I swear this series is like watching a cross episode of criminal minds and supernatural, it’s amazing. The author does such a great job of making the reader feel all the emotions of the characters and getting into their heads to really experience the book. I absolutely love the whole series
If you love book one you will definitely love Lathan and Evanee. This book had me hooked from beginning to end. And of course the couple from book one makes an appearance and I loved it. I highly recommend this author to everyone!
Abbie has written another excellent book. She is able to take very dark, emotional, hard situations and drag her characters through Hell and bring about their healing and security. This story had me on the edge of my seat and I devoured it in less then a day. Excellent read!
So fantastic, Abbie Roads has nailed the dark, disturbing, and sexy. What’s nice is that you don’t have to read the first book of the series, Race the Darkness, in order to read this one; it helps but it’s not required. This book was everything I hoped for and more when I thought about Lathan story. Evanee I really love her, she did what she had to do to survive and even when at her lowest it didn’t stop her.
Lathan is unbelievable with his overactive olfactory being able to see memories and feelings from a person’s smell. He works with the FBI as a special consultant he helps track down killers and he’s one the path of one who is constantly changing his MO but the nose knows and Lathan knows all these victims were killed by the same person. Lathan because of his talent doesn’t get close to people for the exception of one, his childhood friend and FBI contact. Evanee is working at a truck stop diner surviving on tips trying to avoid the pervert who has been harassing her. Evanee’s car stops working she pulls off into a rest stop and who should show up but her step brother the pervert. Lathan happen to be riding by and he smelled Evanee’s fear he pulls over to help. Everything about about Evanee calls to Lathan, he instinctually trusts her and knows he must protect her at all costs. Evanee is in shock by the time the stranger rescues her she allows him to take her to his home until she feels better. Evanee, like Lathan, trusts him she knows that she should know better but it’s an instinctual need to be with him. Lathan can drop his guard around her and not get bombarded with scent memories. Evanee, on the other hand, her dreams start getting worse, she’s connecting with the murdered victims in Lathan’s case and leads to evidence. The serial killer figures out who but not how, but at all costs he must stop Lathan from exposing him so he focus on the person closest to Lathan; Evanee.
Overall, this truly exceeded my expectations for the book.
This book was so good! I enjoyed this more than the first in the series, and the first book was good!
Lathan Montgomery has a unique gift where he can read memories, and uses this gift to help the FBI. Lathan is mentioned in the first book, but vaguely and in the first he just rides off. Lathan is a loner, keeps to himself, and avoids being around people as a way to protect himself from the overload his gift would give him. Until one night, he rounds a bend and encounters Evanee Brown, in need of help. He rescues Evanee from her tormentor, and gets more than he bargains for, when he leaves Evanee for a short bit, only to return, and find her holding a piece of evidence to a long standing case, that Lathan has been following. Problems is, Evanee brings lots of pieces of evidences. Gill, who is Lathan’s best friend, doesn’t trust Evanee and following a crime scene, starts to think, she’s a team player involved in the long standing case, that Lathan has been trying to solve.
If you enjoy books with a paranormal aspect, you will enjoy this book!
Book #2 in the Fatal Dream series..another wonderful book.
Nathan Montgomery is an FBI consultant he can read people’s emotions by there scents. Trying to locate a serial killer is not easy. Taking him to a part of Ohio he meets a waitress named Evanee Brown which comes a whole slew of interesting things. He’s drawn to her. She fights her own battles with something he tries to help her with.
Buy and see what happens. But read Race the Darkness first.
My Thoughts – 5 out of 5 Unicorns – I loved it!!!
***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!
The cover is mysterious and haunting all at the same time intriguing you into picking up the book! I won a copy of this book in paperback, but I loved the book so much that I bought the ebook too to support the author.
This is the 2nd book in the series. It is for adults only due to the graphic scenes as well as the steamy scenes.
Abbie has quickly found her way onto my favorites list for go to author’s for awesome reads. I can’t even put into words all the emotions and the depths each book goes into with layer upon layer of mysteries and plot. She has paranormal with murder mystery suspense, romance mixed with myth, and so much more.
This is Lathan’s story, and you are briefly introduced to him in the first book. I recommend reading both books in order because it definitely enriches reading book 2. Evanee and Lathan both have major stories all by themselves. This book was just as surprising as book 1 was with the twists and turns along the way which I wasn’t able to predict which is always a lovely surprise. I don’t want to give anything away, so you just have to read it and see for yourself.
I highly recommend this book and series to adults who love murder mysteries mixed with paranormal elements, myths, and romance! This book has it all! Don’t miss reading it!
Great Book! Absolutely loved it!!!
Very well written book with highly developed characters. I loved it and although it was dark, there was hope that was justified in the end. I’d definitely recommend it.
I was blow away. I had not read this author before, but I will follow in the future.
I’ve fallen in love once again. This time, my heart grew wings and took flight with the latest installment in the Fatal Dreams Series by Abbie Roads: Hunt the Dawn. A story filled with beauty, desire, heart, hope, light, and love is also a feat of complexity bleeding with fright, hate, horror, intensity, malevolence, and twisted perversion. Once again, the author created a masterpiece overflowing with every single emotion one can feel. Again, I can say that a novel has affected me so deeply that I find myself at a loss for what to read next.
Lathan as the hero of the story will from this point on hold a special place in my heart and in my soul. He is a man bearing his aura, his heart, and his pain on the outside physically while holding himself at arm’s length from the world around him. He is gentle and honest and refreshing in his demeanor as the main character. He is also intelligent, logical, and sharp despite his unusual capabilities, or perhaps is even more so because of them which makes him utter perfection in my eyes.
The damage that was inflicted upon him as a young man provided him with a unique ability, one that allows him to determine, sense, and track the evil that is ever present among us. He can smell, see, and taste the emotions and experiences of friends and strangers alike. The tragic childhood he suffered through, and unspeakable violence thrust upon him has caused him to seek solitude despite being a top agent of the FBI. As he embarks on a journey to stop The Strategist, a serial killer who he has personally linked to over 30 cold cases, he also finds the love of his life.
Evanee Brown is beautifully broken after enduring a childhood and young adulthood as a victim of abuse, rape, and violence. Those that were supposed to spend their life providing her with comfort, love, and support are nothing but monsters. She attempted to flee her former nightmare by running into the arms of someone powerful once, but was left to the wolves. Determined to be invisible, to be free from her family, she is on the run. Living in squalor, working in a place considered to be of ill-repute to earn enough money to disappear forever in hopes of finding security. When her former source of torment locates her, Lathan crashes into her life in an unexpected twist of fate that not only grants her protection and safety, but ecstasy and love as well.
As Lathan offers his faith, kindness, and solace in a world of darkness, Evanee becomes a beacon of hope to his tortured soul. They heal one another while peeling away the layers of grief in a time of madness. Their chemistry and love will ravish your senses and leave tingles in your heart as it flutters helplessly. Even in times of pulse-pounding and earth-shattering fear, when all may be lost as the past attempts to tear them apart and a psychotic killer threatens death, you will treasure this story. Lathan and Evanee as a couple, are the likes of which will take your breath away willingly.
This novel is everything anyone could want with its intricate plot and insane genius. With every turn of the page, one is left with the compulsive need to read further. Action, beauty, disbelief, disgust, heartache, love, murder, pain, romance, sex, terror, and tragedy intertwine and set the pages on fire with emotional upheaval. Abbie Roads is a force of captivating wonder in her ability to not only write heroes and heroines with such strength of character, but also to write deranged villains that I can empathize with as I begin to unravel the patterns lining the creation of their woven blanket of crazy. When one can literally uncover negative and positive feelings where there shouldn’t be one or the other depending on the situation, there is a fascinating level of talent found in such a piece of literature. I am reminded once again of the enchantment of the written word because of this story, and I hope that you will read it in the future.
***4 ‘What a hell of a ride’ Stars***
After finishing Race the Darkness I knew I was going to get my hands on the next book and knew that there would be a good dose of dark and crazy goodness going on, but I didn’t see all that coming at me and making it difficult to do a spoiler free review, but I will persevere…so here goes nothing.
Much of the reason I wanted to get my hands on Hunt the Dawn was because of Lathan, who we meet in Race the Darkness. I wanted to know more about him and what the tat on his face was all about and I was not disappointed at all. He’s as complex as I thought he would be and then some. The unique way in which he can read memories is mind blowing and though he has come to accept them for what it is and maintain some control of it, he’s had to become something of a hermit in order to do it. There is a kindness to him that one wouldn’t expect considering what he’s been through, which was pretty damn horrific, and though he should be a cynic and mad at the world, he isn’t.
To say Evanee is down-on-her-luck is an understatement, she never truly had a shot in hell, and yet she hasn’t given up on escaping the hell she’s living in and finding a slice of happiness. Even before finding out just how brutal her childhood was I loved Evanee’s fighting spirit and how she is world weary but her soul is still intact. She’s done what was needed to be done to keep herself safe and relatively sane and now that her dreams have found a way to merge with reality her inner strength is even more apparent.
Lathan and Evanee’s journey had a lot of bumps in the road, most of which were dark and crazy and coming at them from outside influences, that ended up bringing them closer together rather than tearing them apart. Fate steps in and throws them into each other paths and though things do progress quickly it’s not an insta-love situation. It’s a mutual sense of protectiveness for the other and the feelings of being safe when in the other presence. Their unique abilities also connect them and it was quite fascinating to see just how they complimented each other.
The writing was engaging and though there were spots that dragged a bit for me, I was fascinated by how everything played out with Lathan and Evanee’s relationship, their abilities and how the serial killer storyline was woven into the fabric of their story. If you didn’t read Race the Darkness you won’t be lost though the main characters from the book do make appearances in Hunt the Dawn. Also, this one has some pretty big triggers so if abuse of any kind is one of your triggers then you may want to tread carefully if you choose to read this book.

I love love love Abbie Roads!
I could not put this book down. So much action, thrills and chills. I especially loved the character building and relationship between Evanee and Lathan. I also loved the paranormal aspect of the story. Brilliantly executed and well written. Abbie Roads is an excellent storyteller.
Thank you Abbie for giving me the hero and heroine I needed! Lathan and Evanee are the perfect power couple in this twisted tale. They overcome so many physical and emotional obstacles proving love conquers all. She is his safe and he her protector. Also Lathan is officially my new favorite book boyfriend. He’s all the damaged steam!
So you know those books that are so good, with characters that are so powerful, you have a “book hangover” after reading them? Yeah, Hunt the Dawn definitely fits that category. I read Race the Darkness and Hunt the Dawn back-to-back, and I have to say Abbie Roads is amazing. The Sundew, Ohio world Roads has created is complex and rich.
Once again, Roads’ characters are damaged, but somehow not broken. Lathan is a minor character in Race the Darkness, but in Hunt the Dawn, he takes center stage. Similar to Xander, Lathan has a “gift” that feels is anything but one. And like Xander, he does his best use his “gift” to help others. Lathan has always been about to detect Sent Memories, or SMs. This is what drives his need to feel and be treated as “normal”. Evanee’s story is one that is all too common and real. The fact that she came out the other side relatively intact and functioning is a miracle all on its own. I thought it was very interesting that she never remembered her dreams until Lathan.
I really liked both the parallels and differences Roads used in both pairs. There were many similarities, and yet the were also almost opposites in other cases. This was one of those books I had to know what happened, but didn’t want to finish it. I look forward to reading more of Abbie Roads in the future!
This went above and beyond with more dream therapy. This got more exciting and packed with more emotions then you’ll ever imagine
Another amazing book in the Fatal Dreams series by Abbie Roads!!! A must read!!! Enjoy!!!
This was an absolutely amazing read. It drew me in, had my heart breaking for both Evanee and Lathan. It was awesome to see these two build their relationship, and see how their powers strengthen when they are together. The author drew me in from the beginning, and had me wondering how all of this was going to play out. There was a twist towards the end I never considered while reading this, and it was awesome to see these two cope with it.
If you are looking for a phenomenal paranormal read, you need to get this book!!
Wow! Where do I start?
This story hit me with both barrels from the very beginning. It was gritty, dark and messy and I unashamedly, loved it. All the feels came roaring off the pages in to my heart, mind and imagination.
Lathan, the pains and rejections of his past – his “special” gift and loss of his hearing caused him to wall himself away from others – to survive to not be ridiculed and looked upon as odd or defective. He does however, show a bit of a more compassionate side by working with his long time friend Gill as a special consultant with the FBI.
Evanee/Honey – Lathan’s nickname for her. She’s broken beyond repair- simply trying to endure and escape her small town and her family and the terrors and abuse that had occurred there.
When these two meet – Evanee finds within Lathan a hero – a protector something that no one else has ever done for her. Lathan finds hope and purpose.
Loved that as the story continued and the action and intrigue reached out and snatched me into the story – these two seemed to always come back to and continue the healing in each other – no matter what twists the journey through at them.
And I have to say – the end had me in tears….
Lathan Montgomery: rugged, handsome but damaged hero with something extra.
Evanee Brown: brutalized beauty that refuses to be a victim anymore, valiantly escaping a monster’s clutches… or does she?
What a team! Lathan Montgomery struggles with almost total deafness brought on by an injury in his early teens; but that’s not the total story. Evanee Brown was basically abandoned/sold at the age of five to a monster by her mother when she remarried. Again, not the whole story.
You truly feel you know these characters as you read the book; you feel their pain, their struggles, and you feel their triumphs as well. Amazing complex characters that reach out and grab your attention from the first sentence to the last period. Intriguing twists and turns, Abbie keeps you guess as to what is going to happen next.
A kiss of “other” in this suspenseful thriller only adds to the enjoyment. Would recommend this book to anyone (mature audience) that wants a thriller like no other.
