Oh the feels I got from this book, you can’t help but love the very broken and on the wrong side of the line Ace. I loved his banter with Shu. I loved his tender moments with Bast. And that restaurant scene at the end – yeah, I may have shed a tear or two. I’m off to read Witches’ Bane….
First Reading Review
Wow, this is so much darker than The Veil series and Girl From Above, however it is just as good. For some reason it took me a little while to get into the book, it might just have been my state of mind because when I picked it up for the second time I was soon into the story and didn’t put it back down until I had finished it.
The book is entirely from one point of view, the male main character called Ace Dante – well that’s what he’s called in New York, elsewhere he goes by The Nameless One or Soul Eater. There are so many mysteries about Ace to learn and I am sure Ms DaCosta will slowly reveal the answers as the series continues. I liked Ace, he has a darkness to him but you can sense that he does have some goodness hidden inside him somewhere. He reminded my a little of Akil, The Prince of Greed from the Veil series, at times. I did struggle a little with the references to all the Egyptian gods – perhaps a little personal research would have made things clearer.
The story jumps right in from the off, with the action and pace continuing non-stop until the end. You can tell that there are a multitude of schemes being plotted by the various gods, one or two are revealed in this part of the story, but I sense that there is something SO MUCH BIGGER lurking in the background. This book focuses on Ace’s connection with Bastet, the goddess of cat’s and pregnant women, and why her ‘followers’ are being murdered. There are lots of other sub-plots too, some of which are not resolved in this book. That being said this could be read as a stand-alone, rather like you can watch the first Star Wars film or the first Hunger Games film and not need to watch the rest. However you just know you are missing out on more wonderfulness, as well as seeing the bad guys get their comeuppance and the hero get resolution.
I really like Pippa DaCosta’s writing style, it has such depth and complexity and it is so very difficult to guess what will happen next. I can’t wait to read the next book.
I meant to review this one ages ago – I really enjoyed the first book in this series, and loved the main character! I’m always on the lookout for good male UF series, since I really love reading from that POV. This one is great, and definitely worth a read if you like that kind of thing, with a really fascinating world and a tough-guy main character who’s got an interesting backstory so far. Definitely reading more of these books now that I have more time carved out for reading just for fun! It’s one of those I keep wanting to return to, but I got distracted by other things (one of the perils of being a writer, you end up reading a lot of books for other reasons, lol). I just picked up book #2 though, and looking forward to diving back in!
I really enjoyed the book. I enjoyed stories of myths and gods in today’s world. Egyptian gods have always had great stories and this one is no exception. A good antihero and the author does a good job setting the stage for developing the character. By the end of the story you feel his conflict. I like seeing how characters fight the good fight even as everything falls apart. It seems like it would be really easy to just be the biggest bad guy and win. But where’s the story in that?
One of my new favorite authors, Pippa DaCosta can do no wrong in any of her series!
Just a good , fast action read
Book 1 of the engaging Soul Eater series
Hidden Blade
(Soul Eater #1)
by Pippa DaCosta
Terrific and terrifying gods that haven’t the slightest morals or empathy for life. Ace finds out he has a daughter that is grown and in danger. He is trying to save her, save his ex-wives followers, keep from losing his mind from darkness, keep from getting himself killed by a sadistic god, and he is suppose to kill a god that he has no chance of killing. Plus, there is a demon on the loose! The book is never dull!
A tortured soul held captive by a capricious god who wields a soul-eating sword.
i know i started thid book. did i finish it? did i like it? i don’t know, it’s been too long ago. but i don’t remember it, so i won’t give it more than 3. but i remember the title, so it shou;d be not less than 3
A complete rip-off of the Harry Dresden Files. I would recommend reading those instead
Do not recommend Difficult read
A story of old gods living in both our world and theirs. Our author provides very different rules and codes of behavior for these characters. This is most definitely not a happily ever after. If the head god, osiris, continues his practices he will be like Stalin.
Interesting plot, with sex used as a tool and death of innocent players is something a gothic may enjoy.
I loved this whole series. Ace is a fantastic MC, the world building is phenomenal, and I only threw my Kindle across them room 5 times during the whole series. I binged all the books in one week, there may have been tears at the end. HIGHLY recommend!
The evil beings remained evil. They didn’t “Do A Disney” and have a change of heart at the finish. You know, kinda like real life. Kudos to the author for bringing it to a conclusion without elevating the hero to sainthood.
For “grown-ups”….
This is a great book. Contains magic and mayhem, gods and demons. Can’t go wrong with this one.
This book is unfortunately very forgettable and uninteresting. Even a couple days after finishing it, I have trouble remembering or caring about it at all. I feel like the characters didn’t go anywhere by the end, with the plot literally undoing much of progress made by characters with no goal in sight.
The story itself wasn’t that amazing, and felt like it did way too much in a short period. Nothing every felt fully explained and just glossed over. I wish it was slowed down, with less packed in a single book.
Character wise they had something decent going. I could see myself caring about these characters and how they grow and change, but none of that matters by the end. All the interesting characters or development get destroyed by the end, and I have no interest in seeing what happens from here. If this is how the characters in the first book get treated, why should I ever get interested for any of the future characters.
Personally I would say avoid this book and series. It doesn’t do anything very good, and everything ends up being very forgettable.
This is an interesting take on the “supernatural detective” theme — he’s a minor god from ancient Egypt working in modern New York. Well-written and with cool and intriguing characters, the series looks great. The first one was compelling and enjoyable.
Different from your average story line, I found the book to be refreshing.
I liked the setting and how he started caring about his daughter and the interplay between his wife and him
