The story was good, but there were too many errors t make it enjoyable.
From the beginning I was drawn into the story. There was a flurry of emotion, drama and action that led to an adventure for Ava our heroine. I really enjoyed reading this book. Although sheltered from the world, Ava’s head was not as empty as a rock. She had wisdom, courage, fortitude, confidence, determination and much love to offer. Her betrothal to Ness Fenton terrified her. The Fenton name was feared for the wickedness of the prior laird Errol had been passed on to the new laird Ness. Ness had a fractured clan to save and repair. No one trusted him not to be like Errol. Errol had abused the people, the lands, anything and everything that would bring him pleasure or coin he took from the clan leaving them practically starving. The keep was in dire need of repairs it was uninhabitable. Ness was a good man. A fair and honest man. He would be a good laird for his people if only they would let him, trust him. This story is about loyalty, steadfastness, bravery and compassion. Ness had never met Ava, but the King had betrothed him and Ava came with a dowry so large it would see his clan through for several years. Ava feared Ness and ran away. But fate had other plans for her and Ness. We experience the struggles between Ava and Ness. Ness knew when he brought Ava back to Fenton lands, she would not be safe. He did not want to restrict her freedom but he had enemies and needed a trusted guard with her at all times. The story covers the dangers that did appear and how Ava unexpectedly went into action with no thought for her own safety. She thought only of the people even though she was not warmly welcomed. There was Cormac, who was an outspoken opponent of Ness and he was becoming a threat. Cormac wanted to be laird. But because Ava saved his two sisters from death, he formed a tentative truce with Ness. Then word came that the King’s men were ambushed and the dowry stolen. Ness needed to keep Ava safe so against her will he sent her to his cousin Sloane. While there, Ava overheard a plot against Ness and took off in the night to be by his side. Good thing she did. The story really picks up here and there is a power struggle between Ness and Cormac. Who will the clan believe? Who will they choose to be their Laird? And what will become of Ava and Ness now that she rode straight into danger? An exciting story surely to satisfy the most ardent of highland story addicts. I do recommend this book. Steam level
