So…. I like book two a little bit more! It was a quick read and I read it in one sitting. Interesting characters and story. I read an advanced copy of this book and this is my unbiased review!
This seems to be the last in the two book series, and if so Sebastian and Julian seem to have an HFN not a full-on HEA. Here, the threats are still out there but Sebastian’s desire to protect Julian seems to outweigh any advice he receives about being totally honest with Julian and I found that frustrating. These two could have been rock solid if there had been total honesty.
This is book 2 in a series and picks up right where the first one left off. (Yes, they need to be read in order.) Julian and Sebastian are living together and raising Nikolai, one of the children rescued from Julian’s old coven. Although the queen is dead, other coven members escaped, and the danger is not over. Sebastian is haunted by loss in his past as he strives to keep Julian and Nikolai safe. His solution is to keep Julian in the dark. What he doesn’t know can’t hurt him, right? (That never ends well.) Will Sebastian realize he and Julian need to work as a team to overcome the danger and secure their future? Still thin on world-building, but with an intriguing plotline, this is another short, quick read with a HFN ending and a bit of a twist/surprise for Julian.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
Julian and Sebastian are back and trouble is brewing immediately. This book follows on from book 1 the writing, character development, pacing and action are on the same level for me as they were then. Julian and Sebastian are on the hunt for the members of the Queen’s coven that escaped and to free those that are still held captive. This is a decent second book that ends in a HFN and a small cliffhanger, I do believe that there is a third book out soon so waiting for it will not be long. This is another quick-ish read, it’s enjoyable enough.

So this is the continuing story of Julian and Sebastian. They are on the hunt for Caesar and the rest of the Queen’s coven that escaped. Someone close to Sebastian loses his life in this hunt and this gives Julian the idea to find and stop Caesar from his course to kill them. Julian has moved in with Sebastian and they are raising Nikolai as their own.
This is another really short story. The way the vamp counsel takes over and doesn’t let Sebastian and Julian help until someone close dies is ridiculous. Sebastian’s father treats him like an untrained kid and he then does the same thing to Julian. There’s nothing in this book that made the story line worth reading IMO except capturing Caesar. The author’s writing is juvenile and the composition of writing was not up to par.
There were some plot holes in the first book, Hanging In The Balance, that I had hoped would be answered in the following book, Holding On To the Past. Instead, I had more questions and confusions.. particularly, it was said that these vampires can only have that One. So Nona had said Julian was that one so how did Caesar become that one? There were other plot holes as well. But this one bothered me the most.
I still enjoyed the love between Julian and Sebastian. And the sex scenes were steamy.
