I tend to gravitate toward fiction where the main characters are forced to confront certain difficult topics while emotions run high. When I read the official review for this book on Online Book Club, I was immediately drawn to it.
Grace has come to Penrowan to finally come clean with a secret that she has kept hidden for two decades: she has a daughter—whom she quietly gave up for adoption—by her best friend Sam. Sam is married to Dixie, and he was dating Dixie at the time of his tryst with Grace. Dixie has always harbored jealousy of Grace, even though the two women are friends, so this news is sure to destroy everyone involved.
The thing is, when she arrives, she cannot muster the courage to divulge her secret right away. Each time she has an opening, she changes the subject. Her openings are becoming fewer as the days leading up to the birthday party that Sam and Dixie are hosting for Grace draw nearer.
In the midst of everything, Grace gravitates toward Sam and Dixie’s 25-year-old gardener. Although he is almost two decades younger than everyone else, he is often the voice of reason, rescuing all of the older adults from themselves. He is the most loveable character by far. As for the other characters, you will have a love-hate relationship with them. Their overreactive emotions can be irksome, but with secrets of this magnitude, I really wouldn’t expect anything else.
This story is not a romance, despite how it has been marketed. It would be better classified as women’s fiction. There are a few quick, steamy scenes, but the theme is not one of romance.
The author chose to break up the chapters into many sections, with each section being given from a different character’s point of view. Sometimes, the breaks in chapters and sections seemed to have no rhyme or reason in their placement. Aside from this, the story was well-constructed, though the conclusion could have been a little more developed; the ending felt a bit rushed after how much time was spent building up to it.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was a quick read with memorable characters.
I would like to thank Online Book Club and Book Sirens for introducing me to this author. I received a free Kindle ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received an ARC from BookSirens for an honest review. This was the perfect title when I found out the reason for the title. Grace is about to turn 40 and boy does she have a lot going on in her life. As I read the book, It was watching her life unravel but being put back together at the same time. I really enjoy books like this.
There were times a few tears were shed, and times I hoped that it would work out in a certain way. It did but not the way I thought which was wonderful.
There were many things going on in the book but it was so well written that it was easy to follow and I always had high hopes and wasn’t disappointed. It is a wonderful book to read and it takes you to a different country that gives you a great understanding of not only what the country is like but what the culture is like.
This is the first book I’ve read by Sue Lilley and I liked it. I didn’t have any idea what was going to happen, so, of course, that kept me flipping the pages, lol.. I had to see who Grace was going to end up with, especially after her secret comes out. I won’t leave any spoilers, but I will say if you enjoy books about loving friends and family, you will enjoy this book.
I’m conflicted over how to write this review… When I first started it I was about 20% in and I was so utterly confused. I had the jist of what was going on but it kind of seemed all over the place at the same time making it hard to follow.
Grace is turning 40 but there were so many times through this entire read that she seemed like she was only half that age. Her best friend is Sam who’s married to her other friend. Sam and Grace had a child who Grace gave up for adoption and is now wanting to get in touch with her biological parents. But Sam has no clue about the baby.
I will say Grace not telling Sam the truth and the fact that is why she’s back in town is what kept me reading I wanted to see how everyone was going to take it. And throughout the story, some more secrets were brought to the surface.
All in all, it was a good story line but wasn’t one that I loved. And I can’t even say that I loved the characters. I did like how the author Sue Lilley gave points of view from every character, but that was also another thing that tripped me up. She would change the character POV without any warning making me have to go back and figure out where the switch happened.
