Just how reliable are psychics – specifically psychics hired by your sister for wedding entertainment? When irrepressibly romantic Lucy Gray is ditched at said wedding by her date in front of her whole family, the promises of a psychic seem better than her pity-riddled reality. The psychic’s advice seems insightful: stop ignoring fate’s signs – fate will lead you to love. But when “fate” leads … when “fate” leads Lucy to London, she finds herself tangled in a web of lies. In a story about finding independence and taking chances, Lucy learns that leaving everything up to fate can be dangerous – and jeopardize her chances at happily ever after.

What a delightful romantic comedy. Lucy’s fake date dumps her at her sister’s wedding, so she decides to go to London on her sister’s second honeymoon that her sister neglected to cancel. This book offers romance, mystery and some hilarious characters to boot. This was a wonderful laugh out loud adventure, and I recommend it to all romantic comedy lovers.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review, thank you, Nicole.
When you live your whole life (so far) in a sheltered fashion, there might come a time when you do something crazy…like take your sister’s discarded honeymoon and break free from the parental chains. Ok, maybe you do some of this on a whim thanks to the advice of a psychic at your sister’s wedding, but something has to spur you into action!
I applauded Lucy for her decision to escape her home when a hotel in London calls to confirm her sister’s reservation. A reservation that wasn’t going to be used because her OCD sister booked two honeymoon options. Two! But what better time to put that passport to use than a Christmas getaway. Her friend Mary encourages her to go and even contacts a classmate of theirs to meet her at the airport and be a point of contact. It works out to both of their advantages since the hotel is for honeymooners only (and there is no Mr. with Lucy) and Cary’s roommates turn out to be his worst nightmare.
I applaud Lucy’s gumption to take herself on a tour of London and see the usual touristy sites plus so much more. She has been held back thanks to an overbearing mother and older brother. In fact, when she manages to “lose” her phone and disconnects from those ties is when she really blossoms. We are able to peek into the frantic thoughts of her family through blog entries. Apparently, the whole family can blog to let others know what is happening. I suppose that is easier than making a bunch of phone calls.
Lucy manages to keep Oliver, the nosy concierge, at bay regarding her “husband” and why she is doing so much on her own. But is he more than nosy? Could he be smitten with Lucy? Or is there something more “sinister” at play? The only way to find out is to read the book.
This book had me laughing at many turns and I had a hard time putting the book down. I wanted to know what secret Oliver was hiding, who the Honeymooners were, and would Lucy’s family learn to take a step back and let her live her life. There are a few heart-stopping moments near the end but nothing too scary. The story is also about finding your own path and looking out for yourself because your family may not know what is best for you despite their best intentions.
As a child of the 80s, I had to share this line with you…I didn’t mark more for some reason, I think I was enjoying the book too much.
“I’m an 80s themed mess. My hair is crimped. Crimped. I look like a bottle of grape soda in my purple, polka-dotted dress complete with shoulder pads.”
We give this book 5 paws up.
The honeymoon thief…
Lucy is always the reliable one. The ‘take one for the team’ one. The always thinking of everyone else over herself one. The book opens at Lucy’s sister’s crazy 80s themed wedding where maid of honor Lucy is putting out fires left and right – no thanks to a worthless wedding planner. One big problem, the psychic (yes, psychic) booked for the reception is a no-show and she is scrambling for a replacement. That new psychic tells Lucy that she is just waiting for her life to begin and she should stop ignoring the signs out there for her.
The first sign she chooses not to ignore is an answering machine message at her sister’s apartment that is calling to confirm reservations at a London hotel that her sister forgot to cancel. (Her backup honeymoon plan). Lucy does the craziest thing she’s ever done by confirming the reservation and takes off to London – impersonating her sister as the newlywed – and uses the vacation for herself. Now she has to pretend she is on her honeymoon (even though she’s alone) at an exclusive honeymooners only hotel and the crazy and funny situations pop up everywhere. Lucy, never having traveled anywhere, being a terrible liar and a bit naive is proving to be interesting obstacles to becoming the “new” Lucy.
This had me hooked from the beginning and I couldn’t put it down! Really funny and really cute read!
(I received a complimentary copy of this book from Hidden Gems.)
London? I’m in! From the title I thought of a jilted bride drowning in tears in the honeymoon suite… not much fun. But it’s not that at all, and it IS fun! I mean, it’s London! A couple of suspend-your-disbelief plot points, but this is fiction after all. Some fun twists and turns, good character development, nice writing. AND a romance you’re not sure will happen.
A really fun, easy read.
After a psychic tells her to follow fate and it’ll lead her to love, Lucy Gray decides to do just that – shocking her family and sending the family blog into overdrive, she, on the spur of the moment, decides to use her sister’s second, unused honeymoon.
So follows a hilarious adventure in London (and a few nights in Paris). I kind of figured out what was going to happen in the end when she was reading the newspaper on the Chunnel back to London, but never expected how the end happened. PS if you are very scared of heights you may need to speed-read or skip some parts of the New Years Eve drama.
A delightful addition was the blogposts the Gray family make on their family blog – you get a real feel on each character’s unique personalities.
Honeymoon Alone by Nicole Macaulay a five-star read that won’t leave you feeling alone. This was my first novel by this author, but it won’t be the last, as it started a little slowly, but honestly once it picked up it didn’t let up and it whisked me away. This was sweet and romantic and had a great storyline of fate and drama, but there is also another story flowing just beneath the surface and that kept me guessing all the way through, will you be like several of the characters in this story and be motivated by her international jaunt to be more true to yourself? Its motivated me to book a trip for when this lockdown is over as I cant wait to see Green Park again, and have a wander around one of my favourite places in London, it was so nice to see it mentioned. A simply wonderful story that I enjoyed alone, but I must admit I don’t think I would be as Brave as the wonderful Lucy.
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of Honeymoon Alone!
Lucy gray has felt she has always been boring so when an opportunity to branch out she takes it no second thought. ( well maybe a little)
While trying to prove herself Lucy gets caught up in lies, love, and maybe even murder.
Absolutely loved this sweet romance about trying to find yourself and along the way finding love. Honeymoon alone proves when your not trying to find love it comes knocking at your door.
When life hands you a sign, you take it…right? Well, for Lucy she certainly does! A chance meeting with a psychic at her sister’s wedding sends her into a tizzy wondering if she should take it seriously or not. This leads to a chance phone call with a confirmation for her OCD sisters booked the honeymoon. The only problem is, it should have been canceled and Lucy is left with a dilemma. Reflecting on what the psychic says, she runs with it. she’s the one nobody ever expects to do anything out of the norm, always playing by the book. One long plane ride later, Lucy begins the adventure of a lifetime.
I laughed so many times at her witty moments, hijinks, and just the peculiar situations she would get herself into! I loved that she reconnected with an old acquaintance, met some new and interesting (if not nosey) characters along the way and learned something more about herself. She could be a risk-taker within reason, living her life with more of an open mind and heart. What she doesn’t expect is to stumble across a crime spree, make a love connection for her friend and one for herself. This is a laugh out loud romantic comedy that will have you smiling all the way through. I really enjoyed it quite a bit.
