I will never betray him.
So sit tight.
On Devil’s Night, the hunt will be coming to you.
KAI
You have no idea what I seek, Little One. You don’t know what I had to become to survive three years in prison for a crime I would gladly commit again.
No one can know what I’ve turned into.
I want that hotel, I want to find him, and I want this over.
I want my life back.
But the more I’m around you, the more I realize this new me is exactly who I was meant to be.
So come on, kid. Don’t chicken out. My house is on the hill. So many ways in, and good luck finding your way out.
I’ve seen your hideaway. Time to see mine.
*Hideaway is a romantic suspense suitable for ages 18+. While the romance is a stand-alone, the plot is a continuation of events that began in CORRUPT (Devil’s Night, #1). It is strongly recommended that you have read Corrupt prior to reading this.

For fans of dark romance.
All I can say is that Pen Douglas never disappoints. She writes the most complicated characters I’ve ever come across in romance, and whenever I’m in a book slump, she’s the one to pull me out of it. The voice of her characters are always so compelling and intriguing. She writes flawed characters, my favourite kind, and she creates the most balanced gray area so I’m rooting for them. I’ve yet to come across another writer in dark romance who gets that balance so perfect. The psychology, the pace of the writing, the heat of the romance and the suspense are all fantastic. Moreover, her heroines have their vulnerabilities but they’re so brilliantly strong and fierce. Nik Banks is no exception. For me, Pen Douglas is without a doubt one of the most talented writers out there. This series is a MUST READ.
Rating: 4.5/5
If you’re reading this review, I’m gonna assume that you’ve survived Corrupt (Devil’s Night, #1) and now you’re either; A) comparing notes to your own reading experience or B) you’re like me and hesitant to start, wondering if book two will be as rough (PUN ABSOLUTELY INTENDED) as book one.
I’ll skip the part where I shout at you about how dark this series is and how pretty much every trigger warning you could think of is in it. If you’ve read the first installment, then YOU KNOW. And while this is still very dark and contains a lot of trigger warning-y themes, I had such a better reading experience with Hideaway! I spent about 90% of the last book pissed the hell off and frustrated for Rika. But this book had waaaaay less outright f**kery and was more focused on the mystery of everything. I had so much fun trying to guess what was going to happen next and being completely wrong every time. It was so unpredictable and I loved every second.
And the romance bits! UGH. So good. Officially in love with Kai ya’ll.
Before this, I was already on board for this series because I wanted to see what happens, but now I’m 100% HERE FOR THIS SERIES AND COMPLETELY OBSESSED. I NEED ANSWERS. I can’t wait to start Damon’s book next, it’s gonna be WILD.
~FINAL WORD~
If you even remotely enjoyed the crazy ride of the first book, then READ THIS ONE. NOW. DO IT.
I adore Banks! My favorite aspect of her story is watching her discover who she is outside of her circumstances and family. Being sheltered her entire life, while necessary and painful, never stunted who she truly is as a character. She’s self-sufficient, loyal, has a low threshold for bullshit, and is resilient AF. She is a perfect addition to the Devil’s Night crew, and I loved how Pen wrote her in. It’s not a soft transition. Her inclusion in the group is gritty, but most importantly, it felt incredibly organic and real. Her fit is flawless in the group and with Kia.
There are so many facets that make up the character Kai Mori. However, what drew me to him is his internal struggle between who he wants to be and who he feels he should be. I loved how Pen weaved his deep sense of honor and loyalty into his family and their heritage. Experiencing that internal struggle with him made me appreciate his outburst of violence, anger, and plays that much more intense.
Kai with Banks, though, was almost too much. I love the flashbacks to when they first met and the flash-forwards to where they are now. The consistency between their emotions and feelings made reading their stories seamless. Kia has always known what he wants, and that is her. His patience and persistence in pursuing her are downright sexy! Their time together is
Kai and Banks are definitely one of my top favorite Devil’s Night couples!
I can’t get enough of this series. I love the characters, how twisted and warped they are. I love the games that they play. And I love the ride that Penelope Douglas takes me on every single time I read one of her books. Her writing is flawless, the way she engages the reader and draws you into the story is unrivaled, and her storylines are unique and captivating.
I cannot wait for Kill Switch!!
There was a lot of twists and turns to this book. As soon as I thought I had the book so.ewhat figured out, Ms. Douglas hits me with a surprise!! Especially the ending!!! Can’t wait for #KillSwitch
My highly anticipated book is here! I have been so anxious for this book to release. I love a good dark romance and this series is some serious book crack for me.
Kai and Banks have a different sort of relationship. It’s one I wasn’t really expecting, both good and bad, and yet this seemed to fit them very well. It did take me a bit to get invested in the story but once it hit I was hooked. This is defiantly not Corrupt 2.0 and I am very grateful for that. I don’t really care for it when the next book is almost a carbon copy of the first one. I love that this one surprised me so much and was more than I expected.
There is so much going on and I think so much being set up for the next book. This felt like a book and a half almost. Sometimes that is both good and bad. Good because it’s like a bonus but yet it’s bad because it feels like that stuff over shadowed the current main person’s book. I’m still a bit on the fence to how I feel about it. I do love who it’s for but then again I love Kai too.
Over all I loved this book so hard and it was exceptional and worth the wait. I am dying for the next release and I hope it’s the brutal torture and angst I’m expecting it to be! I love these characters so much.
GAH!!! Penelope Douglas has done it again! Dare I say this novel is even better than CORRUPT (Devil’s Night #1)?!?! I did NOT think that was possible! The horsemen are back and they are ready to play! I tried to savor this book as slowly as possible, but it was IMPOSSIBLE to resist once it landed on my kindle. HIDEAWAY has been a long time coming and it was WORTH EVERY TORTUROUS DAY WE HAD TO WAIT! You can NOT rush this type of perfection! I knew that Kai’s story was going to blow my ever loving mind, but I was NOT prepared in the least for just how much! Kai was every bit as delectable and possessive as I had hoped he would be! And Banks is the quintessential counterpart for Kai and they completely make sense. Their story exceeding ALL my hopes and dreams!
Penelope Douglas has truly outdone herself! Just like CORRUPT, HIDEAWAY is told in dual POV’s and contains both past and present chapters and I swear because of those back and forth chapters, it made me even more hyperaware…every chapter, heck, every encounter had my fingers tingling and my heart racing! Much like Kai and Banks, I was craving the next rush. The suspense was top notch and completely addictive! I literally could feel the adrenaline running through my body while reading! This has been on my list of “highly anticipated novels” since finishing CORRUPT back in Jan 2016 and I was just as consumed by this story (and these characters) as I was with CORRUPT. The outside world did not exist to me once I started reading. I lived and breathed this story like it was my last meal.
The chase. The games. The secrets. The mystery. The stolen moments. The twists. The revelations. The attraction. The push and pull. EVERYTHING was written out to perfection and was flawlessly executed. The whole book you’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop and when it does, boy oh boy, you do not see it coming. I am dying for book 3, KILLSWITCH, which is anticipated to come out sometime in 2018. Just the thought of it sends endorphins through my system. I can’t wait to see where Penelope takes this series. I have no doubt it will be genius. If you have not started this series, DO IT NOW! I promise, you will love it!
AUTHORS NOTE: While the romance in HIDEAWAY is a stand-alone, the plot is a continuation of events that began in CORRUPT (Devil’s Night #1). It is strongly recommended that you read CORRUPT prior to reading this novel.

5 stars!
” . ‘ . .”
: new adult, dark romance, interracial couple, brother’s bestfriend, forbidden, steamy read
I was very hesitant to read this one, but as always Penelope has a way to captivate your attention from the very beginning to the last and this was no exception!!
This time, it’s Kai and Banks’ story. Both characters are damaged in their own way, more Banks than Kai, but the great thing about this story, is seeing how good they are to each other and the insane chemistry they have. Switching past and present timeline, we get to see how these two met and why they stayed away from each other all these years.
Ngl, Banks is definitely the star of this story. Besides how innocent she is, she is strong, bold and resilient, fighting in a world filled with men in power, to prove she is worthy to be appreciated. And oh man, she is quite a character!! I am head over heels with her and It will be hard for me to get over her
Meanwhile, Kai Mori is the most “normal” horsemen member. Yes, he is also damaged like all of them, but I think he is the one who acted as any normal man would do. I like he is half asian and learning more of his culture, but I felt his story had some gaps that should have been well explained as his family dynamics and him standing up for his dream. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like him, in fact I really appreciated how loyal he is to Banks.
But to me, the real star of this book is Damon. I think book one introduced him as a character, but on this one, we get to see glimpses of his past. I think it was a great way to introduce his story, which I cannot wait to get into his mind and understand him as a character.
Overall, this was such an entertaining story with all the good stuff, including the steamiest scenes ever (Pen knows how to write hot stuff )!! Highly recommended!
Honestly it was tad better than Corrupt.
Characters were a little more better, their purpose clear- Hunt Damon, who BTW was stealth bomber cause he was the invisible man!!
There’s absolutely no doubt about pen’s talent. This being her early work, I’ll cut some slack.
Also I’m in the minority who liked this book but didn’t love it
Audio Narrators were magnificent tho.
Kai Mori was one of my favorite characters in Corrupt so I was looking forward to his story and I wasn’t disappointed. One thing that surprised me about this book is that I didn’t think it was nearly as hot as Rika and Michael’s story. Kai is the broody alpha type and clearly has some kinks, if you recall the sauna scene. This book even started with him talking about how he likes to watch so I expected things to be even steamier but found it tamer than the previous story.
Regardless, I still enjoyed Kai’s book immensely. It covered his complex relationship with his parents and the trials of his new life after prison, then threw in a mysterious woman from his past and a few new curveballs. Kai obviously regrets going to prison but has no remorse for his crime. He and Will are convicted felons, having savagely beaten a police officer but all isn’t what it seems. While they looked like two out-of-control thugs to the world, in reality they were attacking a predator with no conscience and Kai wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.
“You don’t know what I had to become to survive three years in prison for a crime I would gladly commit again.”
Damon has been in hiding since the events on the Pithom at the end of Corrupt about a year before this story begins. The four friends are on alert since he’s the sole remaining threat to Rika but Kai needs to find him and the others have no idea why. Kai carries a dark secret, one he’s never shared with Michael or Will but Damon knows. Even worse, Damon has the leverage to destroy his former friend. While the other three would be content so long as he stayed away, Kai’s willing to do whatever it takes to mitigate the threat posed by his former friend.
Kai visits Damon’s father in an effort to find him and offers to strike a deal assuring his former friend’s safety in exchange for his cooperation. He offers to purchase an abandoned hotel in the hopes that Damon’s hiding out there but nothing about this will be easy. While there, they meet his assistant, a woman named Banks, but can’t determine her true role in Gabriel Torrance’s criminal empire.
“I locked my jaw and raised a hard look to Gabriel . . . Given all my resentment of Damon Torrance – how he’d tried to kill me last year, how he betrayed Will and Michael, and how he’d tried to hurt Rika – I’d never failed to remember what a true monster looked like.”
Banks and Kai are forced to work closely due to the specifics of his deal with Gabriel and we soon learn the two have a history that started seven years ago. The sexual tension between the two is almost overshadowed by the overall tension of Damon lurking out there, a constant threat. Like the prior book, the actions takes place both now and in flashbacks to the horsemen’s high school days. We also get Banks’ POV, which is fantastic. She’s a complex character, tough as nails yet beholden to Gabriel despite him treating her dreadfully. Banks’ whole life has been at the mercy of people unworthy of her, from her strung-out neglectful mother to Gabriel’s ownership and his unwavering insistence that women are useless possessions. Her heartbreaking backstory that will make you loathe the villains in this story even more but her pain also gives us an opportunity to see the goodness in Kai, in the way he strives to make her life better without expecting anything in return.
Damon is a main character in this book despite his absence, playing critical roles in both the past and present. I wasn’t a big Damon fan in the first book and this book made me loathe him. His backstory is revealed here as well and while most fans seem to find sympathy and love for this damaged man-boy, I’d prefer he was killed off because I see no redeeming qualities in him, nothing humanizing about him, no reason that the others should care. I’m definitely in the minority though because Damon’s sad story has made him a huge fan favorite, especially with readers critical of Kai and Michael, which I find shocking. I love both characters and have no interest in more Damon but will read his book only because I want to finish the series.
I’d much rather Damon was killed off and Alex got her own book. That’s not going to happen but at least this lays the groundwork for how Damon became the monster he is today. We do get a lot more Alex in this book than the last, which I love and hope to see it continue through the remainder of the series. This was a great read, very different from the first in some ways but still a riveting story with compelling characters and I’ll probably read it again.
Penelope Douglas is one of my favorite authors and I have been waiting for ‘Hideaway’ since I finished the first book of the Devil’s Night series ‘Corrupt’. And all I can say is, it was worth the wait. I finished ‘Hideaway’ the day after the release day, which was 11 days ago but I was having a hard time to write this review because firstly I don’t want to spoil the book for the people who still haven’t read and secondly I wasn’t sure if I was able to write something that will make justice to the book. I am still not sure but here I go
For the people, who haven’t read the first book, let me give you guys a little back-story. Michael, Kai, Will and Damon, who are also known as the Horsemen, ruled Thunder Bay. Every year in Devil’s Night, which is the night before Halloween, the Horsemen pulls different pranks and do whatever they wish. Everyone knows who are behind the masks but no one will do anything to stop them. After they graduated from high school and went to different universities, the Horsemen comes back to Thunder Bay for the Devil’s Night but something goes wrong and Kai, Will and Damon gets arrested. Michael blames Rika for what went down on that night. ‘Corrupt’ tells past and present story about what happened that night and what happens after they are released from prison.
Just like ‘Corrupt’, ‘Hideaway’ is written back and forth between the past and the present. As someone who doesn’t really enjoy switching back and forth between past and present, I really enjoyed both stories and I think this is mainly because of Penelope Douglas’s writing style. Every time, you read something related to past you realize the reasons behind the behaviors and the events of present. The best part is you are not lost between past and present. ‘Hideaway’ is written from dual POV, gives us more chance to see depth and inner struggles of the characters.
Kai, Michael and Will still trying to get over Damon’s betrayal and also trying to figure out where he is and what will be his next move. With the addition of Rika and Alex to the group, you see how far and how little they moved on. The dynamics and the priorities of the group have changed but they still cannot let go of the past. When they decide to go to Damon’s father in the hopes of finding Damon so that they can move on but instead of finding Damon, after years they meet with Banks once again.
Kai Mori is the planner. He is quiet, observant and reserved. Even when he is not wearing his silver mask, he doesn’t allow people to see the real Kai, not even his closest friends. What I loved about Kai the most is how honorable, he is. His inner struggle with shame and disappointment he caused to his father was touching. As for Banks, she is smart, loyal and sassy. The mind games and scheming between Banks and Kai shows that she is the Horsemen’s match but seeing her need to be accepted and loved leading to an unconditional loyalty towards some people might annoy you a little bit until you get to the real reasons behind it.
Switching between past and present shows how Kai and Banks’s relationship started and how she turned him down every time because of her loyalty and love to Damon. It was great because you get so many information regarding who really Kai and Banks is and some shocking information about Damon that will change the way you see him. When Damon came back at the end, after everything I learned about him through the book and what he did at the end, OMG! I couldn’t hate the guy as much as I did before.
‘Hideaway’ is dark, sexy, intense and suspenseful, and also emotional. Some parts of the book, I was reading it with a lump in my throat, it was heartbreaking. You will definitely have a love and hate relationship with all the characters throughout the book. Also, thank you Penelope for making this long wait worth it and I am so not thanking her for the little intro of ‘Kill Switch’ she gave at the end of the book because she just started another waiting period LOL! Damon’s story ‘Kill Switch’ will be released in 2018. Cannot wait to get my hands on it
Would I recommend this book: Yes.
Would I re-read this book: Yes.
Would I read future books by this author: Yes.
After reading Corrupt, I instantly dived into the second book in the Devil’s Night series. And OMG, what a story. I liked Kai’s character in the first book, but reading his POV and his interactions with Banks made me fall in love with him. Banks is a true survivor and getting to know her, what she went through, and her conflict between choosing family or love was heartbreaking on so many levels. Penelope Douglas did once again a phenomenal job with this book.
“You don’t know what I had to become to survive three years in prison for a crime I would gladly commit again.”
The following ratings are out of 5:
Audio/Narration:
Romance:
Heat/Steam:
Story/Plot:
World building:
Character development:
The Setting: Meridian City & Thunder Bay Ontario.
The Hero: Kai Mori – went to prison for nearly three years for beating up a cop. The cop had been abusing his younger sister. Kai’s friend William was in love with the cop’s sister so they beat him to get him to stop. Kai has secrets.
The heroine: Nik Banks – wears men’s clothes. She lived in the Torrence home and disguised herself as a boy when she was in her teens. She was a Damon’s secret and he wanted to keep her to himself.
The Love Story: Kai met Banks in a confessional the year before he graduated high school. He was confessing his sins while she was sitting on the priests side. Though she dressed like a homeless tomboy he was interested right away. Years later they meet again when he was looking for Damon.
The Four Horsemen consist of Michael Crist, Kai Mori, Damon Torrence and Will Grayson. Damon was sent to prison for 33 months, while Kai and William were sentenced to 28 months each. Michael wasn’t arrested but felt guilt the entire time his friends were away, thinking it was his fault. In Corrupt, the guys had recently gotten out of prison and were doing their best to get revenge. Only things went bad and Damon tried to kill them along with Michael’s brother Trevor.
Damon ran away and the last word they guy’s had was that he was in Russia, though Kai figured out that Damon was much closer to home. He figured out that Damon was in an abandoned hotel owned by his father, across the street from Kai’s dojo. There is a rumor that the hotel has a hidden twelfth floor that the elevator doesn’t stop at.
I know the next book is about Damon and I don’t know how he will be able to be reformed. Though he was one of the four horsemen, Damon was evil in the second half of Corrupt and in this entire book. Not only was he threatening Kai, his whole relationship with Banks is crazy.
He wants Banks to only love him. Supposedly Banks lived with him from the time she was twelve and he lives like any son of a rich man, but she has never tasted steak and she wears his hand-me-downs? I just don’t get it. Even if Banks’ father wouldn’t pay for her clothes and things, why wouldn’t Damon buy her stuff and didn’t she eat whatever everyone in the mansion ate? It is obvious that Damon loved her but some things just didn’t make sense. Despite that, the book is a good one. I liked the story, the characters and the suspense. The romance between Kai and Banks is a bit of a slow burn but it is steamy. I can’t wait to see what happens next in the series.
As for the Audio, the same narrators were used for this one as for Corrupt. I don’t know if I just got used to them more or what, but I liked the narration better in this one. My one negative in the last book was that the male narrator didn’t have a deep enough voice, he sounded too gentle to be such a bad boy as Michael Crist. However, I think he used a deeper inflection as Kai, so I liked him better in this book.
Loved !!
Penelope tricked me in the first chapter. Thought this story would be about Erika.
But I’m so happy it was about the two it was about.
I love you Banks. But idk If I just missed it or not but why did she keep dressing up in boy clothes. Why did she hide?
I still remember how addicted I was to this series and the second chapter of the Horsemen story didn’t disappoint.
Hideaway was another rollercoaster in this amazing series and once again, Pen did an amazing job with the development of the story and characters.
Kai and Banks were always perfect for each other and I simple loved them individually and as a couple.
“There are just some things that are more exciting when they’re a secret.”
KAI KAI KAI What did you do to me?
I’m still speechless .
There’s something about him that attracted me since the first book. His heritage , his past and his tendencies to be attracted to the dark .
But most of all his way of isolating himself , like he needed to feel lonely .
He was attracted to everything that was dark , mysterious and dangerous .
“We’re only ever good, because there are consequences,” I told her. “Take those away, and everyone shows their true self. Kind of like taking off a mask.” “Or putting one on,” she replied. “After all, there’s freedom in hiding, isn’t there?”
And Banks was all that and so much more . A woman with a mysterious past , and with a power-full position in the present . Confident , strong and beautiful in her own way she was a magnet for Kai since they met .
Between them it was like fireworks since they first saw each other .
This story was filled with suspense and dark scenes .
It bring us back to that famous Devil’s Night , there’s so much more we don’t know about that night .
“It could be so strange how things happen. How the people you never suspect become you’re only lifeline, and you hold onto them as hard as you can, because you have no choice. There was nothing else to keep you from falling. Falling into loneliness or despair or fear. He reached for me, and I reached back.”
This story revolve around finding where Damon is hiding and getting crazy trying to understand Banks’ past .
But it’s also filled with so much sexual tension angst and a fog of mysteries and plot twists .
This book was a real page-turner kind of book . I absolutely loved it.
Banks was such an inspiration . She become a tough woman , who doesn’t knee , a real boss-woman who’s ready to run the show . And kai surely didn’t see that coming .
They were so much alike , both needing to be in control , not ready to backdown but surely attracted like never before to each other . They crave each other like air , they were soulmates , and there was no coming back now . It was only a matter of time.
“You make me feel driven. You make me hungry and on fire and wanting to slow down time instead of wanting to rush through it. It’s you I look for when I walk in the doors in the morning. Not her. You.”
I gave it 5 stars
I hope you’ll enjoy it like I did!
ENJOY!
This is my favourite book ever. I really enjoyed it.
I read the first book to Penelope Douglas Devil’s Night in 2019 for the Romanceopoly Challenge. I’ve wanted to read the second book to the series for a while now. I’m making time to read them because otherwise, I will never have time. I was excited to dive into Kai’s book because he intrigued me in the last book. He’s one that comes off as reserved but is scary at the same time. (if that makes sense)
Female Protagonist: Banks is one female character that is quiet and reserved when you first meet her, but she’s not those qualities. She’s loyal to the ones she works for and lives with, but she’s also broken/damaged. She works for the worst kind of person, but she has learned how to handle herself. She doesn’t wear fancy girl clothes, and she is told to stay away from all males. Readers will find out why when they read this book. I liked Banks but didn’t love her character.
Male Protagonist: Kai Mori is one of the four horsemen. He’s an ex-convict, millionaire/billionaire with his real estate properties, and a martial arts instructor. He comes off as an alpha-male because he goes after what he wants, and he’s very commanding. I liked his character in the first book because he came off as mysterious. In this book, he was the same, but he also became darker. Kai is one character that is not as scary as Damon, but he has his moments.
Storyline/My Thoughts: First, let me say that this is not my favorite book, but I still gave it 4-stars. I looked forward to Kai’s book, especially after being introduced to him in the previous book. I wanted to know who would win over Kai’s heart and didn’t expect it to be Banks. If you read the first book, you would determine why Kai Mori went to jail and why he feels lost in this book. This book mainly focuses on Kai trying to find Damon for his reasons. The other horsemen want to find him too, especially after what Damon did to them. Kai goes to Damon’s father for help and ends up doing something out of character that even his friends can’t believe he agreed to do. Although, Kai does end up finding the one girl that got away 6-7 years ago. The one girl that he fell for hard, even though he didn’t know her. (One reason why I only gave this book 4-stars because I have an issue with instant attraction in books.) He never expected to see her working for Damon’s father. There will be many twists and turns in this book because Banks is full of secrets.
I didn’t give this book 5-stars due to certain scenes in this book that drove me crazy. One, in particular, was how Michael treated Banks. There was also the scene between Michael and Banks, and then Kai and Rika ended up in the scene.
It took me a little longer to finish this book because I didn’t have the same love for the characters as I did in the first book. I did like getting to know Kai more in this book, and I also liked getting to know Banks, but these two will not be my favorite in the series
I did like the suspense in this book. Damon is one character that is down-right scary. I’m kind of worried to read his book after finding out more about what happened to him. He has every reason to be the way he is because of what happened to him. He needs a HEA like Michael and Kai.
Steaminess: Steamy.
Trope: Enemies to Lovers
Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you are a fan of Romantic Suspense/Dark Romance, then you’ll enjoy this book/series. You’ll need to read the first book in the series because you will miss out on certain things mentioned in this book.
Trigger Warnings: Violence, Animal Cruelty, almost rape scene, pedophilia and incest that is mentioned in the book.
Omg I never realized I forgot to review this lovely book! I love Kai. This book was heartbreaking in alot of ways. So much was put into this book and it was beautifully written for Kai and this amazing family that go through so much together and when they’re in their minds alone. Kai is such a sweet person but so strong. Amazing willpower. Banks is wow smoking hot awesome!!!! Fire on fire. The chemistry is out of this world. This book was 10/10. This entire series is perfect!!!! I love every part of in every characters journey. Read this series!!!! Just do it!

I’m so glad I decided to read this series. The author is fast becoming a favorite! Corrupt immediately grabbed my attention from the beginning and kept it throughout. Hideaway was no different. My love for these characters grew even more including the ones I loved to hate.
This is the second book in The Devil’s Night series and focuses on four high school friends nicknamed “The Horsemen”. At the core of the first two books, we are taken to the past on different events that happened on Devil’s Night which is the night before Halloween. They are rich and untouchable or so they thought.
This book focuses on Kai and Banks. Kai is the quiet, reserved yet still intense member of this group. His father is Asian and Kai incorporates many things related to their heritage especially honor and how important it was. After the mistakes he’s made, regaining his honor is always on his mind.
The journey takes us from the present to six years ago. The transition between past and present was smooth and flawless. Kai first meets Banks six years ago on Devil’s Night. This author weaves an intense romantic suspense story. As Banks and Kai come face to face in the present, they begin a battle filled with deception and maybe a little hope for more.
I absolutely loved Kai. Michael had been my favorite but he has been quickly replaced. I loved the dark intensity he possessed yet his heart is pure gold. I’ll be honest, I just do not like Banks. I thought as the story went on that I would learn to love her but my opinion stayed the same up to the last page. Was she strong and badass? Yes but she had such a stubborn and almost arrogant way about her that irritated me. I wanted to strangle her a few times. The end also left me feeling a little lost. The angst in this book steadily built, leading to what I hoped would be an explosion of an end. I never felt that sensation of my heart racing, full of excitement because characters would get what they deserved bad or good and answers would be revealed. I needed just a little more to be completely satisfied with the end.
Never the less, I love this series, loved this book and have completely fallen for Michael, Kai, Damon and Will. I am so excited to read Kill Switch which is Damon’s story. I can’t wait to see how the author will weave his story to bring about his redemption.
