I usually enjoy Lauren’s book and this wasn’t the exception. It was true to Lauren’s style. However, I felt like something was missing. I liked the characters interaction and exchanges but it didn’t make me believe that there was something between them.
I want to read the next book in this series, I feel there is so much more to tell in this world.
Hot Asset was such a quintessential Lauren Layne book, perfect remedy for whatever ails you.
I love reading about men in suits, especially men in suits who are closeted good boys pretending to be bad boys. Ian Bradely perfectly fit the bill. One of the things I like the most about Lauren Layne is how seamless and effortless her stories are. They can easily be read in one go and you can feel a whole bunch of emotions throughout. Something that’s guaranteed in a Lauren Layne book is the swoon factor and her ability to make the readers laugh. Hot Asset was no different. I had a smile throughout the 4-5 hours it took me to read this book. There certainly were sad, emotional moments in the book, but most of it was a happy breeze.
Ian Bradely is one of the Wolfe’s of Wall Street. A Wall Street hotshot with a seven-figure salary, the corner office and a slew of broken hearts behind him, Ian is the definition of a cocky, self-assured, ridiculously handsome man. He still hasn’t met a woman he can’t charm. That is until Lara McKenzie walks in and refuses to fall for his heart-stopping smile and sexy one-liners.
Lara McKenzie is a woman on a mission. An ambitious woman with a set dream, she is determined to walk in the footsteps of her FBI agent parents and become a part of FBI’s White Collar Division. To achieve her dream, she needs to prove the accusations against Ian Bradley for insider trading. Lara is determined to prove Ian guilty, and he is determined to prove her wrong. When two such strong personalities clash, fireworks are imminent.
I absolutely loved Lara. She is an ambitious woman, but she also has integrity and doesn’t believe in walking over people to reach her goals. While it was very important that Ian be proven guilty in order to achieve her goals, she went where the case took her, irrespective of the end result. And, she is no doormat. She never lets anyone walk all over her. She is as strong as they come.
Ian himself is a seemingly bad boy with a heart of gold. A guy who would buy his foster-father a new TV every time it broke (which was quite often), someone who would painstakingly care for a plan just because his assistant wanted to win a bet, Ian was a knight in the guise of a wolf. He appreciates Lara for who she is. He gives her dreams as much importance as his dreams. He works to make her dreams come true even if it could mean that he might lose her. Lauren Layne still hasn’t written a guy whom I haven’t loved.
One of the things I love about a LL book is that the supporting characters are always as good as the protagonists. The bunch of people we met in this book, viz. Kennedy (I have a feeling I will fall head over heels for him. Nerdy men in suits are my kryptonite), Matt, Kate (who is the assistant to all three Wolfe’s of Wall Street), Sabrina and Victoria are all such well fleshed out characters that I can’t wait to read their stories. Right after I was done with Hot Asset, I wanted to read Matt and Sabrina’s story.
The one thing I did wished to see in this book was Ian’s meeting with Lara’s parents and Lara’s meeting with Ian’s foster dad, and that was missing. Apart from this one little thing, I absolutely adored this book. In fact I am already gearing up for a re-read. Now I know what to pick up on a day when I feel low and need a pick me up. So thank you Lauren Layne.
Lara McKenzie takes her job as an Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigator very seriously. Her latest case is for a typical slimy, Wall Street hotshot accused of insider trading. With a first impression cementing her assessment of his character, she has no doubt that Ian is too slick for his own good…
Ian Bradley has worked hard to get where he is. When he is accused of cheating by way of insider trading, he is determined to prove his innocence. It doesn’t help that he is infatuated with the SEC investigator working his case. Sure, she’s looking to pin some hefty charges on him, but Ian is used to getting what he wants, and the no nonsense Lara is something he can’t seem to stop himself from wanting…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really enjoyed this book! Lara and Ian’s combative relationship made for a sexy and fun break to the weighty investigation that could end up costing Ian everything…
Lara’s job at the SEC is a stepping stone to her dream of working for the FBI. Being a part of a high profile case like Ian’s would solidify her chances of being noticed by the agency she longs to work for. With so much on the line, being attracted to the one man who she needs to keep a professional relationship with is a serious problem.
Ian prides himself on being an honest and giving man. Being investigated for insider trading is bad enough, but having his character tarnished in the process is especially hard to deal with. And even though he doesn’t take his situation lightly, his desire for Lara is something that could quickly getting out of hand.
With Lara and Ian in an impossible situation, when things start to get heated between them, what will happen if the truth of their relationship is exposed…
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
Hot Asset starts off another series of interconnected characters by the never disappointing Lauren Layne. Ian starts off a bit smug, but he does have cause. And it sure was fun seeing Lara put him in his place. Great banter, hot love scenes and an engaging story all line up for another hit by Layne
Lauren Layne launches the 21 Wall Street series with the story of attractive and successful investment broker Ian Brady, and the determined SEC agent tasked to investigate him.
Ian isn’t deterred when he learns the true identity of the only woman who doesn’t instantly swoon over his good looks and natural magnetism and he’s certain of two things. One, he’s never taken a shortcut to reach his goals and achieve success. Two, he always gets what he wants and he wants Lara.
Ian is unapologetic about the way the leads his life. He didn’t grow up privileged but has worked hard all his life to reach his goals, including having the funds to support his ailing father and the means to enjoy life.
Lara is equally hard working and effective at what she does and is resolute in fulfilling her dream of becoming an FBI agent and Ian’s case just might get her there. But at what cost?
Lara and Ian are appealing characters, they have strong and determined personalities that go along with their careers and make them an attractive central couple whose banter, inner monologues and chemistry had me smiling, laughing and fanning myself.
Layne also creates an interesting cast of secondary characters whose loyalty was admirable, complement Ian and Lara’s story nicely, and set intriguing foundations for future books.
Set in the fast paced Wall Street backdrop, Lauren Layne upholds her lighthearted, fun, witty and sexy standard creating this entertaining tale of two people who weren’t looking for love but found it in unorthodox circumstances and despite the odds worked to overcome them.
Hot Asset is book #1 of the 21 Wall Street series by Lauren Layne. It is a standalone, contemporary romance. Told from both points of view with a happily ending, no cliffhanger.
Hot Asset by Lauren Layne is the first book in the 21 Wall Street Series. This is the story of Ian Bradley and Lara McKenzie.
Ian is a very successfully Wall Street investor who has it all it would seem.
Lara is becoming one of the Top White Collar investigators and is looking into if Ian is doing insider trading. There is a instant attraction between the two. But Lara has to do her investigation on him but her growing emotions are something else. Ian thought he had it all but his feelings for Lara are starting to show him there is more to his life he doesn’t have.
Enjoyed reading their story.
Lauren Layne just never disappoints. She just nails it every single time. Some books more than others, but they are all nailed LOL Her style is so easy to just get lost in the story and she makes sure her stories have just the right amount of humor to make your heart giddy with excitement. I dunno, she just makes me feel good while I’m reading her books. I don’t know any other way of putting it.
Okay, so let’s review. So Ian is a big shot on Wall Street. Self made big shot. He climbed out of the system and made a name for himself. He’s a playboy thru and thru. Doesn’t get attached and plays by the book on Wall Street. Lara is an SEC agent investigating Ian. But what seems to be is not always what is …. Lost of backdoor shenanigans going on in this book that will kinda, maybe keep you guessing but the real attraction is our opposite leads, Ian and Lara. On paper, they should hate each other … but the heart wants what the heart wants. 🙂
I was genuinely entertained by this story. The only part I would have liked to have been a bigger deal was the talk/question Ian had with Dave … it turned out underwhelming and anticlimactic and there’s a build-up in the story for it so I thought that was a missed opportunity in the storyline. But a very very very tiny point LOL
I’ve been anticipating the release of the 21 Wall Street series ever since Miss Layne announced it. This author never fails to write swoon-worthy professional heroes as well as take charge heroines- a combination that’s often lacking in contemporary romances, particularly when the hero is a high-powered businessman. In many ways, Hot Asset is just what I expected- strong characters with a good amount of depth, a clever story, a sweet romance, low angst, and plenty of interesting secondary characters that ensure I’ll be make for more.
I liked Lara and Ian quite a bit and really enjoyed the premise of the story. The dialogue was bright and propelled the storyline, including a good amount of banter showcasing the characters’ wit and personalities. Lara and Ian fit together naturally too, despite initially seeming so different, making their romance almost too easy in some ways. And I loved all the secondary characters introduced. Obviously, there is plenty of good things to say about Hot Asset. What was missing from this book was the palpable connection. While there certainly was chemistry between Ian and Lara, it wasn’t quite as compelling as other couples this author has written. They fit, but I didn’t feel the magnetic pull, and it kept me from getting swept away by the romance. I kept wanting that little bit more from the individuals and couple. That said, this author remains an auto-read for me because I love her smooth, polished writing style and consistent delivery of interesting characters, without a lot of undue angst. Hot Asset was a good start to Miss Layne’s newest series, and one I’ll recommend and look forward to reading more from in the future.
Perfect slow-burn, enemies to lovers romance! LL is one of my go-to authors for contemporary romance and this book reaffirmed why she’s on that list. I loved all of the characters and can’t wait to see what plays out for them in future books.
Sexy and smart Wall Street hotshot in a forbidden romance with the SEC agent investigating him for insider trading? Completely irresistible premise, and there was no question I wanted my grabby hands on this book! What I found within was a solid start to this fun new series. Oh, and some delicious literary suit porn, of course.
Smartly written and full of the sort of snappy banter I’ve come to love about this author, it was so easy to fall into Ian and Lara’s story. I might have liked to have a little more of that at times because in the end I felt like their love story moved very quickly and my heart didn’t always keep up for the ride. I felt like perhaps I didn’t connect with Lara the way Ian did, like I was missing something about her that caused him to fall so hard and so quickly. I might have liked to see more vulnerability there – though in the end my heart caught up and I was beyond happy with their happily ever after.
The secondary characters in this one book were so much fun to read, and their interactions and interference with Ian and Lara’s story were perhaps one of my favorite parts of this book. I adored Ian’s friends and the way they interacted with each other. They are funny, fiercely protective, fun – and I am so excited to dig deeper into their stories.
In the end, this was a great start of a new series for me. I’m definitely invested, and definitely want more where this came from. ~ Shelly, 3.5 Stars
HOT ASSET is the first instalment in Lauren Layne’s contemporary, adult 21 WALL STREET romance series. This is thirty-two year old Wall Street investor Ian Bradley, and twenty-eight year old SEC agent Lara McKenzie’s story line.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Lara and Ian) HOT ASSET follows the building but forbidden relationship between Wall Street investor Ian Bradley, and SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) agent Lara McKenzie. An anonymous tip to the SEC found our hero, Ian Bradley, being investigated for insider trading. Enter SEC agent Lara McKenzie, and the woman with whom Ian would fall in love. What ensues is the building but forbidden relationship between Ian and Lara, and the potential fall-out as Lara’s findings are ignored by the people in charge.
Ian Bradley grew up in the foster care system, and has worked for every penny and dollar he has earned. A womanizer by reputation, Ian struggles in his attempts to seduce the stoic SEC agent, but something about Lara gives him pause. Behind the librarian glasses, and professional decorum, Lara hides a goddess that Ian hopes to control. Someone is out to destroy Ian’s life using Lara McKenzie in the process, but Ian isn’t willing to go down without a fight.
The relationship between Lara and Ian begins acrimoniously when Ian discovers the reasons behind our heroine’s visit. Not only is Ian innocent of all of the charges but Lara insists that she must continue to investigate until the very end. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. There is plenty of back and forth, sexual banter between our leading couple, banter that crosses the line as Ian tries desperately to seduce the woman looking into his life.
There is a wonderful cast of secondary and supporting characters who are a little bit protective of our story line hero. We are introduced to his best friends and fellow investors twenty-eight year old Matt Cannon, and thirty two year old Kennedy Dawson; attorney Vanessa Lewis, fixer and PR Rep Sabrina Cross, and PA Kate Henley; Lara’s boss Steve Ennis, and his brother in law Jacob Houghton.
Matt and Sabrina’s story line is next in Hard Sell.
The world building looks at the close friendships between Ian, Kennedy and Matt, and their PA Kate Henley; Ian’s backstory and his struggles growing up in the foster care system; as well as Lara’s fight to prove she is worthy of working for the FBI.
HOT ASSET is a spirited and edgy story line. The premise is imaginative and engaging; the characters are colorful, energetic and charismatic; the romance is captivating and sensual. Lauren Layne’s HOT ASSET is a wonderful and sexy start to her 21 Wall Street series.
4.5 wondrous stars!
A sexy, slow burn forbidden love story. Hot Asset is the first book in Lauren Layne’s 21 Wall Street series. Witty and entertaining, Lauren did an amazing job bringing us into the world of Wall Street.
Ian is at the top of his game, a Wall Street hotshot. On the outside he has it all, money, his dream job, and women, lots of women. But there is a reason why they say not to judge a book by its cover, Ian is a lot more then the manhore they paint him out to be. And the last place he wants to be is under investigation by the SEC.
Lara is smart, strong, and a workaholic. She has placed her life on hold in order to obtain a position as an agent for the FBI. Making her own way and working for the SEC until she accomplishes the goals she has set for herself. But what happens when she finds the one person that may be worth losing everything she has worked so hard to obtain?
This was a battle between being professional and following a very intense attraction, Lara and Ian can’t fight the chemistry, but they each have something to lose. Ian needs to clear his name and Lara can’t lose focus of her job, she is there to investigate Ian and follow up on the accusations made against him. Except it’s not black and white, there are others involved, people who want to take Ian down. Will Lara do the right thing and risk losing her job for a man she is quickly falling in love with or will she turn her back on him to get closer to that FBI position?
This was a great introduction to what is already becoming an amazing series. Laura delivered a great read, one full of surprises, a little angst, a lot of hot moments, and witty banter. Not only did we get to meet Ian and Lara, but we were introduced to some of the characters that will be in the rest of the series. I can not wait!
As this was my first book by Lauren Layne, I went into Hot Asset with an open mind and came out absolutely adored this book. Lara McKenzie was assigned to investigate Ian Bradley for insider trading. Both weren’t expecting this investigation to take the turns that it did. Opposites attract even for hot Wall Street Playboys and sassy SEC Investigators.
Ian and Lara had so much sexually chemistry, when they FINALLY gave into it, perfection. The whole start to their relationship will have you laughing. Even the other characters will have you laughing and loving them as much as Ian and Lara.
Lauren Layne, you have made a new reader out of me; looking forward to the rest of this series!
Lauren Layne and her Wall Street series is one that kicks off with tons of foreplay that will make you say right now. We have two people who from the outside seem opposite but together they have something in common. Ian knows he’s hot and can have any woman yet Lara is one tough cookie. Throughout the book we see them arguing with each other and boy this cat and mouse game is HOT. Lauren Layne new series just made Wall Street sexy.
Ian is the man of Wall Street, he gets all the best accounts, makes all the money, and gets any woman he wants. That is, until he meets Lara. When he learns who she is and why she is at his office, he can’t believe what he is hearing. Ian has never cheated at anything in his life, so who would say he cheated at his job to make money?
Lara works for the SEC and she tracks down those that cheat and steal to make money on Wall Street. She knows that Ian must have done wrong. He is too cocky and too arrogant not to have. But as she gets to know him, when he cooperates, she sees the real Ian and she is beginning to like him.
Ian felt something towards Lara the first time he met her, and he doesn’t know how to handle it. He is, after all, a one date kind of man. But he wants so much more with Lara. Lara wants to finish this investigation and move on, she knows this is not going anywhere. It looks like someone might be trying to set Ian up, but who would do such a thing?
Can Lara move on without falling into Ian’s arms? Will Ian wait until she finishes her final letter to her boss, saying there is nothing here before he makes his move?
I liked this story from the beginning and didn’t want to put it down because I didn’t want to miss anything because I had to sleep. I loved the chemistry between Ian and Lara. If you are looking for a good story then this one is for you and I can’t wait for Matt’s story, Hard Sell, coming in the fall of 2018.
A cute book in which Ian and Lara start off in very adversarial positions and have to dance their way around their mutual attraction to each other.
Lara is with the SEC and can’t be seen as having any sort of partisan relationship with anyone she is investigating. And she is investigating Mr. Ian Bradley. Ian isn’t sure why he’s being singled out. He’s done nothing wrong but it feels personal, and the longer he’s around Ms. McKenzie the more the wants to get personal with her.
I enjoyed the book but I feel as though the relationship between Lara and her boss needed to be explored a little more to set up the ending just a bit better.
I just adore Lauren Layne and I have yet to read a book by her that didn’t impress me. I’m pretty sure at this point, Layne couldn’t write a book that I didn’t find myself intrigued after the first page. Surprisingly, I didn’t just like Hot Asset, I LOVED it. I am completely, one hundred percent smitten with not only Ian, one of the main characters, but all the Wolfes on Wall Street. Hot Asset (the 21 Wall Street series) by Lauren Layne may be my new favorite series by Layne. Honestly, I didn’t think the day would come because I’m rather partial to the Wedding Belles series, but here I am gushing over these Wall Street guys! I just could not put Hot Asset down and I was completely invested from start to finish. Also, who doesn’t appreciate Layne’s slow burning build-up with her characters? This book was the perfect blend of romance and steam! Plus, I really appreciated that Lara, one of the main characters, was a strong independent career woman! Now, after reading Hot Asset, I am beyond ready to read Matt’s story in book #2 and I am looking forward to reading the rest of these amazing Wall Street guys’ stories! 5 STARS for Lauren Layne’s Hot Asset (21 Wall Street series).
4.5 stars of sexy suitedness!
This is another really enjoyable read from Ms. Layne – an author on my absolute must read list, with very good reason.
I enjoy some intrigue and mystery with my romance, and this delivers it in spades. I loved finding out just what the issue was, and the resolution was super cool. Given this was delivered alongside a wonderfully sexy and chemistry driven romance, how could the book not be anything but wonderful?
There is always so much detail in Ms. Layne’s writing, but none of it is superfluous, ever. It always furthers my understanding of the people, the place, or the plot – and this time I got to learn how to mix a Negroni too! Thanks to a writing style which is a smooth as any cocktail and as enjoyable as the very best canapé, I could not stop reading until the very end… which was everything I could have wanted and more.
If you have not read a Lauren Layne book before, you are in for a treat, and have the joy of an extensive back list to devour. If you have, well rest assured this is as good as them all, if not, for me, slightly better – and wow, there will be a lot more fun to come, because Matt, Kennedy, Kate, and Sabrina all have some catching up to do with Ian and Lara!
Reviewers on the Wicked Reads Review Team were provided a free copy of Hot Asset (21 Wall Street #1) by Lauren Layne to read and review.
Ian is a ladies man. He flirts and they all fall over themselves to get to him. Unfortunately, Lara doesn’t even come close to falling for his one liners. Her lack of interest only makes him want to get in there more. Then he learns the woman he’s unsuccessfully flirting with is an SEC investigator and she’s here to find evidence that he is guilty of insider trading. What follows is a chemistry laden story of two people on opposite sides. I do enjoy an enemies to lovers trope.
I actually loved Ian, despite his previous manwhore ways. Once he saw Lara he was pulled to her and continued to want more although she wasn’t giving him anything but a hard time. It was endearing watching him fall and my heart hurt several times for him throughout the story. He has a past that leaves him feeling not worthy enough and unwanted.
Lara was totally career focused and I wasn’t sure how their relationship was going to end in a happy ever after. She was smart and snarky and a tad geeky. Everything I enjoy about a heroine. I wanted her to triumph but not at the cost of Ian’s freedom. Because, you know, I liked Ian. I liked Lara. I especially liked it when they finally were able to be together. Unfortunately, their coming together did not fix all of their problems.
This was such a well thought out, fast paced read with some fun and interesting secondary characters. It never bogged down and I was never tempted to skim. When this couple were free to give in to their desires the heat level was quite intense. The ending had many layers to it and I appreciated that this author didn’t take the easy way out. I’m especially excited to learn that there will be more in this series with Ian’s friends being the focal point. Altogether, this was a great read that quickly pulled me into the suit wearing world of Wall Street and I cannot wait for more!
Ian is 32 years old. He and his two best buddies are very rich & successful brokers at a NYC firm.
He’s had to work hard for every single thing he has. He didn’t grow up with a silver spoon – he was a foster kid – going from one home to the next.
But now he’s living the life. …. until she shows up. Lara. She’s the SEC agent sent to investigate him … Insider trading? He would never do that. He worked too hard for everything to lose it with stupid, criminal shit like that.
Who is trying to pin something on him???
And does Lara believe him???
Well, that was adorable. Funny and sparky and cute and exciting.
Ian is your typical NYC money business millionaire manwhore. Never sleeps twice with the same woman. But he’s also such a good guy in private. Giving money to charities and buying his foster dad a new TV every time he throws his beer at a sportsgame! He’s great with his friends. And Lara sees all that, but she also trusts her boss. And her boss is the one who will send a recommendation letter to the FBI – for her dream job. What to do?? Who is the bad guy here??
Very adorable Manhattan romance. Cute, funny, exciting, lots of sparks and foreplay fighting!
I really enjoyed reading it.
Can’t wait for the other 2 guys’ & girls’ books!
Favorite Quotes:
The weekday lunch hour on Wall Street is everything you’d expect—plenty of suits and martinis and pretension. Nobody bothers to look twice at a woman in a boring blouse and four-year-old stilettos bought at Nordstrom Rack.
Yes, men just love my combination of forthright and awkward.
“What the heck is day cleavage?” She holds up her thumb and forefinger to her cleavage as though she’s measuring something. “No more than a half inch or so, see?” “What’s night cleavage?” She widens the gap between her fingers. “An inch, at least.” I shake my head in wonderment. “It’s like you’re from a different planet.”
My Review:
I always enjoy Lauren Layne’s enticing stories, they beckon me. I adore her amusing and sharp wit but not as much as I love her endearing flawed yet vulnerable characters. In Hot Asset, the two main protagonists initially appeared to be complete opposites in every arena.
Ian was a wealthy playboy and self-made success story as through his relentless efforts and keen intelligence, this survivor of multiple negligent foster homes became a Yale graduate and had worked hard to earn his spot near the top of the food chain in his Wall Street firm. He was also a dirty talking sex machine who appeared to have a hard edge but was layers deep with a marshmallow center, although no one knew of his charitable efforts as he played nearly as hard as he worked and never bedded the same woman twice, “because I don’t have to.”
Lara was a tightly wound, honest, and hardworking government employee who followed the rules, yearned for career advancement and acceptance into the FBI, and had no social life. As the SEC agent that arrived at Ian’s office to personally investigate him, she was unimpressed with his slick approach. They were at odds yet seemed to enjoy bantering and antagonizing each other yet each also fought a building respect and attraction. Yet there was something just not right with the case and allegations against Ian.
I am excited with Ms. Layne’s new 21 Wall Street series, as this installment has started it off with the propulsion of a space rocket that was locked and loaded with a cast of quirky yet alluring characters. I doubt I could tire of them and am already greedy for the next volume.
Hot asset is sooo good. Ian Bradley known for being rich and making it known and for having a different women every night admits to being a dick. But losing his parents when young then being in foster care with parents who didn’t care and having nothing he made a name for himself. He worked hard and played even harder. It is what he hides behind for not feeling wanted except by one guy who never adopted him but took him and took care of him. Then Lara McKenzie shows up who can take everything he worked so hard to become and do all away. This could be her big break also to get into the FBI. She doesn’t fall at his feet like all the other women but she isn’t unaffected either. Lara is working hard to find the truth and Ian is fighting to clear his name. Both of their jobs on the line. Both tryin to fight the attraction.
Hot Asset is more than hot guys in suits. It’s the underdog story. Ian is the guy men want to be and ladies want to have…at least for the night. He’s charming, sexy, and WEARING a suit!!! He’s the guy everyone warns you about…but only because they don’t know him.
Ian is a surprise and the kind of guy you can’t help but want to hold, snuggle, and…(whoa! Edited to keep it PG. ) He may seem like an @ss but that’s only part of the picture…and boy is it pretty! (Men can be pretty!)
With a charming man, a warm fuzzy inducing back story, and friends like these, the only thing you are going to be asking for is…MORE!!
As the start of the series, Hot Asset is definitely a commodity. Grab it fast before Ian slips away. I am excited for the rest of the series. These guys have my attention and probably more of my heart than I want to admit.
