WHEN THIS DOCTOR TALKS, YOU SHOULD LISTEN.Thousands of people make an early exit each year and arrive on medical examiner Jan Garavaglia’s table. What is particularly sad about this is that many of these deaths could easily have been prevented. Although Dr. Garavaglia, or Dr. G, as she’s known to many, could not tell these individuals how to avoid their fates, we can benefit from her experience … experience and profound insight into the choices we make each day.
In How Not to Die, Dr. G acts as a medical detective to identify the often-unintentional ways we harm our bodies, then shows us how to use that information to live better and smarter. She provides startling tips on how to make wise choices so that we don’t have to see her, or someone like her, for a good, long time.
• In “Highway to the Morgue,” we learn the one commonsense safety tip that can prevent deadly accidents—and the reason you should never drive with the windows half open
• “Code Blue” teaches us how to increase our chances of leaving the hospital alive—and how to insist that everyone caring for you practice the easiest hygiene method around
• “Everyday Dangers” informs us why neat freaks live longer—and the best ways to stay safe in a car during a lightning storm
Using anecdotes from her cases and a liberal dose of humor, Dr. G gives us her prescription for living a healthier, better, longer life—and unlike many doctors’ orders, this one is surprisingly easy to follow.

Dr. G uses her cases to show how she figured out the cause of death in various cases, and outlines the steps people can take to avoid a similar fate.
An exceptional, informative and thoughtful book! I learned a lot and was inspired the same time. In a respectful, yet entertaining way, the author illustrates deceased people’s ominous life choices and tragedies and offers advice on how to do better in life. In example, she explains how horrid most automotive accidents end up and it made me be a …
Enlightening and informative. Dr. G’s frank discussions about every day hazards of life is an entertaining mix of medical facts and the consequences of some unfortunate choices and unknown dangers. She brings an element of humanity to the medical examiner profession while imparting relevant, real-world advice. And yes, I now think twice before …
I found it to be very interesting.
Eye opening. Don’t ignore what your body is telling you.
Fascinating
Her writing is like her TV show. Interesting and entertaining. Plus you can learn something!
Reading the each of the stories of how people visited her table was surprising. It was also scary to hear how little thought some people put into their existence. Her stories give us a lot of reasons to not do what follow what others did to end up in her book.
Imagine if your wife were a medical examiner by day and a housewife and mother by night. What would the dinner conversation sound like? Would you ask, “Well, Honey, how was your day?”
While the author did not reveal a great deal about her home life, you get the impression that it is actually pretty normal — for someone who spends her day …
I have watched her show on TV. The information in this book makes you stop and think
Wow, important book and who wouldn’t want to avoid unnecessary problems, early death. but…I couldn’t get past the first 1/3 of it. It’s not for the squeamish.
Full of great information and advice. Loved the last chapter. I have suggested to several of my friends. I also watch her TV show regularly and find her to be personable and practical.
Very thought provoking book about how people die for other than natural causes and simple, logical precautions to avoid these circumstances.
A very interesting read about what you can so to improve your chances of living a long life. Some of it is of course common sense–avoid excessive alcohol, obesity, smoking, recreational drugs, but other aspects are much more striking, such as what causes most fatal car collisions (t-bone crashes at intersections being one). The case studies are …
Well done and important information.
Very iformative experiences and advice of a medical examiner
Thought provoking book on how to forestall ending up on an exam table with a pathologist cutting you open. I didn’t know why it is dangerous to ride in an automobile with the windows down. Now I do.
Practical information to live by. Very helpful conclusions
I really enjooyed this book. It is fast paced and really interesting.
This is a great book with lots of good advice and great information to inspire you to be healthier, more careful and more aware. The only think I don’t like about it is that in the Nook edition, you can’t read the tables – at all.
