This was an absolutely-delightful, romantic romp. It had all the essential elements that make for a great, historical romance read. The story line was interesting, and the characters were complex and rich with life. I enjoyed this book immensely!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
All of her books, I’ve enjoyed. Each one keeps me thinking and never disappointed.
As far as these canned romances go, this one was better than others. I liked the historical aspect as well. Characters were more believable and the storyline didn’t feel like a side-note just to get the to sex scenes. Some of us actually like character development and plot! Thank you!
I love reading all of Fiona’s highlander books. This book did not disappoint me at all. The characters were very likable. Will be reading more of her books in the future.
A bit too much violence, but characters and plot were well done
A wonderful story of meeting as children, a feud separating them, a chance meeting when they are older, kidnapping, murder, traitors discovered, the truth coming out, and ending the feud plus much more making this an interesting read
This kind of reminds me of a Shakespearean play. Love, Passion, Jealousy, Greed, Madness, Demigod leanings, hatred, feuds, spies, Murder and mayhem. The story is riveting. It pulls you into the story by realistically relating the scenes, the characters, the emotional atmosphere and even the beauty of the environment. The drama in the story made this a page turner. I admired the H/h. They had leadership qualities that flourished under unbearable and dangerous situations and circumstances. Loyalty and respect were not easily given. But after fighting aside one another and assisting weak and the infirm helped bring it along. An exciting enemy to lover’s romance mixed in with long held grudges against each clan and a fight to end the bad blood and find happiness. I totally recommend this book and look forward to the next one from this author.
Surprisingly, this love story takes on epic proportions. Not only is there romance, but two clans have to come together to fight against a tyrannical clan laird. Duncan must choose his clan or Maira, or try to alliance a weaker clan to themselves. The machinations of the MacDonald clan will destroy many of the lives of these two clans, but they rise above the feud of their fathers to forge a new future.
Kidnapped—TWICE! Marra finally marries her true love!
A young girl and boy play happily together, when suddenly their fathers pull them away, and state they are never to play together again! Years later, when they meet at a gathering, they do not remember meeting each other before, but they again find themselves attracted to each other. Before they meet again, kidnapping, murders of old men, women and children, and deceptions of all kinds take place. A page-turning, edge-of-your-seat book, that I read straight through to the end!
The castle referred to, Knock Castle, actually existed and was as described in the story (according to Wikipedia!) The tension between the clans actually existed, and the MacGregors did have their name removed from them by order of the king, at least for a number of years. I enjoyed the history and geography lessons I learned from this book, in addition to the attention-getting story!
Absolutely one of my favorite books to date! Marra and Duncan met as children and were taught to hate each other. In the end only they can save each other. Will their reunion years later turn out to be one of happiness or sorrow? Death, adventure, suspense and intrigue await them as they work to find their way back to each other.
I enjoyed reading this book. I liked the characters and the flow of the storyline. I loved that that Marra was very strong through everything she went through. The book kept me turning the pages wanting more.
I’ve read several of Fiona Faris’s books and this one is one of my favorites. Marra, Duncan and the large “supporting” cast of characters are so clearly drawn that I was able to picture them in my mind. The story line was unusual and there were times throughout the novel, where as a reader, what unfolded for the characters was not anything I would’ve predicted. The writing is very good with good editing and characters you care about. I highly recommend this one. 🙂
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this love-at-first-sight story of 2 lairds in the making. The chemistry is palpable in the lovers’ first exchanges, and the intrigue builds fast. Readers will enjoy speculating on both antagonist and outcome.
Set aside a weekend for this NA medieval Scottish romance. I read an ARC and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
Duplicity, lies, and betrayals enough to break your heart and tear at your soul, but the love between Marra and Duncan survived and grew. I loved Duncan’s morals and integrity. He kept his promise not to take her virtue until they were wed! The Laird O’Skye was calculating and despicable in his dealings with Marra. Greed and jealous take an ugly turn and loyalties are tested. The villains are more cold blooded than reptiles! Sadly, a dear friend and ally is lost in the fray. I seriously cried for the loss. I liked seeing Ian grow by the story’s end.
Duncan and Marra are both strong people who are very capable of leading their respective clans. Unfortunately for Marra, she has been denied that right since she had been born a female. Duncan, on the other hand, doesn’t really want to be Laird. The story of how these two meet and go on to make such a formidable team is engrossing and also very historically informative at the same time. This also contains a nice long epilogue which is always a personal favorite of mine when reading a book.
