The #1 New York Times Bestseller“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” –Leonard CohenChristmas is approaching, and in Qu bec it’s a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide … Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn’t spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away from the city. Mystified by Myrna’s reluctance to reveal her friend’s name, Gamache soon discovers the missing woman was once one of the most famous people not just in North America, but in the world, and now goes unrecognized by virtually everyone except the mad, brilliant poet Ruth Zardo.
As events come to a head, Gamache is drawn ever deeper into the world of Three Pines. Increasingly, he is not only investigating the disappearance of Myrna’s friend but also seeking a safe place for himself and his still-loyal colleagues. Is there peace to be found even in Three Pines, and at what cost to Gamache and the people he holds dear?

Love her stories and the characters she has developed into old friends when you read her books. Always feel like the characters were old friends visiting and feel sadness when they leave. Always looking forward to the next book. Yay Louise Penny.
One of the great joys of reading is coming upon a series that you would have never read at first glance. This has happened to me with the Inspector Gamache Series by Louise Penny. I’m a not a big mystery or crime fiction reader. However, I read The Long Way Home two years ago and was immediately taken by the characters and the setting of Three …
Even if you don’t like mysteries in general, read Louise Penney. The characters are wonderful, and this book is the climax of a multi-book buildup.
Penney is a truly wonderful writer and I never miss a book of hers. I am always delighted with her characters and her storyline. She sets a wonderful mood against a gorgeous background.
Everything she writes is awesome
Love Louise Penny and Armand Gamache. All the books are wonderful and the characters are finely drawn over the course of the series. Can’’t wait for the new one in August.

All of Louise Penny’s books are the best out there! Read them in in order for the maximum effect.
Louise Penny is great and the characters from Three Pines become like family
I am a fan of Chief Inspector Gamache and this was one of the highlights of the series. Three Pines is a delightful little place and it’s always enjoyable to go visit.
Louise Penny is brilliant as always. No one does well-written, thoughtful mysteries better, and “How the Light Gets In” is just one more. Highly recommend her entire series.
OMG, Ms. Penny just killed it with this book! Wow, wow, wow!!
Gamache and Jean Guy and Lacoste and Nicole and all the Three Piners…every character is so three dimensional and so real!
Armand Gamache is one of favorite fictional characters ever!!
I love Louise Penny’s fictional ‘ Three Pines’ both for its village charm and the community of eclectic interesting characters who live their and share friendship .
I’ll read everything I can get my hands on by Louise Penny
Detective Gamache is everything he should be. Excellent crime fiction in several layers!
Louise Penny’s books about Inspector Gamach are wondeful. I love the characters of Three pines. I would love to live there if it truly existed. The mysteries are good in themselves but the characters make it much more enjoyable
any Inspector Gamanche book is good. they just keep getting better.
I have enjoyed all of the books that I’ve read in this series and recommend them to anyone that loves murder mysteries.
I’d give this 10 stars if I could! Start at the beginning of this series, and then wait patiently each year for the next book. Louise Penny is a goddess as far as I’m concerned!
A different kind of mystery with an unlikely twist – one you are not sure who did it. Gets even better as it goes on. Recommend highly!
