The murder of a notorious public figure places police chief Jesse Stone in the harsh glare of the media spotlight in this New York Times bestseller. When the body of controversial talk-show host Walton Weeks is discovered hanging from a tree on the outskirts of Paradise, Massachusetts, police chief Jesse Stone finds himself at the center of a highly public case, forcing him to deal with … him to deal with small-minded local officials and national media scrutiny. When another dead body-that of a young woman-is discovered just a few days later, the pressure becomes almost unbearable.
Two victims in less than a week should provide a host of clues, but all Jesse runs into are dead ends. But what may be the most disturbing aspect of these murders is the fact that no one seems to care-not a single one of Weeks’s ex-wives, not the family of the girl. And when the medical examiner reveals a heartbreaking link between the two departed souls, the mystery only deepens.
Despite Weeks’s reputation and the girl’s tender age, Jesse is hard-pressed to find legitimate suspects. Though the crimes are perhaps the most gruesome Jesse has ever witnessed, it is the malevolence behind them that makes them all the more frightening. Forced to delve into a world of stormy relationships, Jesse soon comes to realize that knowing whom he can trust is indeed a matter of life and death.

Typical “who done it” with some humorless dialogue.
This is an excellent addition to the Paradise collection. The author has captured the essence of Parker’s Paradise works and has created an interesting work.
Good book but not Parker’s best. Still a fun read, I always enjoy Jesse Stone’s books. All of Parker’s books have fun characters and great dialogue.
Robert B. Parker always gets five stars. His less-than-perfect books (this is not one of them) far outshine the best that Authors A, B, and 3 have to offer.
The characters are you or people you know.
Witty dialogue, as usual. A favorite author.
I was not in love with the main character. Too bad because I was looking for a new series to read.
Back story getting a little old.
I enjoy the Jesse Stone series, but I found his sappy devotion for his cheating narcissistic wife a little more difficult to stomach in this particular book. His ex-wife is a lost cause. I expect Jesse to have a little more backbone.
I see Tom S saying every word. Makes the story even better.
love all of these books
I’ve loved Parker’s writing since his first book (when he was teaching college and writing part-time). However, Jesse Stone and his relationship with his ex-wife are my least favorite sub-plot of any novel series I read.
Not one of Parker’s best.
being an ex bostonian i like the places in the book that i know.
I really did not like this book very much. I found the story like fairly good but I did not like the language.
I love all of Parker’s books. I love the main character. I love the humor in the book.
Great author….always a great read.
Love all Robert Parker books, including this one. The dialog is witty and makes for a fun read.
Great story
I love the Jessie Stone series. Robert Parker was an awesome author!
