This one really had me going! I was angry for Catriona and sad for her at the same time. I wanted to do something violent to her brother and his friends.
Rory was somehow in the middle–but I was routing for him most of the time!! Of course it took him a bit to realize that Catriona was not who he thought she was!
Catriona’s godmother and Rory’s aunt was a dear sweet woman–but did she ever know how to get things done!!
This one really got my emotions going and I loved every second of it!!
Meh. Dunn admits this started as a NaNoWriMo and didn’t finish it in time. Sadly it reads exactly like that. Paper cut out characters with no drive or motivation for their actions. The plot’s premise was good, the characters just didn’t stand out or help complete it.
This story swept me off my feet. An epic historical romance full of smuggling and glittering caves with dangerous redcoats lurking around every corner. I was bewitched and lapped it up, desperate to see what happened to Catriona and Rory. There are some loathsome characters; Angus and John keep the suspense going right until the very end, but that threat is balanced by the sweet relationship between Auntie Meg and Catriona which I found, at times, really moving. It was also interesting to learn about the history of the period and I particularly enjoyed the court scenes in Edinburgh which were peppered with lots of lovely details. Can’t wait to read more of the Highland Chronicles.
This book will make you happy, angry and hopeful. The one awful character will have you wishing he would get a dose of his own medicine and will make you want to keep reading to make sure it happens. Good read.
I love this series, hard to put down. Characters are interesting. Story line is a nice change, as the women actually are strong females.
Good book
The author did a fantastic job of researching the time period for this setting. Loved that! Plot-wise, everything did great up until about halfway through the book…and then there was no more suspense or tension. Things continued to happen, adding story, but there was no build-up for it.
I like it
I actually quit reading this book about 40% in. I feel like I read this type of book before….
Enjoyed this book very much! I enjoy reading about this time period in Scotland!
I liked the vivid description of the hi lands and fast story.
The hero had to be rescued. The heroine was frustrating, and of course she had to be rescued. The book was disappointing.

I’ve not previously read any of Cathie Dunn’s work but, I was attracted by the Highland Arms book cover, so I purchased the book to give it a whirl.
I love Cathie’s gift of setting the scene with the perfect amount of vivid description that makes you feel your there in the story. I liked all the characters but I was sad there wasn’t more storyline with old lady Meg. I kept imagining twist and turns that involved her but sadly nothing more came of her. The only other thing that I didn’t like was Catriona’s behavior. She was written as a strong character having to constantly cover up for her brother who ill treated her at every turn. She endured his constant needling calling her a strumpet in front of others and falsely ruining her reputation and life but she didn’t cry. However, she cried through every scene there after. I would have put her as sterner stuff through most of it and cry through the worst of it. I would like to read more from this author.
