I loved that this story did not follow the typical, historical romance ‘formula’. It was a very unique tale that immediately drew me in. The characters were vivid and complex and made the story seem so realistic, that I often felt like I was actually there watching the story unfold.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
WOW! What a tangled web Penelope and Edith weave when first they practice to deceive! Slowly all the pieces start falling together that shove who the real villains are. How to Catch an Earl With Ten Lies is well-written with well-developed characters, quick-witted banter between the characters and a story line that kept me interested right to the end and wanting more from Patricia Haverton. Penelope has turned many wedding proposals down and she doesn’t want to get married ever! Edith is shy and reserved and is not ready for marriage. Benjamin who has emotional scars has just returned to England and finds out he must marry to gain full access to his inheritance. Benjamin decides to start courting Edith but the sisters decide to switch places. With so many emotions that bombard Benjamin and Penelope as take journey to admitting their love for one another. It’s a sweet romance full of emotion, uncertainty, drama, suspense, insecurities, trials and tribulations and while the suspense builds, tensions escalate and all twist and turns abound that makes for one outstanding story!
Penelope (Penny) and Edith Chapman are two sisters that currently live with their Uncle Horace after their parents death. Uncle Horace wants both girls to get married so their futures will be secured after his passing. Penny has turned all her suitors down so Uncle Horace decides to find a husband for Edith, who he thinks will be more pliable. Wrong!
When Uncle Horace announces that he has found a husband for Edith, both girls are stunned. Penny offers to lose as Edith get to know the gentleman, Benjamin Gray, Earl of Newhorn, and see if he is suitable for Edith. Sounds simple. Add to that the fact that Benjamin just returned from a decade of being exiled due to a duel he participated in a decade earlier. Penny is determined to find out the truth about what really happened in regards to the duel.
I really enjoyed d the way the various plots are seamlessly interwoven into the the storyline. Great character development.

I really enjoyed reading this book. There are so many characters with secondary storylines that the story never gets stale. The main storyline of the h taking the place of her younger sister in order to avoid an unwanted marriage goes awry. The H thinks he is courting the younger sister is actually courting the eldest the h. Now the H has an interesting and sad background. In order to inherit he needed to wed and produce an heir. The h did not want to lie to the H but she was protecting her sister. However, the time she spent with the H was authentic and she was herself. and found herself becoming more and more in love with him. In the meantime, the H’s past came to haunt him. The villain wanted to crush the H and h’s guardian; bring them to penury so he could enact his evil machinations. What no one knew was the h’s younger sister had fallen in love with a law clerk who wanted to marry her but could not afford to for at least three or four years when he would finish his studies. Luckily for all parties this law clerk came across some damning information that the villain was trying to hurt his loves guardian and the H. The clerk and his father who was a partner of the firm took action. But in the end, it was an adorable loving elderly lady that put everything together and exposed all. The villain not to be outdone stabbed the H and ran away. The H was confined to rest for a few days before he was allowed to be moved. He declared his love for h and the h reciprocated. There was so much drama and action in this story you will not be bored for one moment. This is a page turner. There were some surprising and shocking twists and turns in the story. I was completely immersed in the story that I could not put the book down. I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.
Miss Penelope Chapman and Miss Edith Chapman were wards of their Uncle Horace. Penelope had turned down dozens of marriage offers so their uncle arranged for the younger Edith to meet and be courted by Benjamin Gray, the Earl of Newhorn. In a twist of fate Penelope acted as Edith to ferret out the truth about the earls banishment for the last ten years. Instead she fell in love. Will the earl be able to forgive Penny and will the truth about his banishment, and about the death of his sister set the young earl free? Loved this action packed book…definitely recommend it!
“How to Catch an Earl with Ten Lies” by Patricia Haverton
A sweet clean historical (Victorian?) romance. I received an ARC of the story from the author with the request for an honest review. So here we go. I liked the story. It was rather fun getting to know all the characters and what part they would play in the story. The story did seem rather long to me as at times it seemed to take forever to make any progress in the adventure that was this story. And then like so often happens, all of a sudden everything came to a head and the story conflict was over. If you are a patient reader I think you will like this story… If you are an impatient reader such as myself, you may like the story, just expect to get impatient from time to time. Happy Reading ! !
The story started out with a switch of identity between two sisters, one of whom didn’t want to get married. This was a bit of a wild ride with sisters trying to hide things from their uncle and a suitor; ships carrying precious cargo which vanished before getting back to England; old rumors swirling around and many other surprises in store. I loved the twists and turns in the tale and how it circled through several people but it the end you see how it all tied in together. Great read!

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who loves Regency Romances. The writing is first-rate with interesting characters. I especially liked the dialogue. A lot of authors, in an attempt to make their characters speak in the more formal English, end up with stilted or choppy conversations. For me that greatly reduces my enjoyment of their books. Patricia Haverton, however, has nailed it. The dialogue is natural while keeping the formal titles, etc. In addition to that, she weaves many old British words throughout the story as naturally as you or I would talk. The result is a delightful combination. The characters created plenty of confusion, tension, and secrets. I couldn’t guess how it would all work out, but thankfully it’s HEA. There are only a handful of spots that need editing, and certainly not enough to detract from the story or lose a star.
