Konkoly has outdone himself with a novel that will engage fans of both the techno-thriller and post-apocalyptic genres. The pages almost turn themselves in this can’t miss start to a new, compelling series that imagines a world where chaos reigns and conspiracies run deep.
Totally recommend this series. Konkoly has a great action packed writing style that keeps your pulse racing.
I’m a sucker for these apocalyptic novels, and this one–well, all of Steven’s books that I’ve read, are head and shoulders above the rest. I put that this is haunting because it’s a story that will make you wonder what you’d do in the same circumstances.
It took a minute for the story to really get started, as some groundwork was necessary to build it up. Once pace picked up it stayed that way to the finish. I’m pretty picky when it comes to viral outbreak type books, but I love them and am always happy to come across a good one. I really enjoyed Hot Zone & am hoping book 2 will be just as good.
very good
Cannot wait for the next novel in the series.
It’s a great read
This is one of the few “this could happen” books that I like. I don’t like thinking about all of the horrible things that happen in the work. I can read a book about zombies because that is a bit far fetch, at leat the way the zombies are written. But a deadly desease found in a lab monkey getting out… This could happen. Many angencies around the work work with biochemicals, whether for prevention, treatment or weapons of war. Who knows what is really behind those steel doors and keycard locks. But the hot zone really draws ypu into this story and get you thinking.
This series of 3 books is excellent.
This is book 1 in Konkoly’s “Zulu Virus” 3-book series. SPOILERS. Over the course of a few short days, a deadly epidemic races through Indianapolis, overwhelming hospitals and emergency services. It’s nothing medical professionals have ever seen before, culminating in rage and paranoia that turns patients suddenly deadly violent. We learn that approximately 25 cities across the US are similarly afflicted, confirming that this is bio-terrorism rather than some natural disaster. The rapid, well-orchestrated response of military authorities suggests it is an inside job of sorts – some group within the government or military is behind the attacks. The story follows several groups of people whose paths ultimately cross and converge: a police detective in an Indianapolis suburb with his seventeen year-old son, the leader of a spec ops team of some mysterious government militia who refuses to carry out an unlawful assassination order, the scientist he was ordered to eliminate who may have the cure for the deadly virus, an emergency room doctor, a national guard unit that goes rogue when ordered to abandon helpless citizens, and more. The three-book series is suspenseful and well-crafted. The characters are engaging and appealing, with thoroughly satisfying heroes and villains. The science does not stand up to much scrutiny, but that’s not the point of this very effective suspense series. We never learn the ultimate fate of a few of the main characters, and the government conspiracy behind the bioterrorism is also never revealed to any significant extent, or explained to the reader’s satisfaction. To me, that was the greatest flaw in the series, but it can be willingly overlooked in consideration of a really entertaining thriller.
The first book in this series is not even close to a complete work. Didn’t really “end” the first book, just stopped writing. Want more? Buy the next book. At least some authors will semi-wrap up a book and tease you to continue with the next book in the series.
Makes one wonder if this is where we are heading
Stupid concept, poor characters, silly plot; BORING!!!
Author has done better work
The premise of the book was great – the use of biological weapons as a tool for “social engineering.” The book, however, was too wordy and the author took too long to get to the point.
Predictable much like others with this story line.
A Good story but I have no interest in reading more of this series
This book was scary in that a pandemic could alter everything. Though I am not a gun nut. This book makes me think about self defense and self preservation.
This book was terrifyingly amazing. Everything started out relatively slowly and built to a horrifying cressendo. Trapped in a quarantine zone, not exactly knowing what’s going on, it’s a struggle and a fight to get out. I hope Steven Konkoly can write quickly because I don’t know how long I can wait to continue reading this addictive story.
I also loved the little reference to one of his other novels. No worries if you haven’t read it. It’s all explained. It was nice to see it in another book. Makes like the world is connected and not just the land of one story book at a time.
Move over Michael Crichton, theres a new sheriff in town. If you like Crichton, and who doesn’, you will love the Hot Zone.
