A town in the thrall of evil. A summons that can’t be ignored. The SCU returns in a nail-biting novel from New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper. The Chosen have been warned. Powerful psychics across the globe have gotten the same eerie and insistent message: Go to Prosperity. Because in this small North Carolina mountain town, madness has taken hold…Trapped in a nightmare they can’t … hold…
Trapped in a nightmare they can’t escape, the residents of Prosperity are killing one another, waking up with no memory of the monstrous acts they’ve committed–or the reasons why. Chief Deputy Katie Cole knows that whatever evil is afoot is beyond her expertise, and beyond the understanding of Sheriff Jackson Archer. They need help.
The Special Crimes Unit is called in for its specific brand of investigation, to aid the Chosen as well as the once-peaceful mountain town. It will take all the agents’ training, all their experience, and every extra sense they can call on to get to the bottom of things in Prosperity. One of my favorite authors
I love Kay Hooper’s novels. They always grab you from the beginning and keep you interested til the end
I always love the Bishop Series books – I have a hard time putting them down when I am so close to the ends – Very entertaining and thrilling to meet more characters and see how they interact with the energy villains.
Psychics all over the country are alerted to a terrible event about to happen in Prosperity , NC. Six of them are summoned, ones who have kept to themselves even though they have been contacted and helped by Bishop’s Special Crimes Unit. SCU agents Hollis Templeton, Reese DeMarco and Galen are sent to coordinate and lead the untried pscyhics. They find an energy dome over Prosperity’s valley and three horrific murders that were done by trusted and dependable citizens. There is a race against time to prevent this evil from escaping the valley and contaminating everything in its path.
Kay Hooper’s Bishop SCU series is addictive.
I love, love, LOVE the Bishop/SCU books. The characters are so familiar to me, it feels like coming home each time I start a new story.
I found HOLD BACK THE DARK to be just as good as the previous installments, with one exception: the ending felt rushed. Once the team found the cave, it seemed like everything moved very quickly and then -boom- the story was over. What happened to the people who were forced by the energy to do horrible things? Does the woman who killed her family ever come out of the coma, horrified at what she’s done? Does the real estate agent who killed his clients ever “snap out of it?” In addition, what about the team members who were not SCU or Haven? Do any of them decide to finally join?
While I was completely engrossed in the story from the very first page, I do wish the ending had been fleshed out a bit more. Won’t stop me from continuing the series, though!
I usually love this series, but I was left disappointed in this one. It really didn’t grab me and the characters just coasted along for most of the book. The story fizzled out and I was left wondering what happened to some people and events. Hopefully the next one will be better.
It was a good scary book to read on Halloween. I love these types of books from Kay Hooper. Hold Back the Dark was another SCU book series. I enjoy reading some paranormal genre. This was scary, hold on to your husband scary, and cover your eyes scary but you can’t because you need to read what’s happening nexrt. The deputy chief Kate Cole who had a case that she could tell was not a normal situation, so she told Sheriff Archer they need to call in FBI unit that deals with unexplainable paranormal situations. So they called in SCU Chief Noah Bishop the head of the SCU FBI unit. He sent several of is agents to Prosperity, a small in town in NC, was having weird unexplained deaths. I can’t wait until the next one in the series.
One of my most favorite authors. So hard to find anyone who writes like this. Romance, characters that grow with every book in the series, psychic but believable and each character having unique and even developing more gifts over time. Always after a killer which I love the edge of your seat, have to keep turning pages , books. Also always a strong woman character who can kick butt but also have a little romance but not to much.
Kay Hooper has been my favorite authors for more years than either of us would care to say. She writes romantic suspense with a team of characters with ESP capabilities. Some know things by touch, dreams, visions, just know something. They fight evil and some fall in love in the process. This book was a little slower than any other book I’ve read by Kay but she’s still one of the best suspense authors out there. Highly recommend anything by this terrific author. She will keep you turning pages.
Great end to the series. Can not wait to start the next series
I was so disappointed. The premise held much promise, but the execution was cut horrendously short. First you have the calling out to many psychics, healers, etc. Then you get them all to the town where the evil is calling out. And then in about 10 pages the book is over.
I could not wait to read this next installment of the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series but this one fell short. Some of the members are called psychically to the town of Prosperity. The oddity is some receive the message while others received nothing which raises a red flag for the Bishops (Noah-Unit Chief and his wife Miranda). Meanwhile Prosperity’s Sheriff Archer is trying to hold it together after his response to the second killing when his Chief Deputy Katie Cole convinces him to call in a special FBI team. Once the unit meets in Prosperity more things happen and they all work together to figure out just what is happening to the town residents and also their own team. The killings are graphically descriptive while the storyline seemed contrived at points which took away from the normal flow I have experienced in past books in the series. Though, you meet new characters and see how they work with the returning characters this story missed the mark for me.
Bishop & crew are always great!
Bishop’s team of psychics is back and this time they have been summoned along with some all new psychics and there are up against an evil that is pushing for a blood bath in this chilling paranormal suspense that had the hair on the back of my neck standing up on end.
Kay Hooper’s suspenseful world of psychics is full of wonderful characters that are strong and captivating, always adding lots of depth to each and every case as they try to solve cases using their psychic abilities and at least some of the time they become targets because of those abilities as well. Every case is different and each have their own unique elements and the author makes it all seem very plausible and real that I can’t help but get chills just thinking about.
Hold Back the Dark is the newest thrilling read in the series and I was completely enthralled and unable to put the book down until I had read every last detail. The suspense and anticipation kept building throughout and there was no way to predict just what the evil might make happen next which of course means that there is never a dull moment and to make this book even more interesting, the author introduces some new psychics that have trouble controlling their gifts / curses. There is not really a new romance in this book but there are couples that have hooked up in previous books involved in the case so you still get a bit of romance throughout the story.
I can never get enough of this series, so of course I can’t wait to read the next one which I think will be the third book in the Bishop Files series and it will be out in October.
