Three days ago, Ember Squires had things in order. She was a well-known detective in Seattle. She had a son she adored and an ex-husband she was learning to navigate. Her life was ordered and purpose-driven.But that life was shattered, stripped away in an instant, as she sat huddled along the side of the road in a relentless snowstorm. Her car beyond repair, her phone ruined, her son’s head in her … phone ruined, her son’s head in her lap, she was forced to accept the only offer of help that came her way and the ironclad stipulations that came with it.
Seventy-two hours later, Ember finds herself an employee of Hell.
Forced to call on the skills she gained working for years in the Pacific Northwest, she now scours the world, seeing it in an entirely new manner. Invisible to all she might have known, unable to contact anyone from her past life, she must push forward, handling whatever is thrown her way, all in honor of a contract she signed that fateful night.
No matter how ill-prepared she might be or how much she despises what is thrown her way, because to recant would be unthinkable.

I went into reading this book with an open mind as I wasn’t sure if I would like it or not as I have not read this author’s books. The book is far better than I expected and I found that I was engrossed from the start and loved the way the writer portrayed good and evil. I was surprised by many things in the book and it kept me guessing what would happen next. If you want a book that is full of surprises and that will keep you turning the pages you will love this book!
this was such a captivating read from the start, the characters had me hooked and I couldn’t wait to read more. I felt it flowed well and had plenty of twists and turns. the main character was well rounded and strong in their presence. I look forward to the next installment 🙂
Ember was a police detective. That is until a snowstorm and a car accident took that from her. Now she is a “Hunter” for the devil. That’s right Hell’s main man himself! How she got into this predicament is laid out in the book. Kaia is Ember’s handler. She is supposed to help guide her through her mission. Let’s just say things don’t go as planned. Kaia and Ember are not BFFs by any stretch of the imagination. This story is written with humor and sarcastic implications which I love!
This is not your typical Good vs Evil story….oh no no!!! You really need to read this book. FYI the ending blew me away!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. Can not wait for the next one!
The Hunter was an extremely intriguing, supernatural thriller of epic proportions…
I kid you not, this book was totally unexpected and a bloody awesome read, it had me glued to the pages from start to finish wondering how it was going to turn out, how was it all going to come together and boy it was worth the wait to the very end this action thriller is a must read to anyone who enjoys a great suspenseful thriller with a unique supernatural twist, a fantastic storyline, gripping plot and characters to die for…
Ember has made a deal with the devil and boy what a ride! This was my first read by T.R. Kohler and I enjoyed this fun read very much. This was definitely a surprisingly different twist on the typical suspense/crime drama type story. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Ember and Kaia with Ember being the “newbie” to the spiritual underworld and Kaia being her mentor/trainer. Ember finds that the rules have changed after death and her learning curve is steep. And Kaia must keep her in line while Ember adjusts to her new circumstances and gets the job done! Looking forward to reading more TR Kohler now and would enjoy seeing Ember’s story play out in a series.
Bring on the paranormal!
Good thrillers with paranormal background are rare and this one didn’t disappoint. If you like Dustin Stevens’ writing you will want to read this too. What makes a book enjoyable is not only the story but especially the writing style. I choose books based on who wrote them and not the blurb about the content.
There is also the afterthought of is evil as demonic and is good as angelic as one expects?
Although books are always better than movies I think this one would do great as a screenplay as well.
Can’t wait for the next one in the series!
Ember is in a car accident and her son is dead. She makes a deal with the devil, so now she works for Hell. She uses her skills as a detective in her new enterprise. This novel grabs your interest from the beginning and keeps you wanting to find out what happens next.
Dead is dead, right?
That’s not quite what Ember Squires discovers. In fact, she has never felt more alive. The previous Ember is gone; she is now a Hunter, a Hunter for Hell.
Waking up to a reality where her old life as a detective is but a memory, Ember is tasked with decoding the mysteries of her new life working for Hell. She is saddled with an exasperating partner sent from below to accompany her on a vague mission to recover a missing person on Earth, known as the middle realm to the denizens of both Heaven and Hell.
With Ember needing to learn Hell’s rules of behavior on the fly, and having Heaven’s opponents to spar with during her task, Ember charges into her resurrected life with guarded enthusiasm and bravado.
Kohler has written an intriguing tale that had my imagination thinking about the afterlife and deals humans attempt to make when faced with difficult situations in their own life.
Words can not express how much I loved this book. The main characters are some awesome women and their interaction is great. Could not put this book down, hope there is a sequel, but is a stand alone like advertised. I highly recommend the Hunter!
T. R. Kohler is a new to me author and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed The Hunter. It has a nice twist to the supernatural world of Angels vs. Demons. I feel like it has a lot of potential for a series. Looking forward to more from this author.
This book has an auspicious start: Ember Squires has died in a car crash. At the moment, that’s all we know.
Then, shortly thereafter, a character thinks to herself, over the course of the last 106 years this is the first time this had happened. Now I’m thinking, what is this book all about?
Next, Ember leaves her apartment and finds, Kaia, a young woman outside who tells Ember that she is her handler and a direct employee on earth, and will accompany here everywhere she goes. And Ember replies, “We’re still on Earth?”
Then Kaia says, “Welcome to Hell on Earth”… Technically, it’s known as “middle realm.” As it turns out, they both now work for the Devil and Kaia is a demon, a higher entity than Ember, the newbie.
Then Kaia explains the rules. Now it’s getting more interesting. We know that Ember is a hunter, but we don’t know yet who or what Ember is hunting.
Now you might think this is all about the Devil’s work. But, thoughtfully, though, it should have been obvious that there are angels at work here too. And there are. And it gets real interesting when there is a battle between a couple of angels and our two anti-heroes, Ember and Kaia.
It’s certainly different than any other book I’ve read. It’s a treat and you should read it.
Wow, talk about making a deal with the devil. I’m not sure what you call this genre; 2 demons ( Agents for the devil) fight with 2 not-so-nice angels ( Agents for God) over a captured demon and a valued artifact. One of the demons is newly recruited and this is her first assignment. The learning curve is steep and there are lots of rules. This was an entertaining read. I can imagine this made into a dark comedy movie.
Ember Squires wakes up in a bad space and faces Kaia, her new partner – whose job is too make it worse.
So launches a captivating read. Like start early in the day captivating, because the pace is fast and you need to know what happens next. The Hunter goes beyond the detective procedural into a kaleidoscope of genres that may set a new baseline for imaginative fiction.
Ember has sold her soul to the Devil and now must do his bidding – in the battle of good Vs evil. But which is which? It is not always clear – and often doesn’t matter.
Following Ember on her hellish quest the reader enters a preternatural domain within a mythological framework – with magic, strict rules of engagement and many classical allusions. There is also a crime to solve. Ember was, in life, a dedicated detective making life hell for the bad guys.
The Devil had need for a good investigator so rookie soul Ember now rounds out the team. Kaia needs to break Ember into the ways of the underworld and help her on the case. Kaia does both with delightful passive/aggressive antics. And all this mayhem without any superpowers. Well there is accelerated healing because no one can die – well, since they are already dead… It get gets complicated.
The Devil’s team is hot on the trail of a needful thing and, of course, Angels have their own team trying to derail their efforts and get it for themselves. In setting up the caper the Devil’s intentions seemed good and the Angels – not so much. It seems the earth is an eternal battleground for competing overlords. Very evenly matched overlords it turns out. Interesting ‘good’ and ‘bad’ dynamics play out with a whirlwind of twists and turns.
Ember, freed from earth-bound rules, dives into the case. Lies, deceit, and double dealing – particularly on the part of the Angels keep everyone off balance. Who do you trust? What is a victory? Can there be a reward?
Ember, pick up line two – it’s the Devil for you.
