To others, he’s a misfit. To her, he’s a hero.Daniel Drummond fears no lass will want a one-handed warrior, but when he meets the bonny and spirited Constance at Sona Abbey, he dares to wonder if they could have a future together. The beautiful novice has a secret, however, and her reticence makes him fear she sees him as less than a man. Eager to forget her, Daniel throws himself into the Band’s … himself into the Band’s mission to find and stop the underground kidnappers who ship lads and lasses across the waters.
Constance loves Daniel, but she dares not tell him the truth about her background. Her sire sent her running from home, and she fears becoming a nun is the only way she can keep herself and the people she loves safe. Except the abbey isn’t as safe as she hoped, and she soon finds herself on the run from multiple pursuers.
Daniel throws himself into an undercover mission, little expecting it will lead him straight back to the lass he loves, but do he and Constance have the fortitude to overcome the obstacles between them?

I loved the idea that the lead character had to deal with an unusual handicap. It led to a different challenge in an approach to life. As a mental health therapist I appreciated how the writer developed the character showing how this affected him growing up in life .
She aptly portrayed how it affected his perception of self and how he felt viewed by others. Terrific love story and concept!!
Continuing with the interlinked highland families, this one has a damaged hero who has lost an arm as a child, but he still manages to safe his lady fair, fight human traffickers, and stand up to her often bullying father.
Highland Fortitude by Keira Montclair
Band of Cousins Series Book Five
Daniel Drummond has worked hard to be a warrior—even if he’s only a one-handed one. He’d felt confident and strong once he decided to accept the loss of that appendage. Until the day he lost that confidence. Thought having one hand made him less…unable to protect those he cared for.
Constance was still at the abbey, even after her friend Rose had married and left. Rose had invited her to come to Grant Castle with her, but…she had secrets. Secrets that she had to keep to herself and she had to stay hidden. Not put her friends in the path of danger. And that included keeping Daniel safe. Even though her heart wished for so much more.
The Band of Cousins has dwindled a bit as they slowly are getting married off. But the trouble is still real. There is still a Channel of Dubh that is stealing young lasses to ship out of Scotland. So, the cousins that could still were fighting the battle. They had to find out who’s behind it all and stop this human trade. Every one they took out, helped—but it needed to end.

Ms Montclair has done it again. Another excellent read. It has all you need in a good medieval read, romance, action, suspense. As usual the characters are well developed and the story well thought out and easy to follow. I enjoy these books because they are not full of fillers, just the story. Although this is part of a series about finding a cruel group of people stealing children, you can read each book as a stand alone but once you have read one, you will want to read the rest as it is like reading about your family. You get to know each of the very much extended family a little more each book. Another book you can’t go wrong with. I received this as an ARC.
Another winner from Keira Montclair! I loved Daniel and Constance as a couple – how they matured and their love grew. We are getting so close to finding the evil people kidnapping the lads and lasses to sell for profit. This is such a great new tale in the Band of Cousins Series and I am really looking forward to the next adventure. I was gifted this ARC and have voluntarily given my opinion of the book – I highly recommend this book and the whole series for your enjoyment!
Once you enter Montclair ‘s Highland world, you will be hooked.
I think this is the first time I read an historical romance where the hero is so young, only 17, but he does come across much older in the story. I really enjoyed reading this book and even though the H and h aren’t together for more than half the story, it was still interesting to read what they were up to while apart.
This story includes a one handed hero, a spirited heroine, secrets, lies, danger and a passion between 2 people who are most definitely meant for each other. The way is long before they can find their HEA, though, and while Daniel joins a fighting club to learn more about the group who kidnaps and sells young people, Constance is on the run from 3 groups of men who are after her.
Well written, kept my interest and since I haven’t read all of the previous books in this series, I will now make sure I do.
This story is intense and action-packed. The characters are wonderful, but very immature, given their age that is to be expected. There’s a maturity to him wanting to marry Constance, but he fails to find out the reason. Like all young men, he assumes it is because he is one-handed. My one problem with the story is that Daniel thinks like a mature warrior, yet he is only 17 years old. If it wasn’t for the ages that the author used, I would have given it 5 stars. Daniel’s maturity was out of character for his age. We watch Constance grow as she learns that running from her problems is not the answer, and standing for what she believes and wants will get her a long way down the road. I liked these two together.
I have read all her series starting with Alec & Maddie (Clan Grant). The Band of Cousins series with Highland Fortitude being #5 continues with what came before and the Character’s and continuity makes you feel like you are one of the family. I love her Highlanders both the leading lady & the leading man, add great tales that are always interesting and you have a very enjoyable read.
4.25 STARS
I have really enjoyed this series. I haven’t read them all, they are stand alone stories. As with many series, there are cross over character’s and this one has many. I feel you would enjoy if you read the series, plus it is amazing.
This story has the couple apart a lot, so little on romance. The H is missing his hand and he misreads the h wanting to go back to the Abbey. This story has a lot of misunderstandings and secrets. I did understand the h’s reason for her secret. If they would have been honest with each other, their lives would be simpler.
Near the end when so many enemies appear at the exact same time, I thought was far fetched.
There is lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 3.5 out of 5 and briefly described. Then once within marriage, heat level 3 out of 5.
The h’s bold actions after the battle I thought was out of character and all the H’s relatives back off, didn’t ring true to me.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, little on romance because apart a lot, and steam. Have suspense, twists, touch of paranormal (which I loved) and a unique series. Little on editing issues. (ljb)
All of Keira Montclair’s books are wonderful, great characters, interesting plots, and all are page turners!
Good and sad story. Daniel is afraid no woman will want him as a one handed warrior. So while he and his band of cousins are out to rescue children stolen for sex slaves or worse he meets Constance at the abbey. But her secrets keep her quiet and Daniel thinks that’s because he’s disabled by the hand missing and leaves and trys to forget about her. But she’s there to get away from her father and trying to protect her people. Will they get back together. Pretty good story.

Kiera Montclair is one of my very favorite authors and never fails to deliver, and this one is no different. I have read every one of her books and cannot wait for the next one. Start with Alex and Maddie’s book and read them all, you won’t be disappointed.
Highlands of Scotland, 1284 Keira Montclair expertly combines historical knowledge with romance and intrigue in this amazing story! Having found Constance, with several others, while tracking a network of brigands who sold women to far places, Daniel just could not leave her at the nunnery she wished to join. They had spent time together and his affections had grown to the point of love. But she had some secrets and needed to stay hidden so does not go with him even though he declares himself!
I truly loved these two characters and could almost feel their emotions coming through the pages. Daniel is self conscious due to the loss of one hand and feels she may not want him due to his disability. Constance fears her secret will harm those she cares about and needs to stay hidden.
Prepare to be glued to the pages with this tale that has all the ingredients needed for a perfect historical romance!
Suspense, secrets, romance and of course cruel people determined to get what they wanted!
Although part of a series, this can be read as a standalone, but trust me, you will want to read them all!! Well done!
