FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF Sometimes I Lie “Stunning. Addictive. This book should not be missed!” –Samantha Downing “Deliciously dark…will have readers tearing through the pages.” –Mary Kubica “Gives Gone Girl a run for its money…I couldn’t stop reading.” –Christina Dalcher There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means … every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means someone is always lying.
When a woman is murdered in Blackdown, a quintessentially British village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Detective Jack Harper is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation.
Someone isn’t telling the truth, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.
His & Hers is a twisty, smart, psychological thriller. A gripping tale of suspense, told by expertly-drawn narrators that will keep readers guessing until the very end.
“For the ultimate rollercoaster reading experience this year, look no further than His & Hers by Alice Feeney.” –Woman & Home

In His & Hers, Alice Feeney expertly weaves a deliciously dark, unsettling tale that will have readers tearing through the pages with haste, trying and failing to guess the true culprit in this spine-chilling murder mystery. A creepy thrill ride that Feeney fans will adore.
O-M-G! This was, by far, the best audiobook I have EVER listened to! I not only listened to it, but I also binge-listened to it! Macmillan Audio did a fantastic job selecting not only one, but two narrators for Alice Feeney’s newest release, “His & Hers.” Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine’s narrations were right on point and, bloody hell, the killer’s voice was the absolute creepiest!
//
Even if you are not an audiobook fan, listen to this – let “His & Hers” be the exception!
//
This nail-biting story is told from three different POVs: his, hers, and the killers—each section bringing us deeper into the darkness that is the human psyche. As newsreader Anna Andrews and Detective Jack Harper find themselves mixed up in Blackdown’s latest murder investigation, it is near impossible to trust any of the characters. With several misdirects and questionable reliability, there were SO many times that I, for sure, thought that I had finally figured everything out. Still, NOTHING could prepare me for those final moments! This was by far one of the wildest book endings, in the best way possible!
//
The author succeeds in taking her readers on a journey, an observation really, hell-bent on discovering just how far we, as a human race, are willing to go to protect our secrets.
//
Alice Feeney has written herself straight into my Top 5 of 2020! I’ve rated this book a firm, five-glorious-stars and would highly recommend it to psychological thriller fans everywhere. If you have the chance to experience the audio version, do yourself a favor and press play. I can guarantee you won’t regret it!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers at Macmillan Audio, and the author Alice Feeney for providing me with an advanced listener’s copy of this title in exchange for my honest review.

I’d also like to take a moment to thank one of my best bookstagram buddies, Nina! She surprised me with an Amazon gift card for my birthday, and I chose to pre-order the hardback of His & Hers for my personal collection!
“Oh what a tangled web we weave when we first start to deceive.” Shakespeare’s warning about lies describes this book in that it is a tangled web indeed. However the author does an amazing job with deception and the ever widening web. I was caught so tightly in her web, I had no idea who to trust at all and the final chapters were just one shock after another! I am definitely not going into talking about the book at all. I would advise you to stop reading the reviews and start reading the book. Many reviewers try not to give away any hints but it is hard with books so well done. We all love to talk about what we read. This book, though, is one you really want to walk into blind. The characters are well done. The plot twists and turns. The ending was shocking. That’s all you need to know. To enjoy this book to the fullest, please just read it.
Thank you Goodreads, Alice Feeney and Flatiron Books. I won an advanced copy of this book in a giveaway. I voluntarily reviewed it and my opinions are based on my enjoyment of this book.
I received a gifted copy and am providing a review.
This tale is told in three different voices, one of “His,” one of “Hers,” and the third voice being that of …
Anna and Jack, a divorced couple, found themselves running into each other through circumstance of a murder case. Anna, who had been covering for the news anchor (Cat Jones) who was away on maternity leave, found herself as a field correspondent again upon Cat’s return. This led her to a story to cover in Blackburn, a place she had vowed never to return. Other women were turning up murdered. Strange things began happening that made Anna think perhaps she was drinking too much or maybe she just didn’t remember doing certain things, like tidying up after herself. Strange things also began happening to Jack as if someone was trying to set him up to take the blame for these murders.
I found myself thinking Person A was the guilty party, but no maybe it was Person B, yet again I went back to Person A. There are some other stories intermixed in the main telling of this tale. It all went back to the day of high school when a group of five girls were seemingly good friends … Rachel, Helen, Anna, Zoe, Catherine. This is definitely a story of past secrets coming to the surface for revenge to be exacted.
Mind blowing is not even a good description of this book!! I don’t even have words! That ending…….. wow!! If you like psychological thrillers, this is the book for you. I am still shaking my head…..!!! Whoa!!!!! I read this book in a few hours. I could not put it down!
Trigger warning: sexual assault and animal abuse
That saying there are two sides to every story is very true for this book. Told in dual narrations, you get his side of the story and then her side- and one of them is lying. Anna Andrews is a news anchor who finds herself investigating a murder. Jack Harper is Detective Chief Inspector and while suspicious of Anna, he himself ends up a suspect! A fast paced thriller with a good twist!
Such fascinating characters, twists and turns.
Oh, Alice Feeney. You had me at Richard Armitage and Stephanie Rancine. Here’s my reader confession: I pick audiobooks by the narrator. There, I said it. I search and read something just for the narrator finding the best stories and authors I may not have otherwise.
A twisted, mind bending, atmospheric suspense thriller His & Hers on audiobook is a binge-worthy listen. Clear your day, afternoon, night, and don’t expect to sleep. Told in three alternating voices. ‘His’ DCI Jack Harper, a detective. ‘Hers’ Anna Andrews, a news reporter. The third is the murderer, the only one who will be telling the truth. There are connections between Anna, Jack and the victim. The twists, and turns are expertly woven by Alice Feeney, every time I thought I knew what was going to happen I was wrong. I was guessing until the very end. If you’re specifically sensitive to material containing animal cruelty or sexual abuse vet this book personally for content.
I highly recommend His & Hers on audiobook. Narrators Richard Armitage and Stephanie Rancine are both outstanding, hypnotic, unreliable. The use of the third unidentified narrator as the murderer is effective and bone chilling. It adds to the suspense.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced listen copy and the chance to review His & Hers by Alice Feeney. All opinions are my own.
A dark and twisty tale switching between Anna (Hers), Jack (His), and the killer’s POV, so we never know who exactly to trust. Intricately plotted and incredibly fun, the story is filled with lies, revenge, and nasty secrets. Okay, some of the twists, especially the last one, were just completely unbelievable, but this doesn’t detract from the fun. A deliciously dark and unsettling thriller.
An addictive, fast-paced, and deeply disturbing psychological thriller, I highly recommend listening to HIS & HERS as an audiobook. There are two main narrators for the heroine and hero–both unreliable, both battling personal demons, both keeping secrets–and a creepy third voice that belongs to the killer.
As the story twists one way, unwinds and twists in a different direction, we discover the killer is using a voice-changing gizmo, which adds to the suspense. Bodies pile up, pieces of the story emerge to connect the key players and victims, but there’s no hint of whether the killer is a woman or a man. Not until the breath-stealing end.
Oh, the twists & turns and the complex relationships! Don’t start this if you have something else you need to do — it truly is a book you hate to put down.
This ending was a bit cray cray and I didn’t see it coming. The story is told between the two main characters with each chapter from a different perspective and at times jumps back to the past. It was a quick and enjoyable read and leaves you guessing up until the last chapter.
There are two sides to every story. While it’s unclear whose sides you are hearing just know it worth the read.
Anna Andrew’s a journalist who wants to report the news while Jack Harper is a detective who wants to examine a case before presenting the facts.
When a murder investigation in their hometown brings them together they are at odds with each other with her wanting to be the first to break the news on-air while he wants to keep the information on the downlow given his history with the victim.
Anna got her start in broadcasting at the age of twenty. She met her husband while working as a correspondent at a scene. Anna worked her way to News Anchor from the bottom. When Cat left for maternity leave Anna was offered her spot. Everything was great for two years until Cat returned sending Anna back out in the field.
Detective Chief Inspector Jack Harper of the Major Crime Team in Blackdown found himself in an unusual situation when he had to work a murder case involving a woman he had sex with the night before. Jack was the lead detective on the murder investigation of a woman he had a sexual relationship with. Jack was in a predicament which became worse when evidence was brought forth.
The main characters are Jack and Anna and I so badly wanted them to be Jack and Diane like the song by John Mellencamp. Anyhow, Alice provided the reader with developed backstories on both characters offering enough information to establish the present state of mind. Each main character had individual points of view about their own past mistakes, but it was up to the reader to determine who was lying. All the while little bread crumbs of truth were placed within these chapters. You might think you have it all figured out. Alice gave only what was required saving the best for her big reveal.
The investigative approach is handled from the past working its way forward. To better understand the murdered victim the reader needs to understand the relationship she had with Jack and Anna.
This is my first read by Alice Feeney. His & Hers was chosen based on it being a psychological thriller with a twist. I’m a sucker for a well written clever plot twist. The chapters labeled His and Her provided the necessary distinction between perspectives being addressed.
Alice used a different formula than most to solve this murder case. To say it was solved by investigators is stretch of the truth. Jack played a minor role as a detective. This doesn’t read like a typical detective story with investigators. Rather the story unfolds by reviewing the past. The past leads to the present.
Holy crap. Never again shall I worry about my books being too dark. This was brilliant!
So this was the first audiobook ARC that I got to finish through Netgalley and I’m so excited to be able to share my thoughts with you on this! I am an audiobook fanatic, and I always love to recommend a good one when I come across them, so let’s see what I thought about for this one.
This is a murder thriller story, with multiple POVs. We hear his side of the story, her side, and the murderer’s side. This is one of those books where I feel like being in an audiobook format gives you the best experience of the story, although it can work out just fine reading it physically.
The interesting thing about his and her side of the story is that they are ex-spouses, but they don’t know everything about one another. This is really the main reason why neither of them truly trust one another, even with them being in a long term relationship and marriage. The reasonings for why they are not together today, and for why being in Blackdown is so crucial to their past and the present mystery today was also something really intriguing to hear about. I feel like you hear more about the past from Anna than you do from Jack since it seems like Anna’s past is the reason why everything that is happening today is going on around her. If anything, Jack is just the detective figure on this case and he just so happened to be Anna’s ex husband and that’s why he’s involved. It doesn’t make it less of a thriller though, and later on towards the end of the novel, you can see how Jack may have been a little bit more involved than he initially thought.
The main thing that I will say though: nothing is as it seems.
See my tweet thread of me thinking that I knew who the murderer was and still being wrong when the very ending came up and you get to hear who the true murderer is! It freaked me out so much, and wow it just blew me away. I’m not much of a thriller person – meaning I don’t always read thriller novels as my go-to genres – but dang this was one of the best books that I got to listen to this year! I have already been recommending it to people who like thrillers and haven’t had a chance to experience this novel yet. I still highly recommend the audiobook if that’s your thing, OR if you’re willing to try it out… I think you should!
The narrators for this novel were Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine. Now… who was the narrator for the murderer? Well, I can’t tell you that because I don’t know either… for the most part.
Silly gif aside, it really was a freaky way to make the murderer truly involved in this narrative. With masking the true identity of the killer, not just through the words of the story, but the way that you can’t tell whether the killer is a man or a woman, young or old, anything that could be considered a cue to their identity. Making this into an audiobook makes it that much easier to really show a difference between the people telling the story and giving it that kind of thriller feel that you sometimes can’t get just with text. I do feel like this novel would still be great to read physically, but I must say that listening to it was much better for me to get into the story and want to know what was going to happen next.
Even when the final chapter came along – which was a point of view as well and takes place after the main events of the story – I was still guessing who was the murderer and why everything happened the way it did. It was just absolutely amazing and I’m really happy with the choices of narrators that we have for this audiobook. The choice of narrators and how they voice a character – or multiple if it’s a third person POV – really makes or break my enjoyment of an audiobook for me. Luckily, this one was a huge success.
I think the narration flow really worked well with this one, and it felt so intense. The flow of this story was well done, even with some of the moments where Anna would reminisce on what happened during her pre-teen years. Since she was just thinking about it, and it wasn’t considered an official flashback – at least in my case I didn’t consider them as such – those transitions made complete sense to me and I could see how Anna was thinking back on what she felt at the time, but also reflecting on what happened to her now that she is an adult and knows better. It didn’t feel like there was any question on what was happening, or what point of view we were listening to during those times, which really helped me follow along with the story.
Sometimes I feel like thrillers can jump around especially when the author is trying to give the hero and the murderer / unsub similar amount of page time, but even though this murderer didn’t have as many chapters as Anna and Jack, their chapters were still very much crucial to the story and had enough weight to keep up with the other two main characters. Also someone please tell me how I thought the main character’s name was Richard for some reason? That’s the worst mistake I’ve ever made.
All in all, I think that this was a great book to read, and a really great audiobook to listen to. I am so glad that Netgalley started providing audiobook arcs to us to listen to because they have been really helping me get through the books that I want to and need to read. I would definitely recommend this audiobook, and I recommend all narrators that were a part of this book. I don’t know if there would ever be a sequel to this with the way that the book ended, but boy oh boy would it be interesting to see how that would go.
I’ve already talked about this audiobook with multiple people recommending it so I’d definitely rate this one pretty high in my book.
There are always two sides to every story. In this case, it’s his – Detective Jack Harper and hers – Anna Andrews, a newscaster who’s been filling in and is ceremoniously booted off the air when she’s no longer needed. Anna’s determined to get back on top at the newsroom as she covers a murder in her hometown. It’s also where her ex-husband lives, and he just happens to be the detective mentioned above.
This murder hits a little too close to home for both of them. The victim is not only a childhood friend of Anna’s, but she’s also the woman Jack’s been messing around with (including the night before she’s killed in the place where she’s found. Oops.) And then, before you can say it’s a coincidence Jack owns the same boots as the killer, there isn’t just one murder. Anna’s childhood group of friends is being killed one by one. A serial killer is on the loose. Could Anna be next?
This one has so many twists and turns, I had to force myself to not look ahead to see where it was taking me. And when you think all has been revealed, you might wonder why the story’s continuing. It’s over, right? Well, don’t let go of the safety bar just yet, because the author’s about to take you on an unexpected trip back around the tracks of this roller coaster. Hold on tight.
4 stars
Apparently I am behind the times because this is the first book that I have read by Alice Feeney, but let me just say that it won’t be the last! I now need to go back and read her other books.
Told in alternating viewpoints of Anna and Jack with the occasional narration thrown in by “the killer”, this book kept me on the edge of my seat. This was one of those books where I kept saying “just one more chapter”, reading long after I should have been in bed.
I don’t want to spoil anything for you because the less you know the better. You can find plenty of reviews that give you a synopsis, but I honestly think going into this one blind is the best way to enjoy this book.
Thank you to Flatiron Books for my copy of this book via NetGalley
Take a trip on a fast paced ride as you follow “his” and “hers” sides to the story. Anna returns homes to her hometown to follow and cover the mysterious murders that are occurring. While home she reconnect with ex-husband Jack who is not only investigating the murders but is also being investigated.
Throughout the story we are taken back and forth through each Anna and Jack’s posts and present while all the time wondering who is telling the truth? It is a race against time to solve the mystery and stay one step ahead to not find themselves next.
His and hers is a psychological thriller by author Alice Feeney. Not usually a big fan of those but I really love that author since au debut novel Sometimes I lie and this one is really good.
You have 3 different PoV , him, her and another one that is the truth about who’s doing the murders. Anna is working hard as a TV presenter of the BBC’s lunchtime news and is now the main one. She will be ask to cover a murder in Blackdown, her hometown, and doesn’t want to go but she won’t have a choice. But soon she will not only cover it but also will be at the center of it.
DCI Jack is Anna ex-husband. There relationship comes to an end when their daugther died a couple of years ago. He never tought to be working in Blackdown. When to body of a young woman is found, he will hide that he knew her but soon realize is one of the suspect in his own investigation. And Anna also knew the victim…
I keep guessing until the end who was the murderer and didn’t see the twist in the end coming. Totally recommend this book.
