You have good reason to be afraid. . . . It was a case that haunts Bobby Dodge to this day—the case that nearly killed him and changed his life forever. Now, in an underground chamber on the grounds of an abandoned Massachusetts mental hospital, the gruesome discovery of six mummified corpses resurrects his worst nightmare: the return of a killer he thought dead and buried. There’s no place to … place to run. . . . Bobby’s only lead is wrapped around a dead woman’s neck. Annabelle Granger has been in hiding for as long as she can remember. Her childhood was a blur of new cities and assumed identities. But what—or who—her family was running from, she never knew. Now a body is unearthed from a grave, wearing a necklace bearing Annabelle’s name, and the danger is too close to escape. This time, she’s not going to run. You know he will find you. . . .
The new threat could be the dead psychopath’s copycat, his protégé—or something far more terrifying. Dodge knows the only way to find him is to solve the mystery of Annabelle Granger, and to do that he must team up with his former lover, partner, and friend D. D. Warren from the Boston P.D. But the trail leads back to a woman from Bobby’s past who may be every bit as dangerous as the new killer—a beautiful survivor-turned-avenger with an eerie link to Annabelle. From its tense opening pages to its shocking climax, Hide is a thriller that delves into our deepest, darkest fears. Where there is no one to trust. Where there is no place left to hide.
BONUS: This edition includes a new afterword: Lights, Camera, Hide the movie!

So I was asked to recommend a book that kept me up all night reading. The first book I thought of was Hide by Lisa Gardner. While Hide is now listed as a D.D. Warren novel, Bobby Dodge (from Gardner’s Alone) is one of the main characters. The novel centers around a shocking find on the grounds of a closed mental hospital- the mummified remains of 6 girls found in an underground cavern. The case bears some striking similarities to the Catherine Gagnon case (again see Gardner’s Alone) so D.D. pulls Bobby into the case. One mummy wears a necklace with the name Annabelle on it, which prompts a mysterious woman named Tanya to come forward. As a child, her name was Annabelle Granger and that was her necklace. Since childhood, Tanya/Annabelle’s life has been a series of upheavals as her father moved her and her mother around the country- always assuming new identities. She knew they were running from something- she just didn’t know what. With the discovery of her necklace on a dead girl, Tanya/Annabelle believes she may now know what her father was running from.
I almost always figure out the twists in suspense novels, but this novel had me guessing until the very end. I couldn’t put it down. It remains one of my favorite books in this genre.
So well written! I’m listening to this on audio. The narrator does a terrific job with this terrific story. I’m now a Lisa Gardner fan.
Recommend this whole series
Minus one star for violence against animals.
This is the second of a series. The first one, “Alone”, really should be read first, events and characters in that story are in this one too.
This is a twisty thriller where you never know who the “bad guy” is until the very end. It’s who you’d least suspect. Pretty much non-stop action. I always wonder about story lines where the authorities allow private citizens to be involved in the actual sleuthing/detective work beyond interviews.
This was an amazing book. I loved it from the beginning. The shocker at the end, the killer, or 2 killers totally took me by surprise! I couldn’t believe that the UPS man was Annibelle’s killer psychotic uncle. Plus the minister was another crazy serial killer picking off prostitutes. This book was beautifully written, and the characters had such depth. I loved it from beginning to end.
This was an enjoyable read with some plot twists and turns. It does switch between first and third person which I normally do not like, but Gardner’s style made it seamless.
A good read
Really, truly love Lisa Gardner books. I remember her books and characters long after I have finished the books!
There’s no a Lisa Gardner book that I haven’t read. Love each and everyone of them.
