Not sure why it took me so long to delve into Theodora Taylor’s books, but now I’m hooked. What a hoot! Great characters, dealing with very sensitive issues, AND she lovingly creats a funny, realistic fantasy I thoroughly enjoyed!
I loved this book. Go , the male lead was different from any male love interest that I have ever read about. The chemistry between the couple was great and I loved their story.
I really didn’t know what to expect when I picked this as my work out audiobook for the day, but I sure did get an adventure. Trying to explain the plot of this super fast paced, slightly over novella length book is like trying to explain the plot of a telenovela, so I’m not gonna because you very well might think I’m lying. It’s that wild. Go is a very strange hero, not because he’s on the spectrum, but because he’s not very nice. Even during romantic times, he’s always telling Nyla not to look at him etc. He believes she lied to him with no proof whatsoever, and then all of a sudden declares she didn’t do it when presented with bare minimum proof and expects Nyla to forgive him…nope. So if you’re looking for a good grovel, look elsewhere, but if you’re looking for a tonne of diversity, a bonkers plot and really good writing and a baddie FMC, then this might be something you’ll enjoy.
I liked the idea of a black protagonist. We don’t get enough of those, and I appreciate the idea of white not being the default. And what’s more I liked Nyla. Go was bad–really, really bad. The sex which was the point of the book didn’t sound like it was fun. Dude, it would flip me out. And the ending would have been better if the surprise didn’t happen. I was completely okay with their relationship ending before the baby was born.

STORY:
So key word, PLAN. That word is going to be stuck in my head for the next few days. This story gave me so many mix emotions. I can honestly say, I don’t think I have ever experienced this combo. I like it; it was weird and awkward all in one. An hour into this audio, I wasn’t sure how to feel about the start of this story. However, it all made sense once the story unfolded. Nyla is pregnant with Go’s late brother’s baby. Go devises a plan to create a fake marriage with Nyla to raise the baby.
Go was definitely a unique character for me, and he gave me anxiety throughout this story. It was different, and I like different. His character is dear to my heart because of his Asperger. I felt like his Asperger was also the third main character in this story, and not in a bad way. Nyla was not what I expected. Her and Go were such an odd mix, but getting to know her, you see why it worked with her and Go. I also enjoyed the climax of the story, as it was not what I expect with the turn of events.
SEXUAL CHEMISTRY
So I was not all the way happy with the sex scenes. They felt almost like teasers, and then it was snatched away from me. I liked that from some scenes I got to see a bit of Go dominant side that peaked out.
SECONDARY CHARACTERS:
Go’s family was interesting. We didn’t see them a lot, but I love that thanksgiving moment with them. I like the other characters that made this story interestingly well, good or bad.
OVERALL:
A quick and likable story that surprisingly put a smile on my face that I was not expecting. Would I check out the other books in the series, yes.
TRIGGERS: mention of child sexual abuse.
****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.
It’s like a soap opera. OMG is like the only response. But I really liked the relationship between Rodrigo”Go” and Nyla. And they really did their research on spectrum disorders and touch and sound sensitivities. But wow. So many twists and turns. Pregnant with ex-bfs baby who is currently staring your former foster sister. Where is definitely a MAJOR story about what ended that adoption years ago. And now she is currently propositioned today marry the baby daddy ex-bfs younger tech billionaire brother. But there are schemes and plans lying in wait that have been in the works for over a year. Long game plans for Nyla she never knew when agreeing to this for the sake of his family and all the abuse victims she is working to help. I was so upset when I thought it was ending one way. Thinking Sophia has won. I won’t spoil. But I was greatly pleased that things got cleared up in the epilogue. Loved it! Despite the soap opera story line. Sometimes the crazy is exactly what you need.
Oh my gosh!!! This is my first book by this author and if everything she writes is like this…I’ve found a new favorite author!!!
I went into this thinking it was going to be a fast read with an over the top hero and something that might fall in line with an Alex Riley book. I was sooo wrong!!! Yes, it was fast but holy heck!!! It was sooo much more than what AR gives us!!!
This heroine is all kinds of weirdish, but there’s a reason for it. I wasn’t sure if I’d like her but I totally fell in love with her but mostly because of how she really screwed up the hero’s “plan”. She had some things to overcome and she did but this isn’t one of those magically fixed things, despite the length of this book, she really has to face some things head on.
Go, the hero, was so incredibly amazing! He fed all my hero hungers in one bite! I loved that he was geeky but somewhat possessive but more importantly that he just couldn’t compute how Nyla could interrupt all his plans. I don’t have the adequate words to describe him and really, you just need to read this to understand.
While this can be read in a couple of hours, this has so much substance to it. I couldn’t believe I
was getting all the feels, emotions, action and drama laced with plenty of humor in such a short read. This never happens for me. But man oh man, when I got to the last part of the book I was amazed at all that was happening and how cohesive it was to what went on previously. Let me also say that this trope usually doesn’t work for me but I was more than okay with it because of the way this author developed the story.
Absolutely loved this and cursed my book friends who haven’t pointed this author out to me before now.
OH EM GEE I love this book so much I just can’t even. One of my fav heroes EVER. Just grab it.
Love someone because of their differences not in spite of them!
I am an audiobook devourer, at minimum a book a day, seriously, I read A LOT, and mostly romances! I am also a writer, so am aware of the story from a technical point of view. That being said, I still love getting lost in the adventure of the story put before me and still get all the feels from the flutters to the knots and even the tears and the giggles. From the blurb of a book combined with the author’s style, if I have read other titles by them, I have a fairly good guess as to what is afoot in the story. It is not quite often that I say to myself, “I didn’t see that coming”. This story got me twice. Well….. Mostly once with the second time being a “you better be lying” moment!
There was a twist that was totally new and, yes, I didn’t see that coming! That was quickly followed by the second surprise that I didn’t see coming and was more of a “you better be lying” moment that had my heart in palpitations. Seriously, I had to take a break and breathe it out … and maybe do some creative cursing to the abandoned rant that had been building inside of me.
I loved it but would have to say to those of you that are like me and need that HEA, be patient. Keep that hope in your heart and it will all work out in the end.
Now to the book itself!
His Pretend Baby is a story about loving someone because of their differences not in spite of them.
The main character, Go, took me for a loop trying to figure out who was actually being addressed as there were too many names being thrown about. Let me simplify it for you. Rodrigo is his birth name, Go is his preferred nickname, Burger is the name his family calls him because he has Asperger. Total A-holes right?
So Nyla dated Marco, which is Go’s brother. It didn’t work out with him, but they have a drunken one-night-stand that results in a pregnancy. On the way to tell his current girlfriend what happened, Marco dies in a car accident. Sounds like a jerk move, but in the immortal words of Ross, “they were on a break!”
Go gets the confession out of Nyla before his family finds out and wants her to marry him and say the baby is his in an effort to keep the child with the family. He worries she will leave and the loss will drive his parent’s over the edge.
The two of them have chemistry but Nyla doesn’t like lying. Go manipulates the situation to his advantage and gets what he wants and a lot of what he doesn’t. Go’s perfectly executed life is supposed to go according to “the plan” of his own creation. Nyla is an expert at disruption and puts her skills to good use!
The narrator is Clementine Dove and she does well with multiple characters. Each person has their own voice and it is easy to get lost in the story.
This was my first time reading anything by this author and I definitely want to read more, but I will keep this experience in mind as I moved forward.
