Great book…grabs you from the start! Wolfram McKay has been summonses by King George
For a secret mission to find a child. Wolf was only given a minimum of details about the child but he, along with his cousin Keir, set off on a long journey to find the child. Along the way they encounter villages left destroyed by the clearances, dangerous bogs and other problems. They come upon a band of travelers which included Lady Swannoc McKinnon, Swan, of Brough Castle, Kaithra, Neely, the old man Beak and 6 children. They were the last remaining survivors of three attacks on Castle Brough. Swan vowed to protect the remainder of her clan as best as she could. She made the decision to take her small group and travel to Fionnghal and the Ross sisters. As they prepared to leave she found a wolfhound dying. She freed him from the wreckage and chains. From that point on Beans became her protector. When they encountered Wolf and Keir, Wolf made the decision to escort them to Fionnghal, then take the three boys back to the king. Can Swan change Wolfs mind about taking the boys or will he do his duty to the king and return the boys to him.

What a great story. A strong woman who would fight to the death for those she loves and a strong man renown all over Scotland as one of the greatest warriors alive. The main characters and the secondary characters are amazing. They were all realistic, wise, fierce and loving. The overall storyline is one that caused the death of hundreds and the destruction of anything in the path of these evil soldiers. They were searching for a boy child supposedly the offspring of one of the two royal leaders in power at that time. The H and his cousin set out to find the boy. Along the way they run into the h who saved them and their horses from the bog. The h was leading the last of her clan to a safer clan. She traveled with two young women, one old kindly man, three young boys and three young girls. After a confrontation, they settled their misunderstandings and traveled together to the H’s clan where he was Laird. There is a lot of drama, danger, fighting and a quick but sweet romance. A must read. I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.
