A shifter, three sexy mages, and an Elemental with magic thought to be extinct… what could possibly go wrong?I was born the day my parents died—talk about luck. I grew up bouncing around the foster system, never knowing when the rug would be pulled out from under me. Now, I’m twenty-two and while I’m free of the dangers of my childhood, life still isn’t easy. When a strange couple appears chanting … easy.
When a strange couple appears chanting in some weird language, I try to walk away, but the guy whips out a freaking fire lasso and starts making like he’s going to hogtie me right there on the street. That’s when all kinds of crazy breaks loose. Next thing I know, I’m strapped to a bed in what looks like a hospital, I can’t speak, and some woman is telling me I’m a Vox Elemental, which leaves me a choice between getting shipped off to a magic school to train my voice or be silenced forever.
Of course I choose the school; who wouldn’t? Turns out my new home is a highly competitive, cut-throat academy where one wrong step could cost me everything. I promise myself that I’ll work hard and get free, which all goes out the window when I meet not one, not two, but four of the hottest guys I have ever seen, and they are definitely not part of the curriculum. As if juggling new relationships, a new school, and some rather testy mean girls weren’t enough, there’s also someone or something making a meal out of the student body—literally. Add that to the things I have to manage. Assuming I survive…
Some luck, huh?

Hidden Power (Academy of Elemental Magic #1) by Fiona Starr is a wonderful story that I have loved reading. This is book number one in this wonderful start to a brand new series writen by a brand new author for me to read and I can not wait to read book number two in this series. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about magic and paranormal romances in their storieas as much as I do.

I liked Ava – she is strong and resilient. She has had a lot of crap in her life, but when she suddenly finds out she is magical, everything is turned upside down. The romance is fast paced and fast burn. I do wish there was some conversation between the guys and her about their feelings of being in an RH, the guys aren’t really friends, and there isn’t any talk that an RH relationship is the norm or acceptable in this world, so that piece felt a little awkward. There is some OW drama, that mostly is handled off screen so that felt like it was just thrown in. However, I did have fun reading it and am intrigued by the world and Ava so I will be checking out book 2.
We meet Ava under interesting circumstances and we know she’s got some magic. Vox Elemental who can conjure all the elements instead of 1-2. She’s more or less forced to attend this school to learn control or lose her voice forever without ever getting it back. Her kind is extremely rare and she’s the only one we know of. Most of the magical community is okay with her kind but there is some that are not. There are some sexy guys who she is drawn to. That’s the gist of the book. Here is what I think and I’m being 100% honest…there’s no other way for me.
This book reads super fast. You blink and its over. If I didnt know better I’d think this was a YA because it reads like one. They are in their early 20s but act like 17 year olds. To be honest it feels like there wasn’t a lot of effort put into this book. Dont get me wrong authors work hard on books but there’s a lot that bothers me in this one. There is definitely a plot but not much to it. She didnt develop it very far and same with the characters she created. We need more building of the story and characters for sure. She gave us a skimming of information if I were to describe it. Ava’s character bothered me quite a bit. When she first arrives she’s pretty ticked off but she does a complete 180 pretty fast and gets all excited about stuff. She makes friends instantly which okay but its like they moved into bffs in 2 seconds. Not really believable to me. Then she starts meeting some hotties. Sasha, Rafferty, and Jamey. She turns into a horndog with Rafferty knows nothing about the guy only that he’s a ladies man. The love scenes were okay but not spectacular. There’s no emotional connection between her and the guys. What she has with Jamey is more real than what she has with the other 2. I like him best. Not that the other 2 arent important the author just didnt do enough for them. Then…we meet a 4th guy Whitt. We know nothing about him. Ava doesnt even talk to him besides “nice to meet you” and shook his hand. Then its like he didnt exist in the book or to Ava. I’m like what happened??? I think as little as he was in the book it would have been more prudent to introduce him at the very very end of this book or in book 2 where we get to know him. Then again we dont know much about the other guys either. This definitely doesnt read like other Academy books. Ava fights nothing. She’s like okay with EVERYTHING! There is sinister stuff happening but it doesnt even really happen til 70-80% in. Its very rushed. I liked the blurb but man we just didnt get that. I feel let down. On a positive note…I liked the story and I like it enough to continue. To me I think why it went wrong was that there is a lot of information the author wanted to put out there and tell us but didnt want to make the book long for whatever reason? So, she cut some things short and tried to jam it into a novella length book. I mean most of it went to that 70-80% mark. Just a guess though. Hopefully 2nd book is more put together.
Our heroine never knew her parents as they died the day she was born. So they never go the chance to tell her about magic…
This is the start of a reverse harem romance story set at a magical academy. I thought I was getting rather jaded to these stories, but then this one came along and really surprised me. We still get a lot of the usual academy stuff, but I really like the setting and the way magic works. The characters are none too shabby either, particularly our heroine who has had a rough time, but has not given up. There are some steamy scenes as well, so based on your preferences that could be a plus or a minus. For me, I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next book.
Highly recommended.

Really, really good book. Loved the characters so much and the storyline in general. I was hooked from page one and could not put down at all. Absolutely need more and can’t wait for the next book.
I loved the world building in this story. It definitely has me excited to read more about these characters and this academy. This was a fun read that had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen next. This is a new to me author, but I will definitely be looking to read more from them.
This is the first book in a new series and it is mostly different from the usual paranormal stories. Avaline has rare magic and isn’t aware of it until someone tries to harm her. Now that she is “out” she must choose the school where she can learn how to use her magic or return home where she will never be able to speak again. Of course, she chooses school and meets three extremely attractive young men who kick her libido into overdrive. I can’t say I could relate much to her, but it is still an interesting story. The ending is a sort of cliff hanger and leaves the story unfinished but does have a resolution to the first set of challenges.
The writing keeps the story going without getting bogged down. A nice but short read.

Wow, we start off with action, suspense and more. Ava has been bounced from foster care to foster care until she is left with Marin. She is everything to her. Then when I’m off to work some weird people show up and omg they are trying to kill me. Then I wake up at a Academy and have to make a choice. My voice or stay at the Academy. What should I do? What are with these men here? Why is my libido is on a crash course with these guys? Who is trying to kill me? Why are the hurting others on campus?

I read the blurb about this story and said that sounds interesting. Started reading and I was hooked. It is action packed from the very beginning. It has beautifully developed characters with amazing support characters that add so much to the story. It is beautifully written with only a couple of editing errors. The errors do not distract from the amazing story. I loved Ava and her band of merry men. They have fantastic chemistry that is extremely strong. The characters personalities are felt throughout the story. It is most definitely worth reading and doesn’t disappoint.
What a way to find out you are a Vox Elemental attacked, held captive and bound to a hospital bed. Ava’s life changes forever the day she decides to go to the Academy. She goes through quite a bit in book one of the Academy of Elemental Magic series and after that cliffhanger I look forward to reading book two.
Avaline or Ava Sable bounced around allot after her parents died what she doesn’t know is the truth about her and her parents and then a nice lady takes her in and raises her. And at the age of 22 she’s in college has a job and everything seems okay until to crazy people with magic attack her she’s given a choice learn to Barnes her power of forever be silenced she takes option one. Her new school is full of plenty not mates and one sweet wolf. Sasha a mage with secrets Rafferty the player and Jamey the shifter still waters run deep. Jamey and Ava have something special then there’s the wild card Whittney don’t know much about him but Ava she’s dreamed about him. The thing about Ava she shouldn’t exist she’s a Vox she can wield all the elements which has put a pretty big target on her back mean girls hate her and a secret sect wants to make sure she doesn’t exist anymore. There closer then anyone knows two students have been hurt and the evil is after Ava next who can she really trust. There’s intrigue a steamy romance or three developing and a magical power to be learned Ava has her hands full at the Academy of Elementals.

I don’t often read academy books because I like the cast to be older than high school age, but when I saw the age of the main character, Ava (22), I thought I would give it a whirl. And boy, am I glad I did. Great characters, a Vox elemental (you need to read this to learn what that is because I’m not giving spoilers away here!) which is something you don’t see often, a host of new book boyfriends, and steamy sex scenes.
I’ll be getting the next book in this series, that’s for sure!
Really enjoyed Ava’s spunkiness and seeing her make a life for herself and her men. Quick read and fast paced. Recommend!
Love Fiona’s dive into the paranormal and reverse harem. I hadn’t read any other books from her like this so it was a nice step away from the regular. Ava finds out she can do magic and boy, does that bring a whole other plethora of struggles. Of course, she also finds that she’s attracted to four hot, sexy men in the new school she gets sent to. Boy, was this sexy, fun, and filled with some twists and turns, that I was on the edge the whole time.

As Ava is walking, two strange people begin chanting and she is attacked. She also finds out that magic is real and that she has it! She is injured in the attack and, as she recovers, she finds out her parents were murdered and that she herself is a rare Vox Elemental. But she needs to be able to control this power she had not been aware of, so she is sent to the Academy.
At school, Ava will begin to meet the people who will shape her future. She meets up with the typical school bullies. She is attracted to certain guys who will be very important to her and she receives their protection. When the students are in danger, they discover dark magic is being used. What is behind the attacks on the students? Are they after Ava?
This is a fast-paced book with lots going on. The characters are intriguing and the story line pulls the reader in from start to finish. Grab your copy and enjoy the start of a new series!
This is a magical start to a series and I have found a new author to follow.
Ava and her men have worked their way through a lot and I cannot wait for this series to continue.
A definite must read.

Page turning story you can read in one sitting. Ava and her men are great characters. Each brings their own chemistry to the relationship. The magic setup is consistent and believable. I can’t wait until the next book comes out. This book does end in sorta of a cliffhanger but you don’t have to wait six months to get the next book.
