In “His Second Chance at Forever”, from author Lynne Marshall, we meet two dedicated medical professionals who both need a healing touch in their lives. Dr. Jason Rogers is the stern and steely family practice GP of a medical clinic. Suffering from the tragic loss of his wife and daughter, Jason prefers to avoid emotional involvements and keeps others at a distance. When Registered Nurse Practitioner Claire Albright joins the medical group, her sincere smile and her holistic approach to treating patients both begin to stir unwanted feelings in Jason. Claire also has a young daughter, Gina, whose presence serves as a painful reminder to Jason of the absence of his own sweet child. At first, Jason wants nothing to do with Claire’s alternative medical treatments, but he soon comes to respect her knowledge and professionalism. He feels guilt over his attraction to Claire, and struggles with the sense that he is betraying his late wife. Claire has her own inner conflicts, and has no intention of becoming involved with the taciturn Dr. Rogers. In the past, when Claire had become chronically ill with Lupus, her former husband could not handle a wife who was not always at her best. He made her feel less than desirable, and their marriage came to a painful end. She is afraid that another romantic relationship will suffer the same fate, but she is greatly attracted to Jason. Lynne Marshall’s experience as a Registered Nurse lends an interesting authenticity to the medical story line, and her heartwarming characterizations make this a very touching and satisfying romance read. Seeing Jason come to terms with his loss and come alive again, and watching Claire overcome her self-doubts and bloom again as a woman makes you root for these two lovers to find their very happy ending.

Two people, both in their private hell, find in each other the healing and affirmation they need. Whilst Dr Jason Rogers is brooding and grumpy, Claire Albright takes each day as it comes and spreads brightness, colour and joy in her wake. Jason discovers that he cannot resist her influence and when she needs his help, he steps up to the plate. If he carefully compartmentalises his life and memories, he would still be able to allow his feelings for Claire to surface, but allowing the cute pre-schooler Gina into his life and his heart, takes more courage. The novel is warm, sweet and funny and is generally well written. It is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. Together two damaged souls find hope and healing.
His Second Chance at Forever is a fairly short but really sweet stand-alone love story, as viewed through alternating points of view. Both Jason and Claire are very likable, and Gina (Claire’s daughter) is adorable. Their healing journey is both emotional, but also engaging. I easily stepped into the movement of the story as it swept me toward the happy ending. I only wish this book was longer, or included an epilogue.
This is the first book I’ve read by author Lynne Marshall, but I look forward to reading more of her works. She has a very smooth and vivid style that moves the story forward with each scene. She has mastered the art of chemistry and passion without explicit vulgarities. Thank you.
Content alert: There are some life threatening medical scenes, some very passionate kissing and some vaguely implied sex. No vulgarities or swearing.

Like hearing of her ideas to keep the patients calm before their appointments.

A heartwarming tale of starting anew! With easy to connect with characters and a back story filled with sadness and strife, Lynne Marshall takes us on a journey of finding love again when you least expect it. Her rich storytelling lets us feel the weight of Jason’s grief, while at the same time letting us start to hope for a glimmer of life to come back into his eyes again as this mother and daughter begin to brighten his days. Really enjoyed this sweet romance and look forward to more in the series!
Doctor Jason Rogers lost a lot four years ago, and he has no interest in rejoining the world any further than he has to. He’s content to keep to himself, care for his patients and be the resident curmudgeon in his practice.
Claire Albright is happy to be given this chance to become the new nurse practitioner at Jason’s office. Little does she know when she bounds in to introduce herself with her adorable daughter by her side that she will be opening a wound that never heals. She doesn’t know his past, but once she learns it, she knows that her little one reminds him of the daughter he lost and breaks his heart again every time he sees her.
‘He’d come out of his hibernation; let his guard down enough to enjoy Claire’s company. He didn’t deserve to be alive, or to feel, or to enjoy anything. Ever. He wouldn’t slip up again.’ (p. 98)
For the last four years Jason Rogers has grieved for the wife and daughter that he lost in an automobile accident and he has dealt with the guilt that he wasn’t with them. Now his life revolves solely around his patients and his medical practice. Claire Albright is a bright, intelligent Nurse Practitioner who is dealing with her own issues. Claire has a beautiful little girl but her diagnosis of Lupus not only robbed her of her health, it also prompted her husband to divorce her for “someone healthier”. It is when Claire is hired as the fifth member of Jason’s medical practice that this book title comes into play. Jason’s determination to remain true to the memory of his wife and daughter is challenged by this special young woman who often brings her adorable little girl to work and he finds himself falling under the spell of both of them. As he wrestles with his emotions he asks himself “What have I done?” and he vows that this cannot happen. Will he ever accept a second chance at forever?
I don’t know what is best about Lynne Marshall’s books. Is it that she often uses her knowledge and experiences as a nurse to write believable stories with a medical background? Is it because she creates realistic characters that you would like to know in real life? Or could it be that even in the darkest moments she always offers hope and she reaffirms that there is still goodness in the world? It doesn’t really matter because Marshall is an author that you can always count on when you need a sweet, romantic story to brighten your day (or night). And this book doesn’t disappoint!
His Second Chance at Forever touches on loss and grief; denial and acceptance; and the hope of love and second chances. It is the first book in a new series, Santa Barbara Sunsets, and I look forward to reading more from Lynne Marshall.
I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and these are my honest opinions.
Jason lost his wife and daughter in a tragic train wreck, ending his happily ever after. Claire is diagnosed with Lupus and her husband decides he can no longer be with her. When Claire takes a job at Rogers Medical Group, Jason and her butt heads from the beginning. Will this feisty woman and her adorable daughter, Gina, be what he’s been needing in his life? I won’t leave any spoilers, but I will say I really enjoyed this second chance story.
