A Delightful story that will keep you turning the pages. Gabe Adamson never intended to go back. Born and growing up on the streets of one of London’s worst areas, Whitechapel, he did whatever was needed for he and his sister to survive. Now, working at a publishing company he worked he way up, but is determined to keep order in all he does. But sometimes fate steps in the way in the form of Clary Ruthven, sister of his employer. Having known each other for years, but never really getting along, a situation happens when he comes upon her fending off a man.
Clary only wants to be independent and keep helping the less fortunate women in London. Waiting only to inherit her funds from her father, she finds out she has to marry first and it will be her dowry. Getting ready to take her place as part owner of the business, she has to work with Gabe and that is when the fun begins. They are really exact opposites, but as the saying goes, opposites can attract.

When I picked up this enemies to friends to lovers book, I didn’t realize it was part of a series, but How to Woo a Wallflower is a complete love story on its own. I have to say, I really enjoyed the setting and premise. At the beginning of the story, the heroine inherits a third of her father’s publishing business, and the hero is a self-made man who rose above his humble beginnings to become the manager of the publishing business. You don’t see many heroes who aren’t born into privilege in Victorian romances, or Regency for that matter. It was refreshing! Plus, I liked seeing the characters interacting in a work setting and on equal footing. The banter made me smile throughout. All in all, this was a satisfying read, and I’m interested in reading the first two books in the series.
I liked the whole series and each was a little different. Each character in the series had their own quirks that needed to be worked out. This one had the most complicated storyline for the characters and I like that about it. Clarissa and Gabriel were not your typical regency period characters because they both had more complexity to them. I like complex characters coming together in their own terms.
I really liked this book, especially since I always like books where the H and h don’t like each other at first. I have to knock down one star because I don’t like explicit sex scenes. They’re just not necessary.
Great characters and wonderful story.
A Dynamite High 5 Stars for How to Woo a Wallflower by Christy Carlyle. This series just gets better and better! Clarissa Ruthven is a proper young lady who’s in quite a pickle, she can’t get her inheritance until she marries. She wants nothing of the sort, she’s an independent and self-disciplined woman who does not need a man in her life… or so she thinks. She spends her spare time volunteering at Miss Fisk’s boarding school for unfortunate girls. This is truly where Clarissa’s heart belongs, she loves these girls and wants to help them become something in society… however, without her inheritance, she can’t help them. In order to help earn money, she works at her family’s publishing company, there’s just one problem, her boss… He’s irresistible but he doesn’t like her… however, she soon changes his mind and he begins to fall for her.
Carlyle’s writing is impeccable, she weaves a tale of such passion and add in interesting twists and turns that keeps one reading long into the wee hours of the morning. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it to any historical romance fanatic!
