This picks up right—and I mean right—where Book 1 left off. Book 1 ended on a cliffie so I’m all for this, but I definitely recommend reading them in order.
The editing is on point, the formatting is amazing, old photos, old-timey chapter breaks and all. I don’t want to give away anything that could be a spoiler so I’ll keep this fairly brief.
The book is packed with action, unlike Book 1 which took awhile to get going. You’ll likely cruise through this one much more quickly and you will need Book 3, Library of Souls as this one also ends on a cliff hanger.
With this installment we get even more amazing characters, some of which are animals. Probably be prepared though, for some extreme feels.
Amazing read.

What can I say?? This book was wonderful, unexpected and magical…
Jacob and the peculiar children are risking a lot in order to save Miss Peregrine, and while they venture into the unknown inside different loops they meet new and incredible peculiar animals and peculiar people.
Jacob is learning to use his gifts and in the end… There’s a cliffhanger, the next book is something I have to read as soon as I can….
This is a series I recommend if you’re looking for action and adventure.
The second in the trilogy by Ransom Riggs. This explained more of the peculiar’s world. It was easy to enter a loop and believe I was really at “Devil’s Due”. The story between Emma and Jacob only gets more interesting. I found that Jacob was much more important than in the first book. Cannot wait to read the last book!
I have been enjoying this series so much more than I expected. I find the overall story of the peculiar world inventive and fascinating. And in this book, what was set up in the first one really came alive. Rather than being completely lost and trying to understand, Jacob is…well, he’s still a bit confused, but there’s a lot to learn about, after all. As he begins to use his peculiarity with purpose, though, he gets to more involved in the mission. The other children have more of a chance to shine as well, both in personality and in ability. Though none of them is explored particularly deeply, with 10 characters going through most of the book together, I’m not very surprised or bothered.
I am fascinated by this story that is the ultimate example of using visual prompts to come up with ideas for a story. It’s a common exercise for aspiring writers, especially when they’re trying to come up with something to write about, and Ransom Riggs shows how well it can turn out. I still think he might over-describe the pictures sometimes, which makes those moments in the story feel a little forced, but I liked that he got away from every picture being an actual photo the characters looked at in the story, and many were just used to show us an illustration of a scene or a character.
The plot was definitely the highlight for me, as well as the world-building. I still think the actual writing could be better. I also don’t understand why just about every adult they run into immediately treats them with anger and hatred. There’s a scene at a train station that just seemed ridiculously unlikely to me. And I really could not care less about the relationship between Jacob and Emma—partly because she’s actually a lot older than him, even if she does look like a teenager, and partly because she was in love with Jacob’s grandfather. Both of these things just make it weird, in my opinion.
This book is full of “one step forward, two steps back,” to the point where it feels like the characters (and, by extension, we the readers) will never be able to stop and catch their breath or have good news that doesn’t turn bad. But then I got to the end, and wow! Though I’m usually not a fan of cliffhangers at the ends of books, I’m totally okay with this one! (Granted, it helps that I don’t have to wait for the next book to come out.) For now, though, I’ll stick with the recommendation I made for the first book: If you’re thinking of reading this series because you’re looking for a creepy story to go along with the creepy pictures, you may be disappointed. If you’re looking for an interesting speculative fiction world with kids with super-hero-type powers that first have to save themselves, and then quite possibly the world, this might be worth reading.
Really remarkable continuation of the book series
Read 1.14.2016
Hollow City picks up almost immediately after the events of the first book. This book has some pretty big differences from the first, as well. The story is much darker than the previous book and the children find themselves in far more dangerous situations. It also explains a lot about the war with the White’s and Hollows. The ending to this book was incredibly surprising, much like the first book, or maybe, even more so.
I will admit that some may find the situations the children find themselves in a bit too fantastical but for me, this only made me enjoy the book more. It gave the children and their journey a somewhat fairy tale-esque feel to it which I enjoyed very much. Some events that happened in this book made me go wide-eyed with surprise and often wondered how they’d get out of this mess. It also highlighted just how brutal the White’s really are, which made them even scarier/creepier than in the first book as well.
While I can’t guarantee that you’ll enjoy this book as much as I did, I would still recommend giving it a shot, nonetheless.
Ransom Riggs continues the story of Peculiars in and entertaining and original fashion. Love the old photos that are incorporated into the fabric of the characters.
Great series
Loved the first book and the second book is even better! I love the continuation of the story and characters!
Love reading the series.
I still have mixed feelings about the first novel of this series, but I think that comes down to having watched the film before reading the book… Although saying that I really enjoyed this one, even though I had to persuade my self to start the ball rolling (so to say), I did get sucked in eventually. One of my favourite parts was when they ventured into another time loop! I won’t say any more, because that would lead to spoilers! My only disappointment was the abrupt ending, luckily I already have the third book, which will be started directly after this review.
Hollow City by Ransom Riggs is the second book in the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series. This book picks up where the last book leaves off.
I absolutely love this series. It’s whimsical and fun. The characters are so unique. The author creates a fantastic world, and the use of old pictures only seals the deal and makes this story so believable.
If u decide to watch the movie i would read the books first there nothing a like
Book 2 didn’t disappoint. The twists and turns this story took! I really can’t wait to read the next book!
Loved the series!
2nd book in the trilogy – beautifully written, w/great characters and incredible illustrations – and an extraordinarily wonderful fantasy world developed within the very real world history.
Not as good as the first one,
Crazy good book and really cool pictures!!
