miss her?) recently discovered Phyllis Whitney. Obviously the genre is specific and some books are dated, but the story-telling is classic, mysterious and romantic. These are good tales, well-written and hold their own without sex and profanity. So much fun to read!
Just an enjoyable and interesting book to read. I like all of this author’s books. Holds your interest till the end.
I am always annoyed when what characters do or say does not match what we’ve been told about them or the situations providing motivation. That was the case with this book. Otherwise it was an enjoyable, easy read. I wish I liked the characters better.
Slow moving.
Always enjoy Phyliss Whitney.
Keeps you reading. Great characters
If you like old Gothic works, this is for you.
I used to sneak these books out of the library when I was a little girl, they seemed so sexy and romantic back then with a mystery thrown in and I find them just as wonderful decades later, a little tamer now perhaps than they were for a 10 year old, but a still a darn good story. Want a nice romantic rainy afternoon mystery? This is a good choice!
In addition to enjoying the well developed characters and the interesting plots, I always learn from reading Ms Whitney’s books. They are always so well researched that I can count on the accuracy of the details of the setting and dialect. This book is no exception. A wonderful, engaging read!
I loved this book. It is well written and the story plot is intriguing.
Was always a fan of this author. Plot lines are always interesting. Complex plots. Romantic mysteries.
