“The world-building was phenomenal. It reminded me of the first time I read other classic fantasy series like Harry Potter…” Long and Short Reviews 4.5/5 stars “HIGH SUMMONS reads like a young Harry Dresden with the same wit and charm…A must-read for lovers of urban fantasy!” – Reader’s Favorite 5/5 stars What price would you pay for magic? Born with magic, Jon never asked the cost. His dad …
Born with magic, Jon never asked the cost. His dad vanished. Monsters lurked in the dark, waiting for him to notice, but as long as he kept his eyes forward, as long ad he pretended to be a normal human, they forgot he was even there. Until they didn’t.
Ruthless rogue wizards and hordes of demons flood the city. Put in the cross-hairs of a demon hunter, Jon jumps at the chance to apprentice, but the demon hunter, Jordan, didn’t show up by chance. He’s got his own agenda in Rochester, and dealing with a group of rogues desperate enough to set the city ablaze is just the beginning.
Wild nights drag Jon deeper into the world where his father vanished. Maybe he’s becoming an addict.
Maybe magic just comes with a price. Either way, he’s hooked.

I love the tagline of this book: “Rogues, midterms, demons—just normal university problems.”
This is a story about a guy named Jon who is half-magic and finds himself apprenticed to a demon-hunting wizard. It’s a pretty dark subject overall, yet entertaining with lots of battles and spells and grisly creatures. Although it’s not my favorite reading genre (I usually avoid stories about angels and demons, since the portrayal is often far from reality), I try to look at these stories simply as embellished tales with the author using her imagination to create an alternate world. This prevents me from thinking things like, “An angel/God/demon would never do THAT!”
The novel could’ve used more editing (errors like stationary instead of stationery, laid for lay, and a general lack of necessary commas), but the descriptions of the demons were well done and created perfectly creepy visual images. I really liked Jon’s voice. He was clever and amusing and had a fun way of speaking/thinking that kept me reading. I was anxious as Jon was to get past all the lengthy teaching and just jump into the action and start doing things.
Bottom line: You can enjoy this novel if you don’t expect it to make sense in the traditional view of angels and demons. It was an imaginative read with interesting fabrications and a compelling main character.
A Fun read.
I love stories about the paranormal world. This one has a wonderful balance of humor, action and surprise. I highly recommend fantasy fans to read it.
This is book one of the Warlock of Rochester series and the main character is eighteen year old Jon, who was born with magic, but can only really do parlour tricks, as he has never had anyone train him. His father left when he was young and there is only him and his mother. He has seen monsters since he can remember and his mother knows about magic from his father. But these monsters were actually lots of different types of demons. His father left him with an amulet, which he wears all the time and has made him practically invisible to any demon that may wish him harm. He loves to play with his magic, but has to make sure no one else sees him using it. He has never met anyone else that can use magic and believes himself all alone in that aspect.
Everything changes, when he is drawn to an old looking bookstore in a part of town he wouldn’t normally frequent, and he meets a young man called Jordan, who seems just a few years older than him, but can use magic easily and has a great deal more power and control than Jon. He even knew his father! Jordan is only in town to do a job, as he is a demon hunter, dealing with a number of rogue wizards and hordes of demons. Jon begs to be trained by Jordan, but will soon learn that there is a price to pay for the magic he was born with and he has a huge decision to make about his future. He is in his first semester at college, but he may have to give all of that up and become a demon hunter, or give up his magic altogether!
He ends up working with Jordan in his task to stop a group of rogue magic users, who want to summon a powerful demon, which may end up with the city he lives in being destroyed and mankind overcome. Souls are all part of the price and targeting voids are the only part of a demon that ensures they are destroyed. Jon must learn on the fly, from someone who isn’t happy to really be his mentor, but will allow him to learn until he makes a decision. But the demons are now on his trail as well, due to his proximity to Jordan. Three rogues need to become five, for their summoning plans to work and souls will need to be sacrificed to the devil! Jon finds himself busy with Jordan and the task of saving the city, whilst also attending classes and learning so much about all the different types of demons and how to defeat them.
An interesting read and one that deals with a young man who has had to keep his magic ability hidden, who knows so little about his own father, but must now make a decision that will affect the rest of his life and the future he will have or not! So many different demons and types of characters to face off against. Some you could almost feel sorry for and I’m sure there is more to Jordan than we have learnt as yet, in this first book. I look forward to reading the next books in the series, as soon as possible, to see what Jon gets up to next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
His father has disappeared and he keeps his magic hidden as the monsters will come after him. He tries to keep looking forward. What will happen when the mister finally see him? What will he do? See if he can fight them

I really liked this story. It was fun to read as Jon deals with the normal college stuff and that pesky magic he has. He ends up becoming an apprentice to a demon hunting wizard just as the city he lives in goes crazy. It was both entertaining and a bit spooky but it was so much fun to read as it was full of action and adventure. It was easy to read and follow what was going on and easy to imagine it all. It was a good read and a I need to see what happens next.
The writing could be better.
