Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors rise to Britain’s defense by taking to the skies… not aboard aircraft but atop the mighty backs of fighting dragons.
When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future — and an … and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France’s own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte’s boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.

Fantastic series – wish there were more so I could keep reading them. Best novels about dragons I’ve ever read.
Imagine a world in which humans never had to develop planes because we had tame dragons. Now, imagine stunning aerial battles and a culture finding out that their “livestock” thinks.
Based on the Napoleonic wars period of real-life history, but in a world where there are dragons. The mix of real-life history and dragons is very well done with well-thought-out technologies and tactics. The story is rather unique and surprising and the rest of the series continues with much the same quality.
Fantastic beginning to one of my all time favorite series. Set during the Napoleonic Wars in an alternative universe, intelligent dragons are comparable to the air corp. I love the companionship between Captain & Dragon. Temeraire, the black dragon, singular of his kind in the West, chooses his own captain, an unwilling Capt. Will Laurence. It …
Nice character building and shows research on historical times and manners, an alternative history. I enjoyed and am reading sequels now.
Unbelievably wonderful language and period details, combined with a truly original and interesting twist on the actual history and politics of the time. Read all eight books in this series in one fortnight’s orgy of bliss, and now wish I could read them all over for the first time again! Exceptional, really first-class, writing.
Great rewriting of English history with a dragon twist!
This book is a whimsical view of how the Napoleonic war might have happened if, in fact, they had dragons that fought alongside humankind. Also it was refreshing to see how the actual dragons communicated and viewed war.
Only buy this book if you like to be hooked by a great read. This is the first in a series. You won’t be able to resist buying the next, and the next.
Fantastic read!
Very original plot with enough historical possibilities to keep you reading.
Loved the growth of the relationship between Temeraire and the rider.Period details are accurate within the alternate history world, and the prose is a pleasure. About time for me to read it again.
Excellent, well written series.
Great book! I’ve read it multiple times. Check it out if you like dragons and alternate history.
Great new take on the Napoleonic Wars……with talking, Fighting Dragons!
I thought that this book was brilliant! I love the idea of Dragons being around
and fighting in historical battles. Temeraire is by far my favorite Dragon in fiction.
Well written story with a good storyline.
Loved the characters, it reminded me of all the old saga’s that I return to again and again.
These dragons are NOT those of McAffrey’s Pern, they are huge! And that makes all the difference….
This is a fantastic series.
