Highlander’s Haunted Past by Adamina Young is a well-plotted with interesting characters that are complex and so believable it feels like you can just reach out and touch them. A wonderful tale that hooks you from the start and keeps you turning the pages. This is a thrilling, edge of your seat story that is full of action, drama, betrayal, steamy romance and suspense with twist and turns. Adamina has a way of grabbing you the first few pages and then you can’t put the book down until the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, from cover to cover. The Extended Epilogue rounds out the story very well.
If you are looking for a romantic Highlander story, this isn’t it. They are apart so much that it is hard to feel a connection when the Queen has him going all over the Country. Then we have his own father who treats him as a hired hand. The H gets very little sleep because he is during the work of the servants.
There are many villains in this story, which seem to be a theme for this author. I’m not saying that is bad, just you have many to choose from throughout. There are a few I thought were bad and I was correct, but my oh my some really will surprise you.
I did enjoy most of the story and that is why I rated it as I did. I didn’t care at all for the Queen. There are some editing problems and once there is a fight scene, where the author confused the good guys with the bad guys fighting. Took me several times to reread a paragraph, to realize she meant the Gordon men were fighting and not the Queens men.
There is lovemaking within marriage. It was hard to feel a connection to them as I’ve stated because even when they are together they are fighting – through about half of the story. Heat level 3.5 out of 5 and it isn’t described for page after page. Also, the Lord’s name is used in vain a couple times.
Just know this author does what seems to be the latest thing. The story ends abruptly and you have to download the extended epilogue. Granted it is free for you, but always makes me wonder if the author’s do this because they get a kick back. So if you don’t download this story, you won’t know what happens to two people and more about the h/H. I’ve said many times, I DISLIKE THIS WITH A PASSION!
We have no cheating, no cliffhanger (if you read the extended epilogue), HEA, no romance and a tad of spice. (ljb)
A Highlander’s Haunted Past by Adamina Young is an exciting tale of the medieval Scots. Kenna is to be married to a man of the queen’s choosing-this because her father followed the lead of his laird who was rebelling. The queen’s guard overtook his castle and put his head on a spike. In order for her brothers to keep their home they had to swear fealty and give a sister in to marriage. Her intended groom, Rob Fraser, is not all that excited with the marriage either. The plot gets a little complicated to explain, although not to read. Suffice it to say, Kenna has a problem staying out of trouble. Her husband’s family stands with her as long as they are able, some of it of her own making.
Young writes an excellent story. The characters run from charming to absolutely evil. Kenna and Rob wear their feelings on sleeves and it is wonderfully enchanting to see each of them grow up. The plot is realistic, in that this period in history is rife with dishonesty and treachery. No one is to be trusted. Many people take care of themselves and themselves alone. This is realistically and excitingly portrayed in A Highlander’s Haunted Past. Family is family and that is an ongoing theme of this novel. One none of us can afford to forget. A good book. I recommend it as well as her others if you have not yet had the opportunity.

Drama Betrayal Treason Conflict Battle Subterfuge Death Attempted Murder Tested Loyalties Suspicion Attempt to Overthrow the Crown Guilty until proven innocent Forced arranged marriage . This story has it all and more. The arranged marriage between Lady Kenna to Laird Rob was between an insult and a compromise for the victory the Queen had over Kenna’s father for treason. It was a rocky rode for Kenna and Rob. Kenna has a strong personality. She is not afraid to speak her mind in whatever manner suits the situation. She is a pillar of strength and has a steel backbone. Rob is a seasoned warrior. A respected leader to his men and an expert trainer. He is heir to the Lairdship and has a younger brother Hugh. Rob proved to be more empathetic to Kenna and that surprised her. He gave her space to get to know him before they consummated their marriage. Day after day Kenna began to realize what a good-hearted man Rob was and she was lucky to have him. As they both traveled with the Queen to another town, trouble started and the Queen automatically pointed the finger at Kenna and tortured her. Because of what Kenna’s father did, the Queen did not trust her and her alliance to her new clan. Word spread through the camp and Kenna was treated to dirty looks and unkind words. Amazingly Rob stood by her side every moment even in front of the Queen declaring her innocence. First there was the business of someone trying to kill the Queen and take over power. But there was another darker motive brewing that neither Rob nor Kenna could ever imagine by those closest to them. An excellent read and I highly recommend it.
I think Kenna won Rob’s men over with the mint leaves and had some faithful allies. I was sick at the queen’s actions on Kenna- so vile and evil it made me ill. The familial betrayals were unimaginable! Kenna was used as a scapegoat and sacrificial lamb. How inhumane! I lost total respect for the queen when she wasn’t big enough to apologize for falsely accusing Kenna when she found the truth of things. Ellen was a miserable evil witch who was responsible for her own fate, but she eagerly tried to sabotage anyone in her way. It was so sweet how everyone fell prey to the babe’s charms. Great read.
Captivating from the beginning! Suspenseful – Betrayal – Arranged Marriage – Romance ~ Adamina Young has done an excellent job in this book. I enjoyed her first book a lot but I believe this one is even better !! Rob and Kenna are wonderful characters. The whole story keeps you wondering what’s going on and who’s doing it and why in the suspenseful way. You think one way and then there are twist and turns and you find out you where wrong. Great read !!
I loved Kenna and Rob’s story. It’s a story of duty, love, deception and betrayal. The story draws you in and you won’t want to put it down. I only hope we get Florence’s story too!
