From the bestselling author of the “dazzling historical saga” (The Washington Post), Moloka’i, comes the irresistible story of a young immigrant bride in a ramshackle town that becomes a great modern city “In Korea in those days, newborn girls were not deemed important enough to be graced with formal names, but were instead given nicknames, which often reflected the parents’ feelings on the birth … often reflected the parents’ feelings on the birth of a daughter: I knew a girl named Anger, and another called Pity. As for me, my parents named me Regret.”
Honolulu is the rich, unforgettable story of a young “picture bride” who journeys to Hawai’i in 1914 in search of a better life.
Instead of the affluent young husband and chance at an education that she has been promised, she is quickly married off to a poor, embittered laborer who takes his frustrations out on his new wife. Renaming herself Jin, she makes her own way in this strange land, finding both opportunity and prejudice. With the help of three of her fellow picture brides, Jin prospers along with her adopted city, now growing from a small territorial capital into the great multicultural city it is today. But paradise has its dark side, whether it’s the daily struggle for survival in Honolulu’s tenements, or a crime that will become the most infamous in the islands’ history…
With its passionate knowledge of people and places in Hawai’i far off the tourist track, Honolulu is most of all the spellbinding tale of four women in a new world, united by dreams, disappointment, sacrifices, and friendship.

I loved reading this book. I didn’t want it to end. If you know a little history of the leper colony in Hawaii, you will enjoy this book so much more.
Having been an annual visiter to Honolulu, I was drawn to this title. “Honolulu” is a wonderful stand-alone read AND part of a trilogy of historical fiction. They interweave several generations of families who settle in the Hawaiian Islands beginning in the early 20th century to present day. I recommend “Honolulu” as well as the other two books, …
One of my favorite authors.
Loved it.
I’ve found a new author in Alan Brennert. After reading and enjoying Moloka’i, I checked this one out and found it compelling in a slow-burning way. I think Brennert is a great storyteller and I like his style of writing and connect with his main characters. Lots of history to learn about the Korean and Hawaiian cultures around and after the turn …
Oh how I love this author. I love everything he has written. This was the first I read. The story made me want to dive deeper into the world of picture brides. My heart was breaking at each chapter for Jun, Pearl and all of the other characters. Learning so much about the Big Island was a real page turner.
My daughter lives in Honolulu so I especially appreciated the historical perspective this novel provides. It includes strong character development and an engaging story line. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
i always find historical fact building interesting. But the story itself dragged a bit.
I love historical fiction. Am currently reading stories about Asia and the South Pacific. This was a good one!
Enjoyed it immensely. A great read, fact and fiction woven seemlessly.
Great prospective of life
I haven’t quite finished reading this yet, but I love this book. The characters are great and the story is fascinating although very sad at times. I can’t wait to see how it ends.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Not many people understand the history of the Molokai story. It is unbelieveable. Seeing the island many years ago it enhanses the history of the cultures of the Hawaiian people and their islands.
Very good book, and the other titles by this author.
Well written, interesting characters, learned new history I had not known about before reading this book
An excellent read and a snapshot of a time and culture.
I have a passion for history and this book followed a history stream I knew nothing about. Characters seemed real and some of their stories were adopted into this novel. I highly recommend this book
A great read about Hawaii
Very enjoyable
