I received a free copy of this book from BookSprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
When they met back in college they had attraction and chemistry. Although they never acted on it, there was the bantering sure but that was it. Now , a few years later Aiden is in pursuit of his fix. After school Scarlett left and Aiden has been on this roller coaster ride ever since. He has a need for the darker side of his addiction. He has his fix meeting at lunch, in the bathroom before he is rudely interrupted by none other than her….the only one he has really ever wanted and couldn’t have. She says some things, and before leaving hands him her card.
Meeting her boyfriend for lunch at the little cafe was out of the normal for him. Scarlett didn’t really think too much about that, but she is noticing he has not really been listening and he is very distracted, not talkative and he lets her know that. Feeling the need to freshen up before going back to work she no sooner gets to the bathroom, she has to walk in on the one guy that she yearned for and never acted upon that feeling….he is still doing what he has always done….she only wants to help.
Aiden arrives back at work, and he is shaken by the images of Scarlett catching him in the bathroom. What’s worse is he can’t shake the images of what he was doing, about to do in that bathroom were with her, and not the nameless woman he was with. Aiden’s assistant tolerates and banters with him when his comments and suggestions come out. Now she tells him she is going to make an appointment with Dr. Scarlett O’Brien for him, that he needs to be healed. Reluctantly he agrees, but when it comes to the appointment, things start to change quickly and hotly. Things lead to places Aiden hasn’t gone and bringing Scarlett with him. He tells her and himself that he can’t be healed, but he can and will own and break Scarlett. She challenges him and he will prove to her that he is right.
Scarlett is now back at her office when her assistant tells here there is an emergency patient appointment. Just as that is said in walks Aiden. Scarlett goes weak in the knees. She always has when it comes to him. It just so happens to fall in her lap when her now ex boyfriend springs a bit of bad news on her. Aiden is in her office and she vows to heal him, he is vowing to her that he will break her. They heat up right away, and things start at a faster than a race pace for them. Scarlett learns right off the bat what dark things Aiden likes, wants and will not do without. It takes no time for the relay race they are in with each other to hit turns that lead to arguments and coming to agreements.
Time goes by, Aiden asks Scarlett to move into his apartment with him, another first for him. They fight and make up, try to heal/break each other, fight and make up more. Lots of mores happening in that regard. A discovery has these two finally looking at what they have in a new light. Both like it and want it to continue, but Scarlett is reaching for more, Aiden tells her and convinces himself he won’t ever be that for her. More fights and more making up. A promise with is made between the two and it has a symbol to be worn by both of them as proof of that promise. Then a surprising twist happens at a bit of a key moment, Aiden sees something he dislikes, he storms off. Scarlett gets home to talk to him as soon as she can, but he is angry. There is no abuse happening, however Aiden loses his grip for a moment, with no intention of hurting her but he does. She leaves, he wants to stop her and goes after her briefly, but the residue of him going to far is right there in front of him. He looks around the apartment, her symbol was left.
He is desperate, he is hopeless, he is bombarding her phone with texts, sending gifts, anything and everything he can to get her back. He sees all the boxes that Scarlett had returned his gifts in sitting there. He thinks of the one word they agreed upon, and an idea hits him. When this gift arrives at Scarlett’s office, she needs to talk to him face to face. Time for the truth and all the ugly past to set free, and to forgive each other. When she arrives at his office, he thinks she is there to return that last gift. She is not, she is however offering something Aiden wants desperately. They discuss things is great detail, and they say how they feel. Rules are made and amazingly followed by both of them, and the growing/healing/loving and surprising way their happily ever after starts happens at this time too.
I am a bit disappointed because I was hoping for more storyline here.
I was gifted an ARC in return of an honest review.
