Definitely in the highest class of the shifter genre. No matter what she writes, tales by this author are always fantastic!
The Trouble with Beasts book 1
I don’t always read shifter series; too many are poorly written. This however is a series sculpted into life by a master storyteller. No matter the genre if it is written by D. Fischer, it is worth reading!
Meet Jinx Whitethorn, a witch without magic. She left the coven of her birth, unwelcome with no magical talents. But that is the least of her current troubles. She is being hunted by a group of shifters with a brand on their necks.
Jinx has no idea who they are or why they are out to kill her. In fact she doesn’t know how she has remained alive until now. At each moment she thinks she will certainly die, she blacks out, only to come to herself later in a different place.
Jinx doesn’t know what is wrong with her and has no one to turn to for help. She doesn’t want to endanger her closest friend, another witch, and she doesn’t know if she can trust the shifter who lets her crash above his bar. He is a shifter after all even if he doesn’t sport a brand on his neck.
Will Jinx unravel the mystery of the branded shifters who pursue her?
The Liar among Creatures book 2
Each person is unique. In a society that stresses normal, do you accept yourself for your differences or try to blend in? Embrace all that is different and dive in to this wonderful trilogy!
Jinx has never really felt that she belonged anywhere. As a witch without magic she was an outcast in her coven. Now living amongst the shifters, being protected by them, can she find a home at last? Or are there too many unanswered questions still, about who Jinx really is?
Meeting her aunt, trying to train and be in control of her skinwalking ability should make it possible to defend herself against the Bane? But can Jinx learn to trust? In herself, her family, and the pack?
The Rival of Species book 3
This dramatic ending to a unique series is a must read! This is such a well written series it is hard to believe it was conceived and written in such a short time. Your time will be well spent reading the series!
Having been betrayed by her aunt, Jinx withdraws from everyone. She dives instead into the forest and exploring her new abilities. Walking in an animals’ skin is no longer her problem. Instead she might just slip away into one of the creatures she becomes and not come back.
Jacob is determined to see that doesn’t happen. Coaxing her from her depression, they reach out to the witches of Jinx’s coven for information. Can the witches provide what they will need to finally defeat the Bane?
The “Howl for the Damned” Series by D. Fischer, is a wonderful blend of fast-paced action, romantic elements, intense characters and a thoroughly enjoyable urban fantasy plot. The plot develops nicely, throughout the books, the chemistry between Jacob and Jinx could really been cut with a knife from the very beginning. The rogue murders storyline is gripping with some unexpected twists, the romantic thread wholly enjoyable to the point of hilarity… Jinx is a wonderful character, strong in spite of all shortcomings, while Jacob is really just an Alpha out of his deep, who tries hard and eventually succeeds in rising to the surface.
D. Fischer is a born storyteller whose writing style blends fast-paced action, romantic elements, intense characters and unexpected twists into a very good story to create a fantastic series that honestly has it all: wonderful, fully fleshed and multidimensional characters at the heart of fast-packed action that keeps the reader heart pounding on the edge of the seat invested to find out what comes next; a mix of drama, suspense, thrill, secrets, romance and adventure; exceptional good writing that goes above and beyond great story-telling and into the realms of high-quality literature.
The Trouble with Beasts
Jinx Whitethorn has a problem… or three… First, these attackers coming out of nowhere, then the fainting spells at the most inopportune moment, and finally a propensity to wake in unintended places with no recollection whatsoever of how she ended up there. For good measure just add the fact that she is a witch with not magic of her own whatsoever…. At least something seems to be working out for her… she is obviously dodging her attackers just fine… if she only could make a rhyme of it all. Thus, for now, she contents herself with helping at Cinder’s bar, her friend and landlord (not that she ever makes the rent in time, or at all…)
Jacob Trent has another set of problems of his own, as Alpha of the Riva Pack he has taken on the responsibility to fight the rogue shifters that are attacking his territory and slowly decimating his pack, while trying to ignore the need to find a suitable mate, in spite of the not so subtle nudges of his pack members.
Determined to solve their problems, Jinx unearths the family secrets (just to end up wishes they have been remaining buried forever), while Jacob, in the course of trying to solve the rogue murders, stumbles right in the middle of Jinx secret. It is a perfect storm, Jacob’s “solution” to the situation is to abduct Jinx… let us just say it was probably not his best idea
The Liar Among Creatures
The plot explores the relationship between Jinx and Jacob and shows the ups and down of navigating their chemistry while taking care of their personal problems. Jinx finally discovers what it is “wrong” with her as she seeks the help of her aunt, the only surviving relative of her father’s. And so, she discovers the rare mix of shaman and witch magic that makes her unique. The discovery also unearths the powers of her father’s pendant and forces her to take some serious decisions about how and if to use these powers going forward.
The Rival of Species
Jinx and Jacob’s story continues, the traitor who betrayed Jinx trust has been found and Jinx and Jacob go back the Lotus Coven, in search of further information about the curse hanging over the Bane Pack. Bringing Jacob to a house full of witches doesn’t seen like a good move, even for a much more secure Jinx, but with the Bane Pack growing more desperate and violent by the day, to find all pertinent to break the original curse has become paramount.
While in the Coven, the power balance shifts in favour of the witches, but we also learn that Jinx is able to skin walk into any animal of her choosing and she would eventually be able to uncover the truth about the curse. Will she finally find her HEA… sorry you would need to find by yourself… not spoilers here, it will be a real disservice to such a wonderful story.
A nail-biting and breathtaking series! A wolf that is not a shifter. A witch without magic. Jinx is such a wonderful character who can really kick butt! I really love the intricacies of the inter relationships of the pack, it is so fascinating. I really love how everything and everyone comes together and I am interested in how the future will pan out. The characters are just awesome and the stories they have are fascinating. I truly loved this series!
The Trouble with Beasts
It begins with a nightmare that turns out to be all too real. A gruesome trail of dead bodies that seem to tell one story while simultaneously contradicting it. This action filled story is also a tale of self-discovery and redemption, with a bit of tender, burgeoning relationship type romance that stays clean.
Jinx is the kind of girl who makes her self at home, raids your fridge, and gets around to introductions later. Fiercely independent, she makes her own way – until she starts blacking out. Despite he way if wiggling herself into people’s lives, she’s never really belonged. Jacob is the stoic leader, dealing with the harsh aftermath of a devastating war, trying to protect his people – and himself.
Liar Among Creatures
Fast paced read filled with all the tension! Jinx and Jacob are both still dealing with A LOT of baggage from their past – and learning how to move forward. For a middle book in a series, it did a good job of character building and adding to the larger story arc while keeping the action going. The first book was all about reveals and Jinx learning what she is. This book looked further into who she is and and how she fits into a larger story she didn’t even know existed.
Rival of Species
Jinx and Sara are heading back to the home that never really felt like home in this fast paced trilogy climax, but this time they have their protectors, Jacob and Cinder, close by their sides. Book 2 explored the shifter side of the issues, this book delves deeper into the witches’ society. And the more they learn, the more doesn’t quite add up. Both Jinx and Sara face difficult decisions as they learn more about themselves, their powers, the Bane pack, the the curse that draws them all together. The ending was not what I expected – but very satisfying.
This is a spin off series, but can be read enjoyably without having read any other books in this world. Fair warning, if you haven’t read any of Fischer’s other books you will probably want to after reading this series!
