“Five blazing STARS!”— Tracy M Joyce, author of The Chronicles of Altaica Her entrance exam just became a fight for survival. Subria is going to be one of the few, a Rider dedicated to scouting the food and resources her people need to survive, but first she has to pass the entrance exam. Of course, it’s more than just an exam, it’s a chance to attain the one thing that a Rider needs above all … exam, it’s a chance to attain the one thing that a Rider needs above all others; a steed.
The bond between these genetically engineered companions and their riders is legendary, and Subria wants it almost as much as she wants to follow in her father’s footsteps as a Rider. Legends might be all she ever gets to know it as though, because as soon as the test starts, something goes terribly, terribly wrong.
Now, Subria’s no longer fighting for a dream, she’s in a battle for survival.
Hunter is the first action packed instalment in The Hero Rebellion, a YA sci-fi series perfect for fans of The Hunger Games, featuring genetically engineered companions, illegal street races and a butt-kicking heroine who won’t take no for an answer.

“Hunter” by Belinda Crawford is a satisfying prequel to her “The Hero Rebellion” series, that makes a very good job of familiarizing the reader with the world and characters of the main series in barely over fifty pages.
Jørn is a toxic world, in which the population is forced to live in floating cities, relying on Riders for security, exploration and contact with each other. Subria is a student about to pass her exam at the Morague Academy and become a rider, if she manages to reach the testing ground. The testing procedure is hard and demand lots of the future riders, after all the future of Jørn depends on the abilities of its riders.
Belinda Crawford writing-style is fast-paced, fluid and easy to follow. Her world-crafting is excellent, unique, unexpected and coherent. An interesting plot and likable, credible characters make this series a clear recommendation for all those looking for a new futuristic world to explore.
This is not the type of book I normally read, however I am glad I did. It was very interesting and entertaining. It had great characters. The only downside is it is very slow to start and I had trouble pronouncing some of the words. Overall a great read if your looking for something different.
Don’t let the short length fool you. This is a rich, full story that does an excellent job of introducing readers to a strong character, the strange world she lives in with its terrifying hidden secrets, and the powerful animals her people work with. This is a prequel for a trilogy that comes before the Hero Rebellion series, but it tells a full story – no cliffhanger or teasers. Just a richly imagined world full if intriguing characters and beasts you will want to spend more time about and learn more about.
This is a quick read that is as the author says a prequel to a prequel. Along with some intense action, it serves it purpose to set the hook for a series that will be coming in the future.
This latest novella from author Belinda Crawford is perhaps the best of her novellas in terms of introducing readers to the world of Jørn. (The other novellas are excellent, but to get the most out of them you need to be familiar with the world and main story.)
The story gives a great little preface into series setting, then launches into the tale of Subria, a student at Morague Academy who is about to undergo elimination testing in order to become a rider. Riders are those who explore and patrol the hostile surface of Jørn on genetically engineered steeds.
Don’t think horses here! Crawford’s excels at inventing unique hybrid species, which are crosses between the native Jørn species and earth creatures. There are some really special companion animals in this series that you’ll love.
Anyway, back to Hunter. The novel starts out with a bang – Subria is late for a departing shuttle and about to miss her testing. Once this is overcome, she and the other students are taken to “The Farm” where the hybrid animals are bred. There is a lot potential danger here and not just from the animals. What unfolds is one hell of a testing day for the students.
Throughout, the pacing is excellent. There are no dull bits and plenty of larger backstory is introduced or hinted at. Hinted because Crawford says this novella has now spawned a new series in this world. So there’s more to come in Subria’s story.
I highly recommend this series if you’re after some fun sci-fi and this novella would be a great way to sample the author’s writing.
If you like it, move then move on to the main Hero Series and the other novellas.
