This winner of the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award features Stanley Yelnats, a kid who is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the warden makes the boys “build character” by spending all day, … day, every day, digging holes five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake: the warden is looking for something. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption. From the Paperback edition.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I am glad my brother recommended it to me.
It may be a surprise but this is my first time reading this book. I loved the movie growing up but never actually picked up the book. Since I saw it was an option for a Romanceopoly prompt this year I decided it was time to remedy that.

A definite worthwhile read.
After recently rereading this wonderful, timeless story, I am still in awe of Sachar’s ability to seamlessly blend the different timelines within “Holes” and create a memorable and fun tale. I honestly think I have read this book a dozen times (especially as a former teacher), and fully expect to read it a dozen more times as my kids grow up!— …
I read Holes more than 5 times. Well worth the read. Great Book.
Best book ever
Great book and a wonderful book-to-screen adaptation.
I always love the movie as a kid and I definitely don’t regret reading the book. It’s one of the closest from page to film matchups I’ve ever seen. Definitely worth a read for anyone who had this be part of their childhood, although anyone interested should give it a chance.
I think this is definitely a book for 6th grade and over.
Amazing
It was really good and there are lots of twists and turns along the way.
I loved this book. Felt so sorry for poor Stanley but couldn’t stop reading about him. He’s infuriating and adorable at the same time. Great story.
