Loved it! Different take on romance than usual.
I really enjoyed this story line. I liked the characters, Gretchen and Callum…and Fraser. Loved the honor, integrity and history. Fiona is so learned in this time period. Very discriptive. Couldn’t wait to get to the end of the story, then didn’t want it to end! Really loved the care of family and the clan. This book has action, jealousy, greed, love, honor and intrigue. Keep them coming,Fiona. Can’t have too many Highlanders.
I received this as a free book ARC from Ms. Faris with no expectations. Was I wrong! But she surprised me with this second chance at love. A strong female lead in a time when the cow or horse were more important. Even though she knows widows & children die in winter she hesitates to move to the castle. He husband’s best friend (Callen) has been in love with Gretchen for years but hesitates to move on it. This is the only wrong note to me. In their time men were not gentle or they wouldn’t survive very long.
Ms. Farris never fails to provide a wonderful love story without being too descriptive in the love scenes.
Please continue to provide the wonderful storylines.
Part of the Scottish Medieval Highlander Romance Novel series it is well written and kept me turning pages. This is Gretchen and Callum’s story there is suspense, drama, danger, and romance. I enjoyed reading this story.
I’m sorry to say this was not my favorite book from Fiona. It took a while to get into the book and it seemed to go very slow. The book is about a first love between Gretchen and Callum. After Gretchen lost her husband Fraser in a fierce battle she cared for Callum while his wounds healed. After a kidnapping they became closer and finally achieved a happy ending. I was pleased with the extended epilogue.
I love Fiona Faris’s work. She is an excellent writer and author. I have read at least ten of her books all with four- or five-star ratings. I anticipated reading this new book with the same satisfaction as the rest. But alas it was not meant to be. I felt the story was somewhat juvenile. The constant “I love you” bantered back and forth between the H/h too many times. I felt there was no real depth to the story and the villain was a predictable man who felt the Lairdship belonged to him. He was not even very creative in trying to usurp the H. The overall story of two friends closer than brothers admiring the same woman. She married one because she was betrothed to him but loved the other. After a while she came to love her husband. After he was killed in action, the H took his place as Laird. He spent as much time as he could with our h. He made love to her over and over again. I was surprised she was not pregnant after months of their affair. It was irritating that it took him forever to ask her to marry him. The story has potential it is just not my favorite Fiona Faris book.
Gretchen was in love with 2 men Frazier, Laird of the Clan Glenbogle and Callum. She marries Frazier and has a daughter with him named Ava. Frazier and Callum go to war stop that stop that stop that against the MacLaren Clan Frazier saves Callum’s life and lost his life in the process. When Clan Glenbogle returned home Gretchen learned that Frazier had been killed and Callum had been wounded badly they thought. Gretchen cared for Callum and he got better soon. The Council of Elders though they mourned the Laird’s death they needed a new Laird for the clan. Various names were put forth that most of the Council thought Callum would be the best choice. But he wasn’t healing fast enough so they canceled the liberated and gathered over who to choose they finally buried Laird Frazier. The Council of Elders met for the 3rd time to make a final decision on which the next Laird would be Sir Dunkin was nominated but because of his reputation was not considered a good choice. Then Gregory stood up and nominated himself in the Council decided he was not a good choice. Then Albert stood and begged to break for a meal and that was approved. Callum realized that he had forgotten to read the scroll the Council of Elders had sent him when he made his presence known Elder Gilbert offered him a seat at the high table. Callum was nominated and elected Laird of the Glenbogle Clan. After time he asked Gretchen to leave her home and come care for his mother and the clan keep and she did so bringing her daughter Ava with her. What happens in the rest of the book Tells the Story of the Clan Glenbogle who tries to kill the Laird who kidnaps Ava and what happens between Callum and Gretchen. It’s a well written book. And it’s a good book…
Another good book by Fiona herself.I loved the story so much and i can’t wait for the next project of hers.
Lots of drama, betrayals, traps, and greed over the change in lairdship, but that did not make up for the two main characters that were missing Ms. Faris’s usual spark.
it was a good read but not one of her best books. I feel a little let down
This book seems like it was written by someone other than Fiona Faris. I had a difficult time forcing myself through 52% of it. There were more errors than I have ever seen in an ARC copy before. There was no steam to the love scenes. The female heroine is a widowed woman with a child but behaves and is treated as though she is an untried and I experienced maiden. Extremely disappointed in this book!
The storyline was so wonderfully written and the characters were written with such great detail and depth that I was totally engaged as I turned each and every page until the very end!
The first marriage was arranged from birth, and the couple grew to love one another after they had a child. There was always that “more than friendly feeling ” between Callum and Gretchen and it continued after Fraser’s death. This was their second chance to have true love!! Lots of drama, betrayals, traps, and greed over the change in lairdship! So many wicked evil people! Callum’s survivor’s guilt was almost insurmountable, and I empathized with him. Merriam was a great source of wisdom and truth for the couple, and her speech brought me to tears. Can this couple survive against all odds? Check it out.
This was not the best book I have read by Ms. Faris primarily because I had a problem with Gretchen’s character. I really didn’t like her very much. Callum was okay but the one I liked the best was Fraser and he was dead!! I would have liked to know more about him. A good book, just not a great one.
