Virgil Flowers investigates a miracle–and a murder–in the wickedly entertaining new thriller from the master of “pure reading pleasure” (Booklist)Pinion, Minnesota: a metropolis of all of seven hundred souls, for which the word “moribund” might have been invented. Nothing ever happened there and nothing ever would–until the mayor of sorts (campaign slogan: “I’ll Do What I Can”) and a buddy … slogan: “I’ll Do What I Can”) and a buddy come up with a scheme to put Pinion on the map. They’d heard of a place where a floating image of the Virgin Mary had turned the whole town into a shrine, attracting thousands of pilgrims. And all those pilgrims needed food, shelter, all kinds of crazy things, right? They’d all get rich! What could go wrong?
When the dead body shows up, they find out, and that’s only the beginning of their troubles–and Virgil Flowers’–as they are all about to discover all too soon.

Always like Virgil Flowers. This one was slower getting going than the others, still enjoyable reading
Always a good read this was a little lost in the plot
Some well-meaning citizens of a dying small Minnesota town attempt to revive their hometown, but as their plan begins to work, people inexplicably are being shot. In his effort to solve the crimes, Virgil Flowers encounters a variety of interesting character, including a few would-be Nazis. An interesting read.
Love these characters….never disappoints
John Sandford never disappoints.
Oh how I love Virgil Flowers!! This case is another win and amazing story in this series. I can’t wait to see what craziness he gets up to next!!
John Sandford is an author whose books are as good today as they were twenty years ago when a friend recommended the first Lucas Davenport novel, “Rules of Prey.” Holy Ghost is a spin-off series featuring an investigator in rural, southern Minnesota. Virgil Flowers’ latest adventure brings him to a small town cashing in on a miracle. Great characters, witty dialogue, and, as always, an ending that I didn’t see coming.
While I have enjoyed all of the Virgil Flowers novels, this one left me feeling a little disappointed. There was a least moderately unbelievable detail surrounding the murders – Virgil could not figure why no one heard it.
The story itself just didn’t have enough “drive” to it.
All the above being said, I read the book in two days. And I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the Virgil Flowers series. However, I would rate it as the lowest of said series.
Not up to the usual quality of Mr. Sandford. The writing was good but the plot and characters were too many and too shallow. In spite of that, Virgil is an enjoyable character that was waisted on what was, at times, a confusing plot.
Love Virgil Flowers, he is my hero, lol
John Sandford never fails to please. His Prey series with Lucas Davenport is one of my favorite series. An easy read.
Sandford is one of my favorite authors and his Virgil Flowers books are m favorites. Holy Ghost comes through: an action packed, entertaining page turner. Loved it.
Not one of John Sandford’s better efforts – it was good, but not as consistently gripping as some of his better books.
Absolutely good. Have read entire series so far and my favorite book of the series so far. Virgil keeps on entertaining!
I love the character, Virgil Flowers, and Sandford’s style. This was a good but not a great read. Plot was a little far out.
Typical sanford
This newest in the series is also among the best. You will enjoy the evolution of the characters more if you read them in the order of publication, but they also stand on their own.
Another great story about the effin’ Flowers.
John Sanford is a Genius at this type of page turner. Who does not like Virgil Flowers, he is a hoot. I own every book Mr. Sanford has ever written. He is in my top 10 of favorite authors. The ending is a hoot and a half………..
Sanford is great. Flowers is great, butter knife, pot pies and all.
