As much as she wants to hate having him around, she can’t. He helps navigate cringeworthy paparazzi photos, handle vain male co-stars, and hold back rabid crowds who would do anything to have a piece of Kiki.

A quick, easy, fun read!
Rachael Eliker is a new author for me, but I enjoyed this book so much, I will be on the look out for her next book! This was such a fun book! Kiki and Josh knew each other in high school, but Josh never seemed to know Kiki was there. She finished school early so that she could follow her dream to become a pop star. Her record label decided that she needed a body guard while on tour. And of course, it is ex-football star from high school Josh who is assigned to keep Kiki safe.
Kiki is done with people using her for their own needs. Her ex-boyfriend was the worst, and when he returns as the manager of Kiki’s backup singer, she knows he’s up to no good. But Josh is there when she needs him most. A relationship with Josh would mean, he will lose his security contract with the label, and with Kiki travelling the planet in concerts, Josh would not be able to be with her.
Both Kiki and Josh have issues they need to overcome, but the humour in the situations, and the love they share shines through. I loved the connection between the two main characters, as well as the insecurities. I did find Kiki a bit much in her quickness to find fault, but I assume she just needs to grow out of that and communicate better with others. The pool game was probably one of the funniest revenges I’ve read in a while.
I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it.
This book was so much fun to read. The last thing Kiki wanted was a bodyguard – especially not one she went to grade school with! Why is Josh the only man Kiki’s dog Cinnamon likes? These characters were just so interesting and well written. The ex-boyfriend also makes an appearance to keep the plot interesting. I was very sorry to get to the end. I highly recommend this sweet, clean romance.
The characters in this story were masterful. Kiki was the perfect blend of flawed humanity and likable. Josh was everything you could want in a hero, strong and kind. You couldn’t help but be drawn in by their story and want to cheer them along.
This is a highly entertaining and sweet story that will keep you glued until the end!
Kiki is a diva and I’m not sure how I liked her. This book gave us a good prespective on this character. The author did well on humanizing her and giving us her background. The H was great and gave great balance and to Kiki. We all need someone to help us to not take ourselves too seriously and stay grounded. I liked how the plot came along and the story had a nice pace. Good characters and just a fun story. The whole series is great. It’s fun to see the other characters peppered along the book
This is the first book by Rachael Eliker that I read and I enjoyed it immensely. HOW A STAR SHINES is a clean read, no sex scenes nor graphic language. But it is full of sweet romance and instant chemistry between Kiki and Josh. Kiki is a famous singer and is assigned a bodyguard (Josh) who happened to be a childhood schoolmate of hers in years past. The story is written well and the plot is strong. The author paints a picture with her words and the reader feels as though one is looking into the music world of a rock star. The characters are insecure and flawed, making them very relatable. The story features the good and the bad parts of fame, including those persons the star is surrounded by. The author also shares a comedic side through her characters’ vernacular, both in misuse of language and southern colloquialism. A book I could not put down.
An enjoyable fun, fast paced romance between a popstar and her bodygaurd who she went to school with. Kiki distrusts because she has been used so much from peopke wanting to futher their own careers. Josh remembers shy sweet Kiki from younger and her secrets. Knowing their real selves makes for an entertaining and interesting romance. Throw in a little drama from the ex boyfriend makes for engaging must read.
How a Star Shines, a romance by Rachael Eliker, is a fun romp with a rock star and her bodyguard. Coincidentally, they went to junior high together, but that was a long time ago. Tired of being used by people who want to further their own careers, Kiki Loveless is skeptical and it is beginning to affect her career: her songs and her performances. She is attracted to her bodyguard but there are things about him that make her nervous, too. Is he like the others?
This is a fun book. The characters are varied and entertaining. The plot is far from original but the quirky characters make all the difference and this become a totally enjoyable read. So much about Kiki’s life is realistic, which is always a plus. Kiki is human, above all: her tendency to fall at inopportune times, he ability to carry a grudge and defend herself in a funny way, and her fear of heights (a common malady).
This is the first book I’ve read by Eliker but it won’t be the last! If you are looking for an enjoyable read, give it a try!
I received a free ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
