Overall score:
I scored this book 5/5
Short Summary of the book:
This is a book for those of us who would like to have some advice on how to recruit staff in a way which helps you find the right person for your business; a person also who would likely remain with the business for a significant time.
What I liked about the book:
Although this is set out like a textbook, the book does not have a textbook feel to it. It makes an interesting read which gives several bits of good advice.
What I didn’t like about the book:
I may not have agreed with all the statements in the book, but I enjoyed reading the book nonetheless and have found several good tips for future recruitment in it.
My favourite bits in the book:
The many examples helped to make this an enjoyable read.
My least favourite bits in the book:
The main thing I did not agree with in this book is the use of personality tests. I’ve always been warned not to use them in recruitment. They are better placed in helping you manage the staff you already have.
Any further books in the series? Any more planned by this author?
I believe this author has written several other non-fiction books.
What books could this be compared to and why?
Recommendation:
In summary, I would recommend this book for the following readers:
Children No
Young Adult Probably not
Adult Yes, especially if you have a job in management or in charge of recruitment in your business
If you like to know more about good ways to recruit the right person, this book may be the book for you.
I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Book Description by Author:
Don’t rely on instincts alone.
Hiring. Is. King. The lesson seems so basic. Yet time after time, good companies stumble and lose their stride — just when they were poised for rapid growth. Why? Because their leaders treated hiring as a tedious chore. They posted an ad hoc ad. Took the first person with the right skills. Hired for immediate needs, rather than future flourishing.
In Hire Smart from the Start, Dave Carvajal distills lessons gained from 20 years in the trenches, building out and staffing two enormously successful Internet startups and helping firms like Tumblr, Buddy Media, and Shutterstock land the talent they need to reach their greatest potential.
Whether you’re a high-tech entrepreneur taking a startup public, or a food truck vendor with a concept that’s taking off, this book offers a proven formula to help you:
Find candidates whose values and working style fit your business Spot the 5 types of applicants you should never, ever hire Motivate “reach” candidates to leave their jobs and take a chance on your vision Develop meaningful incentives that make people stay And more
Accelerate success: hire smart from the start. This book shows you how.
