The tenth book in the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary’s series which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History. If you love Jasper Fforde, Ben Aaronovitch or Doctor Who, you won’t be able to resist Jodi Taylor.‘Jodi Taylor does it again. A brilliant yomp through history’ – Reader ReviewYou can’t change History. History doesn’t like it. There are … History. History doesn’t like it. There are always consequences.
Max is no stranger to taking matters into her own hands. Especially when she’s had A Brilliant Idea. Yes, it will mean breaking a few rules, but – as Max always says – they’re not her rules.
Seconded to the Time Police to join in the hunt for the renegade Clive Ronan, Max is a long way from St Mary’s. But life in the future does have its plus points – although not for long.
A problem with the Time Map reveals chaos in the 16th century and the wrong Tudor queen on the throne. History has gone rogue, there’s a St Mary’s team right in the firing line and Max must step up.
You know what they say. Hope for the best. But plan for the worst.

High octane adventures in little (time-) travelled history
When one of your favourite authors writes the tenth book in a series you’re hoping for the best and prepared for disappointment. This is a tour-de-force with all my favourite Jodi Taylor ingredients. The history, both real and alternative, is brought to life with panache, humour and solid research. Asides that mock the trendiness of certain periods and cultures trendy e.g. Ancient Egyptians over Kushites give the reader a wonderful sense of superiority – as you rush off to google ‘Kushites’.
Nobody puts you in a prehistoric swamp the way Jodi Taylor does. Thank you for that, Jodi. I needed several baths afterwards and kept checking the water for… things. I’m also lightly traumatised by – no, that would be a spoiler.
The switches between incredible (and I mean incredible) adventures and fully credible relationships is expertly done and you won’t forget the ways in which Max reaches out to her son, in a three steps forward/ two steps back tangential approach that those of us who’ve worked with disturbed youngsters know all too well.
The title is a typical Jodi Taylor tease. She wants you to hope for the best and prepare for the worst, knowing that she’s prepared to deliver either to her long-suffering characters, especially Max, Leo and Matthew. All I’m willing to say is that it’s a superb ending! If you haven’t picked up this series yet, why not? I envy you starting at Book 1 and I suggest you read every single one – this author does not churn books out to a series formula – she cares about each book and each character, and so did I. Highly recommended.
These are my favorite escapist reading. Love Jodi Taylor’s St Mary’s books!
Jody Taylor does it again! I loved this book as much as the others and left me wanting another to read right away!
This is an action packed installment in the St Mary’s series.
Love the series!
Wild ride filled with laughter and mystery!
Max is involved in a plan that is complex and confusing. Laughter is the norm, but hair raising chills keep things hopping.
Love this series!!!
I love this series!
Very slow start with this one. Actually kind of boring – then it took off big time. Like the others in the series, there was time-travel (don’t call it that), danger, and lots of laughs. The ending is TERIFFIC!
Out of the “box “theme, lots of humor. I enjoyed it.
Another fun book in a favorite series
This is the second book in the series and it is as entertaining as the first. Well written, fast paced and interesting from a historical perspective. its a fun read well worth the romp.
Entertaining in several fronts. Witty writing, complexity of plot, action packed, appealing characters. Logical time travel premises.
Wonderful book! so much detail but not overwhelming. Can’t wait for the next one.
How can I write a review when I am almost speechless? Utterly, thoroughly, completely gobsmacked?! Bravo, Jodi! I think this is your best yet!
Love this series!
I love this author! Every book from this series is a joy to read. The characters are querky and they suck you into they crazy lives.
Read the first book i know you will love it, the historical information is an added bonus.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this whole series
Another solid contribution.
Max is, shock, working with the Time Police and gets to hang out with Mathew a little.
Some finagling with history here with the alternate universe Nine Day Queen, Lady Jane Grey, rampaging with Protestant fire through 16th century England.
Cretaceous period, dodos, Egypt and bad guys don’t mix well.
Jodi Taylor’s Chronicles of St, Mary’s series has become my absolutely, all-time favorite series. I own ALL of the novels and short stories. I would even give up coffee, for tea, if Max and company would take me with them. Actually, they do. Every time I open one of the books, or fire up my Nook, my family has to say goodbye to me. They were actually relieved to see my despair over the fact that I had read all of them. I haven’t had the heart to tell them that I have already pre-ordered Doing Time, the first book of Ms. Taylor’s new series, The Time Police. YES, It is a spinoff of the St. Mary’s series. Hallelujah!!!! I can hardly wait for October 17, 2019.
