It’s the most wonderful time of the year, Hogswatchnight, when the Hogfather himself dons his red suit and climbs in his sleigh pulled by—of course—eight hogs, to shower gifts across Discworld. But when the fat man goes missing, someone has to sit in. It’s up to Death to take up the reigns—otherwise the sun won’t shine tomorrow . . . or ever again.Who would want to harm Discworld’s most beloved … beloved icon? Very few things are held sacred in this twisted, corrupt, heartless—and oddly familiar—universe, but the Hogfather is one of them. Yet here it is, Hogswatchnight, that most joyous and acquisitive of times, and the jolly, old, red-suited gift-giver has vanished without a trace. And there’s something shady going on involving an uncommonly psychotic member of the Assassins’ Guild and certain representatives of Ankh-Morpork’s rather extensive criminal element. Suddenly Discworld’s entire myth system is unraveling at an alarming rate. Drastic measures must be taken, which is why Death himself is taking up the reins of the fat man’s vacated sleigh . . . which, in turn, has Death’s level-headed granddaughter, Susan, racing to unravel the nasty, humbuggian mess before the holiday season goes straight to hell and takes everyone along with it.

I love rereading this book during the holiday season! It’s a part of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series with a nice twist on our view of Santa Claus and Christmas. It can be a little confusing, at first, especially if u haven’t read any of these books before, but I don’t think there is suppose to be a lot of sense in his novels anyway. So, you’re …
A entirely unique take on the holiday season. Set in the Discworld, this holiday themed story turns some preconceptions on their heads while keeping the overall sentiments of Christmas the same. A world where Death himself is a good guy, and Tea Time is deadly, and magic is so very real.
If you haven’t taken a stroll through Terry Pratchetts’ …
One for the holidays!
Can I give a book more than five stars? Is that possible? Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books are simple perfection; funny, wise and always welcome. Each book stands alone, but also continues the long and crazy history of the Discworld and it’s people. That Pratchett is no longer with us is one of the great tragedies of the 21st century. If you’ve …
Solid, funny Pratchett book from the Discworld series; enjoyable but not one of his best.
Terry Pratchett never disappoints. His comments about Love and Justice at the end of the story are amazing. His character, Susan, is the perfect anti Mary Poppins.
The Hogfather, by Terry Pratchett, blew my mind! Who is able to deliver all the childrens’ gifts on Hogswatch Eve when the Santa-ish character is unavailable? Why Death of course. What would one name the God of Hangovers?
The Oh-God! And so it goes in The Hogfather. The book was truly my gateway drug into Pratchett’s Discworld series. The …
This is my unconventional Christmas read every year. Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels are not only funny, but unexpectedly deep in ways you don’t realize until you’re into them.
On the Discworld, Death is a person, an anthropomorphic personification of the idea of death, and he’s gradually become attached to humanity. So when the Hogfather …
After many years, I am rereading The Discworld novels and am having as much fun as the first time. Terry Pratchett’s joyous playfulness with the English language and uproarious societal parody doesn’t get stale.
Honestly, I read this every holiday season. Susan and Death are two of my favorite characters in the Discworld universe.
This is my favorite Terry Pratchett book. It is a great book to introduce someone to his books and the world of Discworld. Imagine The Grim Reaper as Santa Claus when Santa goes missing and you have the basis for this book. Fun read that has great re-read value.
One of his best books
The Hogfather has vanished – so who will deliver presents to children on this most special night? When Death steps in, events spiral out of control, and only Susan Sto-Helit can save the day. This hilarious recounting of the disappearance of a Santa-like figure takes the reader into unexpectedly enchanting territory. Apart from a wonderful read, …
This is one of the funniest – and insightful – fantasy books I’ve ever read and I re-read it once a year without fail.
Fans of Terry will obviously know why there is so much to love about his books but here’s the premise if you’re new to ‘Hogfather’: Death himself must fill in for Santa Claus, and it’s at least as funny as it sounds 😀
Everyone has some sort of holiday tradition. Some people sing carols, some bake cookies, some make an annual visit to relatives rarely seen. I read Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather.
Death is one of my favourite Discworld characters and I absolutely love the juxtaposition of him in a holiday setting. “It’s supposed to jolly, with mistletoe and holly… …
This is my go-to Christmas book (and also the movie).
