After plunging back in time to 16th century Scotland, Elena stumbles into a dangerous mystery that threatens her life as much as the handsome guard captain Brendan threatens her heart… reality in a place where women often don’t garner the same respect and the word “witch” is still used an excuse to burn someone at the stake.
Brendan Grant quickly finds himself falling for the feisty, beautiful red-head who came crashing into his world from the future. But when a mysterious illness and then disappearances hit threaten the men of his guard, and all signs point to Elena, he can’t help be wary of the woman who is being accused of being a witch…or worse.
With the clan, and Brendan, looking at her with distrustful eyes, Elena must convince Brandan to trust her, despite how bad things may appear, and use her investigative skills to clear her name.

I’m not really sure exactly how to rate this. It’s supposed to be a time travel but the heroine spends a lot of time in the current time setting the scene that exhibits her skills as a police detective and a good one at that. She is sent to the past and that’s all okay but I’m tired of reading about these skilled women that just turn into helpless ninny’s when they go back in time. I want the heroine to use her skills to improve the lives of the people in her new reality. This didn’t do that. She wasn’t a total loser but it was suddenly like she was less than she was. I realize in that time, women were treated as less but this is fiction. This is a personal peeve of mine and it may not hit anyone else the same way. I’ve been following this author and I’m never “sorry” I read the book but I’m left feeling like it was a good idea that could have been so much better than it was. Decent read, great story idea, my final opinion is that it could be great but was only good. (I voluntarily reviewed an ARC).
Loved this action packed, sexy, fun, emotionally thrilling journey into the past filled with engaging charters, witty dialog, exciting twists and heart racing passion…. was excellent reading! Highly entertaining and hard to put down!

I’ve read the previous 2 books in this series and although they can be read as stand alone books, it helps to have the side character’s stories. They are on KU, so you can read for free with your subscription and I would recommend that. Elena is a modern day police detective working a case in Baltimore Maryland when she is pulled bak in time to 16th century Scotland. Brendan is the Captain of the Guard at Urquhart Castle on the shores of Lock Ness. But there is more the castle and the occupants than meets the eye. Brendan and Elena are well written, interesting characters and the story has some interesting twists and turns along the way. My biggest problem with this book and with the previous 2 is the author just draws out the story way too much. Frankly I skipped chapters, they are just too repetitive. But, if you can get past that, there is a compelling story here.

In order to explain my review, I need to post ** SPOILER ALERT **
I love Scottish time travel novels. I really was looking forward to enjoying this. The transplant of a Baltimore PD Detective to medieval Scotland was ok no problem with that. I felt angry and disappointed in the way the h’s character was revealed. She did an outstanding job as a detective and she knew she was good. She had the instincts, insight, gut reaction to deal with the criminal elements of society. But the story never covered her talents as a detective in Baltimore. Now she was in Scotland. For about three quarters of the book I was totally frustrated with her character. Instead of using her detective training to solve a mysterious occurrence in the area it seemed all her training went out the window. The story never really highlighted any of the skills she had to offer. Such as defensive training. She could have been training the guards how to deal with a perp with hand to hand combat. It mentioned that Anna was training the men in sword fighting so how come Elena could not have been put into a situation like that? Furthermore all the story showed was how idiotic she behaved not using her detective skills at all. It is revealed towards the end that the villain Una had some kind of mind control over her. Okay believable, but my goodness even after she broke out of the hypnotic trance she was in, the author did not incorporate anything to highlight her detective skills to bring the villain to justice. All she did was show her bravery. She used herself as bait. The way Elena was portrayed she could have been anybody. The story did not need her to be a detective. So why make her one? IDK I just felt upset and irritated that Elena’s character could have shined brighter if given a chance. Instead she became a mind-controlled man hating nobody cares for me except Una, it’s is me and her against the world of men and women. Also, there was no romance between Elena and Brendan. It was physical attraction and lust. At the end they declared their love for each other. Hello?? There is no story there. I have read three of Rebecca Preston’s previous books and there is no consistency in the quality of her work. One was a five star; one was a one star and one was a three star. Like I said no consistency. I do not recommend this book. Don’t waste your time.
A well written story with nice storyline and plot. It is easy to read and captivating. The author has done her research and I like that very much.
Characters well described and defined. Their chemistry is flowing of the pages. I like time travel stories – mostly when they are going back in time. This is absolute enjoyable.
It is nice that we meet the women from earlier stories. A kind of catch up.
A lot of twists and turns, dark thoughts, death, illness and mystery is mixed into this story. The couple has to go through a lot before they can have their HEA.
I love the whole atmosphere of this series. 16th Century Scotland is a fantastic period. The castles, highlanders, superstitions and myths, appeal enormously to my imagination. This book does not disappoint. Brendan has been my favourite member of the clan from the very beginning, he’s witty, sarcastic, and tries not to take himself too seriously. Elena is more than a match for him. Great story, beautifully written and constructed, I devoured this book.

Dragged into the past when something went wrong during a mission, Elena found herself in a difficult and dangerous situation. As a policewoman, she had an agile, sagacious and deductive mind but none of that was helping her when it came to face a threat from the past that put her life and that of others at risk. A situation she had never imagined and that absorbed her mind. I liked that Brendan had his mind in place and was not clouded by the attraction he felt. I enjoyed the story that had suspense, intrigue, deception, a strange Paranormal, romance, passion and much mystery.
I love emerging myself into 16th century Scotland and read about the magical side of it, as written by Rebecca Preston. Time travel, the Fae, the good and the evil, Loch Ness’ Nessie….it makes for quite an entertaining and magic filled hours of reading!
Elena is from the present time and is a detective who is investigating a couple of murders when she falls through some stairs and suddenly finds herself in 16th century Scotland. There she meets two other women like her (from books 1 & 2), as well as the Captain of the Guards, Brendan, with whom she instantly feels an attraction to. Unfortunately, with a disease spreading that is felling only the men, trust not being freely given and a dark presence that is messing with Elena’s mind, she finds herself fighting for her life. With a few twists and turns, the story will keep you wanting to read more.

I enjoyed this book. Elena and Brendan’s story was easy to read and held my attention well. I liked both characters and I thought that they made a good pair. The story was fun and exciting.
