We have mystery, suspense, confusion and more. Alex is always getting into trouble, but one night she is running late for a test and goes thru the park. Something happens and she runs into Mason. She wont tell anyone what happened. Will Mason help her? Will her Uncle ever let her be and investigator? Who is killing and stealing the witches? Can she help or get in the way? Why can’t she control her magic? Why does she have problems with her magic?

I was almost immediately engaged in the story from the start by Alex’s character. She has everything a female protagonist needs; she’s full of fire, witty, and smart. The story follows a general mystery of who’s kidnapping witches from the university the main female character goes to. All Alex wants is to prove herself to her experienced P.I. uncle, and maybe get a handle on her uncontrollable magic, and jumps head first into the case which has consequences. Along the way she mets a guy and has an instant connection. There’s some relationship building, but it moves quickly into something more. I would’ve liked some more scenes building the connection between Alex and Mason as well as see more of the dynamic between Alex and her uncle. It did lose my attention here and there, but over all it was a solid book. It was much better than some of the other novella turned books I’ve read.

Alex is an elemental witch, with limited control of her fire element. Running late to an exam, she faces some intense and unexpected challenges.
Mason is an Alpha werewolf. He expects his new gig with his old mentor Drake to have some built in challenges- they turn out to be not quite what he expects.
Alex and Mason must take some risks and leaps of faith in order to meet a foe who has really gone out of bounds.
Faiths, loyalties and betrayals abound.
Awesome action and romance read!

The characters are authentic and original with on point personalities that blend and flow. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions, creating a colorful backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Fantastic job Nola, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
Alex St. Claire moved quietly through the empty hallway of the Kochran College administration building, guessing she would have maybe 20 minutes before campus security locked the doors. She tried to pick the lock on Dean Brandt’s office, but it didn’t work. She would try again and have to resort to magic if it failed – although her magic wasn’t all that reliable either. Finally getting inside, she hacked the dean’s computer to access the coven’s database. Her Uncle, Drake St. Claire, had been hired by the Wicks Hollow coven to find three witches who’d disappeared from campus and Alex wanted to prove she had private investigator skills so he would accept her as more than just his admin for clerical work. She copied the data from the computer and joined her friend Paige outside. But she had lost track of time and she was going to miss taking the final test to get her investigator’s license if she didn’t get to class within 15 minutes – and the class was only offered every 6 months!
Unable to get there in time without cutting through a park that campus administration had asked everyone to avoid because of the missing girls. The lamppost lights started to flicker and she heard a loud hum. She sensed the dark magic immediately. The bulbs all exploded and the path went dark. Instead of running, Alex picked up samples of the glass to examine later. Something with red eyes, huge and fur-covered, snarled from the trees and there were at least two more of them out there. Hell hounds? She turned and ran frantically down the path.
Mason Connor is an ex-cop and shifter who just took a job at St. Claire Investigations at his friend, Drake’s, urging. He went to the campus to look around since he would be working on the case involving the disappearance of several local witches. All of a sudden he heard loud popping and a woman ran straight at him and collided! She spun away and threw a silver knife at him which did some odd movements and landed in the dirt! She ran but he caught her, talked a little, then walked her to her class – which was locked up. He went back to the woods and found odd claw marks on the trees with witch’s blood which he took a picture of and sent to Drake. He continued to follow footprints he found and discovered the bloody clawed body of Gwen Montgomery, the first witch to disappear. Mason pulled out his phone to ask Drake to send the team. Now that the victims are showing up dead, the pressure to find the killers is even more imperative!
This was a good, well-written story that kept the reader’s interest. The strange creatures Alex ran into in the woods keep the reader on edge with the red eyes and the fact Alex did not see them as shifters. Why are the witches being targeted? Is Alex in danger, especially after her strange conversation with Trevor? Grab your copy and follow the strange investigation to see where it leads!
This book started off a bit slow and then surprised me and became one that I could not put down. It moved along at a great pace, has characters that will grab you and you feel as though you have known them forever. The story , once it has you hooked, will not let you go until you are done the last page. This needs to be on your TBR list, no doubt about it. You will not be sorry that you did.
