THE AMISH TEACHER
By Patricia Davids
THE AMISH TEACHER by Patricia Davids is the third book in the The Amish Bachelors series.
The story is about Lillian Keim who is happy with her life as a school teacher. She found out years before that do to an operation to save her live that she would be unable to bear children. Knowing the importance of having a family was to the Amish, she assumed that she would always remain unmarried and was content to have all her scholars as her children a few hours every day.
Except for the few years her family had moved away, she’s always had one constant, her deep friendship and fellow lover of books, Timothy Bowman. She finds her friendship turning to deeper feelings even though she tries very hard to keep them at bay.
Timothy helps his father in his carpentry shop, does farming and is on one of the volunteer firemen. He the only one among his brothers that hasn’t married, but longs for a wife to share his life with and to have a dozen kids with. His friendship with Lillian is very special to him as his is to her.
He’s spending time at the school for their annual fire prevention class when there is a huge fire at the neighboring farm. Timothy goes to help with the fire and when the fire threatens the school, Lillian start preparations to protect the children in her care. It’s during this event and the fear of not ever seeing the other again that they both start to realize that their friendship has grown into much, much more.
Timothy is asked to become a teacher alongside Lilland to help with the older kids. Some cousins are come to do apprenticeship with Father, so the times was great. However, their working together and seeing each other every day, makes their relationship develop and complicate things at the same time.
There are more arson fires to contend with and emotions to struggle through. Lillian fears that her brother, Jeramiah, who has been acting strange, had something to do with the fires. Lillian and Jeramiah learn that her parents plan on moving back to Wisconsin. They learn of the generosity of the Enhlisch when Debra, the county nurse, delivers a check after she had turned to the internet for funds to help the Amish after all the fires.
This was the first book I have read in this series so it can definitely be read as a standalone. The book is an adorably sweet romance that also touches on many of the beliefs and traditions of the Amish. It’s a story of faith, having faith and believing in God and his plan for us and not what we have planned. It’s a story of good and bad – sometimes in the same person. And sometimes the bad we perceive really is just misunderstood. I would definitely recommend this book.
PLAIN TARGET
By Dana R. Lynn
PLAIN TARGET by Dana R. Lynn is the first book in the Amish Country Justice series.
The stories is about Jess (Jessica) McGrath who is a horse trainer and owner of River Road Stables after the supposedly suicide of her brother, Cody. Jess just can’t believe that he killed himself or did all the horrible things were accusing him of. Her goal was the save the stables from going bankrupt and clear her brother’s name in the process.
She comes face to face with Seth Travis the one that she had fallen for as a teen that ended up betrayed her trust. That betrayal led to her being bullied in the worst of ways and her transferring to another high school to get away from her fears. Seeing him again brings back a lot of memories – good and bad.
On the other hand, Seth is convinced that due to his Father’s history and his past mistakes that he’s not husband material. His Father’s distasteful behavior also turns Seth away from believing in God and religion altogether. Through seeing Jess’s exhibitions of faith and her strong beliefs, Seth begins to see religion and himself in a new light just as he admits that he’s falling head over hills for Jess.
As someone continues to threaten Jess’s safety, Seth is more and more determined that he will do anything to keep her safe and to solve the mystery of what had really happened to Cody and the missing money.
Jess and Seth are on the run more than once finding refuse once in the Amish community at Jess’s oldest friend’s home. There are several attacks on Jess, people are murdered, Seth is shot, Rebecca’s home is set on fire and Jess’s home is trashed. Through it all, it’s an adventure to get answers to questions, to stay safe and find out if there can be more than friendship between two old friends that come back together later in life while both have their own baggage to deal with.
This book is definitely a heart beating, keep the pages turning book. It’s a book that deals with faith – the undeniable faith of one and the loss of faith for the other – and showing that through faith and prayer that all things are possible. I would highly recommend this book.
