Everything a detective novel should be–gripping, clever, and filled with deep characters.Ninety-nine shovels of dirt on the grave, ninety-nine shovels of dirt… Kacy’s twin brother washes up from the icy depths of the Chicago River she’s positive she knows who did it. The same man who buried her alive two years earlier. A killer more ghost than man as no one had ever seen his face and lived to tell about it.
Kyle had been a druggie and small time thug. He’d taken something, and someone out there was desperate to get it back. Bodies were piling up and her adoptive parents were at the top of Kacy’s list of suspects. The killer wasn’t finished, and the only thing she knew for sure… he was coming for her.
A multilayered, fast-paced archaeological dig of a mystery.

This is the first book that I have read from Linda Prather. It certainly won’t be the last.
I very much enjoyed this roller-coaster ride. Kacy and Dave are expertly written, up there with the best US detective books.
I’m also looking forward to the next books in this series; and looking for other books by this author.
Interesting characters and partnership. The action and intrigue will keep you reading when you should be doing something else. I immediately bought book 2 and look forward to enjoying it as much as I did the 1st book.
Wow! What an amazing thriller this is, from the opening paragraph this book dragged me along until the very fast page.
Kacy Lang arrives at the scene of a murder to learn the victim is her twin brother who she has lost contact with over the years because of the difference paths they took.
Kacy is off the case, as she should be but she and her partner Dave Capello are mavericks and decide to do some unofficial digging into who wanted Kyle dead.
I loved the first book in this series by Linda, who is a super talented author. The characters are so different to any of the other characters she’s written but they work so well together.
I truly can’t wait to get the second book in this refreshingly new series in my grubby little hands.
Highly recommended to anyone who loves thrillers that are page turners.
In this start of a new crime fiction series, the reader is introduced to Detective Kacy Lang and her partner, Dave Capello. They are called out to investigate a body that was found in the Chicago River. Not so surprisingly, the body was that of her twin brother’s.
No, she’s not hardhearted, her brother got into drugs and crime years ago. She hasn’t seen or heard from here in several years. She has always known that she would have to arrest him or shoot him. What really upsets her is the fact that he was tortured before being killed.
But his isn’t he only body to be found. His girlfriend, his best friend have both been murdered, with their housing torn to shreds. Someone is looking for something … and they haven’t found whatever it is. Kacy and Dave have an idea that one of them will be next and the killing will continue until they get what they want.
This looks to be a promising series … with credible and likeable characters. Kacy and Dave have been partners for years … they are like a family unit. They can spar like siblings, but when it comes down to it, they have each others’ backs.
Kacy’s back story is quite interesting … having adoptive parents that seem to have no love for her and never knowing her birth parents have led to a trust issue. Kacy’s also been a survivor of a serial killer a couple of years ago and she’s worked very hard to get through that particular trauma in her life. She still has flashbacks from time to time and only her partner know that tidbit.
It’s well-written with lots of action and several twists and turns along the way. I look forward to reading the second in this series … DISHONORABLE DEATH.
