It turns out a sixteen-year-old being one of the most powerful witches on Earth puts people on edge… You cast one dubious spell and everything goes to shit.Namely, the Amazons, the most powerful coven of witches, have come to Ember Academy to investigate everything that happened on Halloween. And my role in it.They know that I’m powerful, but I’m not sure what they would do if they knew why, so … but I’m not sure what they would do if they knew why, so I’m keeping quiet.
Of course, that means that they don’t trust me, so they’re forcing me through their trials.
If I pass, I’ll be an Amazon, and they’ll trust me with my powers and secrets.
If I don’t… Well, the fact that no one’s being explicit about that tells me that I don’t want to know.
My survival depends on passing these trials, but they’re meant to determine the best of the best, and I’ve known about magic for less than two months…

The Amazons are coming to Ember Academy to test Amelia and determine if she is safe to live or not.
Amelia is still reeling from Ms. Maltere’s betrayal. Her protector is in coma. Natalie has recovered. Unfortunately, Amelia is still wearing the scars from the curse that backfired on her saving her mother. Now it is time to confess to her friends what she has done before they hear it from anyone else.
There are severe repercussions for the Academy due to Amelia’s actions and one of them is a visit from the Amazons. They will determine whether the school will stay open. They are also there to test Amelia as she should not have so much power.
Amelia now has to hide who she is while being tested by people who may or may not want her dead. Then there are other repercussions from the curse that she cannot tell her friends about. While other curses change, some remain the same.
Amelia gains an enemy, yet gains another ally. This time she is battling the Amazons and she needs all of the help she can get.
Once again L.C. Mawson sucks me into the life at Ember Academy for Young Witches in the History of Magic (B08289VQPH, 2020). I love this series. It has a little bit of everything and Mawson balances it flawlessly. There is action, much like Tomb Raider. There is drama and sadly family drama too. There is romance. There is magic which is pretty cool.
There are a lot of real-life issues that we all deal with or have dealt with in life. There is one character I want to throat-punch as does I think every other character in the group of friends. This book explains a lot of how the magic world split as just as we are split in this world, bigotry plays a big part in their world too.
Amelia is the kick-butt friend you want on your side. She may still be finding her way, but she sticks. I cannot wait to see what is coming next because even Esme seemed worried. (gives me chills- yay!)
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
History of Magic (Ember Academy for Young Witches, #2), my seventh enjoyable read from author L.C. Mawson. I own several of her books but hadn’t read one since January. An intricately and tightly woven story-line made for a page-turning read. Better yet as this is the second in a new series. I look forward to Advanced Healing Spells (Ember Academy for Young Witches #3). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
History of Magic is the second book in the Ember Academy for Young Witches and it’s even better than the first book. After Amy assists one of her teachers to try and break a very powerful curse, hoping to learn how to break the curse that had been placed on her mother, the Amazons come to the school to test her abilities. The story in this book is more action packed, interesting and exciting and the characters, especially Amy’s new friends develop more abilities and spells as they help her to stop the Amazons from finding out how powerful she really is. I voluntarily reviewed this book and I believe that teens and adults will really enjoy this series.
History of Magic is Book 2 in L C Mawson’s wonderful new Ember Academy for Young Witches series, that begins with the arrival of the ruling coven, the Amazons. They’ve come to the Hogwarts-like Ember Academy to put Amelia on trial, for having magic that she may not be able to control,or conceal from humans. Amelia has also been linked psychically to Maria Brown, whom the Amazons see as a rogue and enemy witch. She masqueraded as a teacher to mentor Amelia and now calls to Amelia in her dreams. Because of their closeness to Amelia, her friends – Charlotte (a Seer/witch),Natalie (half witch, half vampire), Lena (witch) and Amelia’s girlfriend Willow,(an Elf) are also being forced to take part in the trials. Luckily Amelia’s Aunt is a teacher at the Academy, able to keep an eye on matters which is a good thing, considering all the scrapes, situations and occasionally shocking events these magically endowed young women seem to get into, while enjoying each others’ company and learning the ropes, magically speaking.
Presumably aimed at YA readership, but I’d say not for under 15s due to the foul language at times and the fact that the sexual orientation of several of the MCs is clearly detailed. This is not to detract from the well-written and beautifully crafted storyline and characters that you feel you’ve known a lot longer than through just one previous book, in L.C.Mawson’s wonderful new Ember Academy for Young Witches series.
Why not join in the adventures, enjoy learning about the invisible magical world around us and the inhabitants who may live down your way? – it’s a great story!
This a fantastic series I love how the Author keeps me intrigued from the first page to the last. Its lots of twists and turns. And the world building and Character building is also greart. The Author has brought a fantastic story to fruition. I definitely recommend

Is the Amazons’ test of magic in the case of Amelia a fair trial, or the embodiment of an oxymoron? Apparently things were rigged to make the trial lethal.
A split between older and younger witches among the Amazons exposes the magical and mundane worlds to potentially great and disastrous harm.
A favorite moment of mine is when Amelia reflects that she wishes the adults in the room would get past their personal issues and try to help her survive her trials and keep them from harm.
More challenges lie ahead with the arrival of the Slayers at the academy.

This series keeps getting better and better!
“History of Magic” is an amazing paranormal tale with the continuing storyline for the “Ember Academy for Young Witches” series and is well-written with perfectly crafted characters that flow from book to book. This series has action, magic, romance, vivid scenes, and exciting main characters. I love and highly recommend this series.

Great reading. Amelia (Amy, Lia) does a fantastic job of working through the bigotry of her world. She stands up to bullies and does her best to move forward with integrity. I found the ending a bit hard to take but I suspect it is the setup for the continuing story.
I received a copy of this book as a gift. This is my honest review.
ONE FREAKING FANTASTIC JOURNEY!!!
Splendid! Mawson cracks the whip, leading the charge, winning the skirmish and seizing the reigns, throwing this baby into a tailspin with a life altering, mind-blowing culmination. A churning vortex of vexing contingencies and inexplicable events, thrusts those churning emotions into play front and center. Add secrets, distress and turmoil along with unintentional situations and a boatload of wacked out magic, blasts this little fella to life spectacularly. Stumbling through the trials and tribulations, unexpected twists, sharp turns and thin lines, testing our characters in ways they could have never anticipated. Showcasing thrilling, well rounded scenario’s that punch dead center with such intensity and glittering precision, blasting this little treasure to life spectacularly. The characters are authentic and realistic with qualities and traits that transforms into outstanding personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions creating a colorful backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Fantastic job Mawson, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
L.C. Mawson is one of my favorite authors, the kind that not only produce perfect examples of take genres and story lines I enjoy but also do so with genres and story lines I usually don’t like. It’s a super power and she’s literally never put out an ebook that’s not been a 5-star wonder. So now we come to her Ember Academy for Young Witches series. Her take on the currently popular “academy” plot. No surprise that I rush to get the first book in this series (Basics of Spellcraft, separately reviewed), or that I loved it so much. No surprise that History of Magic (Book 2) is equally fantastic. Once again a great story (see the publisher’s blurb for a good non-spoilery summary) that’s perfectly told, with a perfect slow-burn romance, and great action (and, of course, magic), starring a top-notch kick-a** heroine (my favorite kind of character, and with a wonderfully crafted supporting cast. Highly recommended.
