This winner of the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award features Stanley Yelnats, a kid who is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the warden makes the boys “build character” by spending all day, … day, every day, digging holes five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake: the warden is looking for something. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption. From the Paperback edition.

One of my favorite books for middle level learners of all times. There are two main stories going on simultaneously. Everything is important, but accessible. Love this book.
I have read this book in my classroom; children pay attention to this one! It’s a good life-lessons book for children.
Great book and story was very catchy. I was amazed at what the boys went through during their time there. Good ending.
whis is the best book ive ever read js
The text is sparkling in its clarity. A young offender is sent to boot camp for a crime he didn’t commit and forms enduring friendships with other inmates despite the brutality and stupidity of the prison regime. Suitable for tens and over, but would appeal to any age. It’s a gem of a book.
Will keep you guessing until the end
An engaging and cleverly written story with an endearing main character thrust into horrible circumstances seemingly beyond his control. A heart warming and satisfying read.
A must read for everyone!
